Just by looking at the list, any decent player can tell that there is balance issues. With a ton of knights that can come out quickly, dragons only have cinder wall and torchrunners to chump block and 4 early burn spells. The knights have a ton of effects to fight back, with 3 removal spells, a good number of damage prevent and pump spells against early burn and a number of ways to block the 6 larger dragons. The way I see it, the dragons need to create a stalemate then build up for a 2-turn kill. But the knights are just going to be too fast...

The knights will consistently have a good number of creatures, the quality of which would also be as consistent (3 1-mana, 9 2-mana and 5 3-mana creatures). The dragons rely heavily on getting enough mana to even have a chance, draw one of the dragons and hope it sticks long enough to matter or not to be outclasses when you have it out then swing in with the dragon without opening yourself up for more damage than you can deal...

If only the designers weren't hellbent on going with the fire-breathing theme for the dragons, they could have picked 6-mana dragons or even cards like Lightning Dragon or Furnace Whelp so the dragons can keep up with the pace of the knights. Or even more spells to slow down the knights so you can get to seven mana without being within an inch of your life (more early burn comes to mind)...

Sure, dragons delivering fire from above has a lot of flavor, but they forgot the actual game and how knights would just charge in...

Just... wow... Nin is instant card draw each turn if you have anyone that can soak up that damage or just gives you insane ways to abuse that ability if you have the right cards (Niv-Mizzet fits the Nin's color identity for EDH). It also provides defense with a bit of drawback if needed...

Not really digging Knight of the Reliquary as the mythic... Sure it can potentially go toe-to-toe against the dragons, but there is the conception that the feature card of each deck is the central card of the deck, something that swings games or support the theme of the deck. Knight of the Reliquary is just a big knight at times with deck-thinning functionality.... I really hope the wilt-leaf knights are included because I don't want to see green limited to just pump cards... I also expect some sort of card like Glorious Anthem to pump the knights to match-up properly against the dragons' size... Unfortunately, I see the Morningtide card that gives double strike to be one of the rares...

As for the dragon side, I expect a lot of burn or even cheap sweepers such as Pyroclasm. The dragons would probably cost at least 5 mana and it would need to have acceleration or some sort of counter to the knights' speed...

Also kinda pissed about Distant Memories... Sure, it's a off-color Diabolic Tutor, but any time that you make your opponent decide what you get, that's when it gets ugly... So for blue to get Concentrate back, you basically have to lose a good card in your deck. Even if you consider that the card you are losing hasn't hit your hand so there should not be much impact, that card could have turned the tide or won you the game outright. Instead you have to push your luck, most likely one of those 3 you draw would be a land.

So this basically comes down to getting a subpar card or a good card that you probably don't need at the moment or even the card that you want but your opponent has an answer to it... or getting 3 cards for the price of a good card and hope you get lucky.

The upped rarity from two uncommons being combined is just an insult...

A lot of limited fillers, with some looking good like Necrogen Scudder and some that are just meh (Flight Spellbomb).

For the featured cards, Genesis Wave looks very good mana-heavy decks like ramp. Molten Psyche is a little boring for me. Trigon of Rage is quite handy in limited as it is potentially a source for 9 damage.

    Liquimetal Coating
    2 (U)
    Artifact
T: Target permanent becomes an artifact in addition to its other types until end of turn.

As for the card, it can be an early enabler for metalcraft and makes any "destroy target artifact" effects to "destroy target permanent". I think this would have a place in limited decks if you get the right cards. But is it worth playing in constructed? I think it might as it turns any deck similar to mirrordin hate decks playable against any other deck instead of auto-loss.

I guess the enchantment is okay. It's just one of those cards that don't affect the board immediately or on its own. If you can have a constant supply of spells or to somehow recycle them, you can abuse this.

A little bit too slow for me, although it is properly costed and right size for its ability. I guess you can pack 1-2 as a late game card, but the fact that this needs to tap makes it look so much slower. I guess you'd see this card more in combos trying to abuse the ability rather than in straightforward aggro...

This has some mainboard potential in limited if you go artifact-heavy (and artifacts from your opponent is a bonus then you can just swap it out game 2 if your opponent is light on artifacts). I guess if ever artifacts become successful, you'd expect this to appear in a few sideboards for constructed play. I do like that this is a nod to the Angel's Feather cycle

I guess this has some potential. While 6 mana for a 4/4 flyer is not good, once you activate it once, it becomes okay. I think he would be better used on 7 mana where you get to activate it immediately unless you can clear the board before this hits play.

  • posted a message on [SOM] 9/17-Hand of the Praetors, DUAL LANDS!, Venser's Journal, Tunnel Ignus
The ignus is pretty powerful as it punishes fetchlands and any form of ramp. Although, I do find it quite boring... I mean, did they really need to do Tunnel Ignus? (I'd say yes if we are referring to... you know... that...)

The new duals are better for faster decks as it fixes their mana on turns 1-3 without any drawbacks. It would be interesting if a 20/20/20 zoo-like deck be possible...

Venser's Journal is pretty cool. I like its flavor. As for its viability, for 5 mana, this is one of those cards that don't affect play immediately. It is a little bit expensive for decks that tend to keep cards in hand (aka control), but if you can somehow play it, lifegain each turn is a nice thing to have. But in the end, the cost puts me off...

An infect lord is interesting. We haven't really seen that many infect creatures to know if we can rely on infect and proliferate, but a lord for the theme does give us something to look forward to.

Pretty solid in limited if you can throw a good number of artifacts in your deck for it to be a consistent 4/4 at turn 4. A couple more artifacts and you're ready to ride...

A nice card to have in limited if you are going artifact-heavy. Could be used during stalemates, although if you throw non-tokens, you might be tipping the advantage to your opponent anyway.

  • posted a message on [SoM] Wednesday, 9/15 -- Myrsmith, Myr Reservoir
Myrsmith is pretty solid. While you're not really expected to generate tokens with this early in the game, this provides much needed numbers mid or late game where you can get 2 myr out from just 1 spell. More reason to go for a W/X myr or artifact deck.

Reservoir just proves the push for myr tribal or at least an attempt to. But I wish there would be another solid myr... While ichorclaw is solid early to start poison, galvanizer is nuts with mana myrs to cast high mana spells or just by beefing them up for an alpha strike, and the ball can flat out win games, it feels that a solid 4-5 drop myr is lacking. I guess this is where colored metalcraft comes in...

As much as anything that gives your opponent options on what to do is bad, this being an enchantment does give it some merit. It gives you a soft lock on the opponent by itself. Assuming you are control, most opponents will likely take 3 life-hits from this before starting to discard stuff (early drops from control don't really do damage most of the time), so you have to defend properly against those 3 cards, then watch him struggle from there. Maybe a sideboard against control matchups, especially if you can sneak this while having some sort of aggro in play.
