I actually just got back from THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations). It's the biggest in the world, and yeah, it's fun. The IMF's an ass though.

As I understand it, the death rates for abortion are lower than those for giving birth. Thus, whether or not what is inside the woman is alive, it can be argued that abortion saves mothers' lives in every case, and that the 'murder' is in self-defense.

hey, I wrote that on a whim and noticed it corresponded to the above post. cheers.

    I can't think of 10, settle for 5?

    Favorite:

    1. Little Miss Sunshine: fun-NAY. The dance at the end killed me, well written/ acted too.

    2. (Pseudo reserved for Letters from Iwo Jima) An Inconvenient Truth

    3. Borat

    4. Blood Diamond: the one movie by dicaprio I liked

    5. Casino Royale: new, good bond. a surprise in a good way

    Least favorite:

    1. The only "bad" movie per se on the list, Date Movie. what a piece of crap.

    2. MI: III. Just cuz i dont like tom cruise.

    3. The Good Shepherd: disappointing. I expected a lot from damon, de niro etc. and I didn't like what I got. It felt like it was made to make a good trailer.

    4. The departed. I never got the greatness that many saw in this movie, and was really disappointe din it when I saw it. It by no means "bad" in the sense that date movie is, but its just so disappointing (for me), I mean I wasn't expecting much from date movie but I had (had) high hopes for the departed.

    5. Snakes on a Plane: disappointing, last the last two.

It was good, sure. But as far as I'm concerned Craig is still a very distant second to Connery, who I feel is the greatest James Bond.

@ TylerDurden: Hydroplaning is basically when water gets between your tires and the road, so you're gliding on the water sort of. Thus your brakes don't work as well and you can't steer because you're not in contact with the road.

@ Jaelan: I'm sure that soon your car will be fixed and you can work plenty of overtime on dry days to cover your debt. Just try to remain confident driving in the rain. Make sure you know what to do if it happens again, and you'll be fine.

OOF. The tigers are killing themselves in this series. I'm watching game 5, and they just had another overthrow to third by their pitcher. It's rediculous. Personally, I think the tigers are showing their inexperience. The cardinals might not be better on paper (or in the regular season), but becuase they're older, they can handle the spotlight.

    Just thinkin'.

Here we have a shampoo comercial with the killer's Mr. Brightside.

I thought it was supposed to be good music..

Anyway, lots of commercials use music by the Who. They're not bad, per se, only relatively.

    1. A language.

    2. Things that have come before (history).

other than that, it's a matter of choice. If the person in question wants to be a writer, show them what other literature exists. If they want math, give thme math. etc.

  • posted a message on Discussion: The effect of power on conscience
I think there are two discussions going on.

The first one was about the play practice exercise. I think it was an entirely appropriate exercise because it wasn't meant to be a metaphor for the 1940s holocaust in any way; it was supposed to make the actors more able to play their parts by understanding emotions the people they're playing were having. At the same time, it's not a perfect metaphor for that because no one was taunting Anne Frank, per se. It would've been better to put one group in an unknown room, and then have the bigger group try to find them or something. I dunno, it's a hard situation to reproduce (as has been said).

The other discussion is about Hitler's intentions and motivations. In that discussion, I think it's important to note his fractured mental state and deteriorating health. Not that these in any way made him go on a mammoth killing spree, but that it was less and less his Germany; his cabinet (so to speak) had to take over. But this has little to do with the war's beginning.

At any rate, I tihnk it's a bad move to trust Mein Kampf as a gauge of Hitler's intentions simply becuase he was a lunatic.

Oscars? I don't think this movie deserves any (then again, it's hard to find movies today that do), but I would like to see Nicholson win (only becuase I like him,, not becuase of the movie's quality).

Holy Moly. Part of me wants me to rationalize this as the Tigers getting cold. Not that I'm for them, they're just obviously (to me, at least) the better team. But the cards stepped all over Verlander, and Reyes holds them to 2? No WAY. I think the cardinals want this, a lot. They have momentum, and they could use it to take the series (as heretical as that sounds). I don't even trust myself to think right now; I'm stunned.

Yes, but that has nothing to do with why it was said. If they'd said "Quit this department, you'll be lucky to get a job as a busboy", do you think it'd have been a reference to Boogie Nights or just the kind of thing someone might say in the context?

Yeah, I understand. The line is just something I was entertained by, and if you can't accept that, at least accept dicaprio's shakespeare line. I'm not saying it was intentionally left there to entertain me, I'm just saying that's what it did.

@ Jedit: In wahlberg's movie invincible, he plays a bartender (you may have been aware). I'm just saying I liked that line in particular.

@ Skinny dude: I'm not critical of babe ruth in terms of baseball, I'd just be entertained to see him try to swing his huge bat around his huge body at some of the more advanced breaking pitches. Haha, that does sound critical. Suffice to say he's still the greatest baseball player of all time, it'd just be nice to see him humbled is all.

As for the detour the topic has taken to its own validity, I do think that people are answering in terms of who they'd liek to have a beer with, i.e. theyre assuming the person would be approachable and, in the case of Nietzsche, non-crazy (i do speak german btw). Further, the idea that Einstein and others would be productive (or, in the case of jimi hendrix, that they wouldn't just kill themselves again) is equally farsical.
That said, it's only speculation, and thus doesn't deserve such overanalysis. I believe that the majority of posters didn't take huge amounts of time to contemplate thier answers, and it's understandable that they wouldn't "practically" work. But that's not the point of the thread. The point is to wonder: what if so-and-so hadn't died? What if they lived today and saved us from Fox and CNN? What if-? Becuase it's inherently hypothetial, you can't criticize it for not being practical or meaningful. It's only meant to be an entertaining discussion, and overanalysis takes away from the entertainment value.
