Hello everyone! I'm relatively new to playing control and decided to give Grixis a try after playing casual Izzet and Dimir. Here's my deck list and results from Friday, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Round 1 vs. Gruul Monsters
Game 1- Everything went according to plan, I stuck a turn 3 Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and killed or traded with everything he played until Keranos, God of Storms could finish him off.
Game 2- He's land flooded but I draw next to no removal, his 2 Mutavault finish me with ease.
Game 3- Similar to game 2 and I'm forced to race him using Prognostic Sphinx and Keranos, God of Storms but he bloodrushes for the win
0-1
Round 2 vs. Mono White Lifegain
Local 10 year old just learning to play, quick matches and give him some cards for his deck when we're done. Nice kid.
1-1
Round 4 vs. Jund Monsters
Game 1- Keranos plus Sphinx does it again after I counter Rakdos's Return with Izzet Charm and manage to take out Reaper of the Wilds with multiple kill spells
Games 2 and 3- Games go long but he manages to run me out of removal with creatures plus Thoughtseize before sticking Mistcutter Hydra
2-2
Overall I'm happy with my first attempt, even though went 2 and 2 my games were close. Ashiok continues to impress me against creature based and other control decks. Jace is fantastic card draw and after seeing him hold off 70 tokens by himself I'm thinking adding another is the right call. Mutavault is a problem, and I will be adding Pithing Needle to my sideboard. Far// away is lacking when a large part of the local meta is running Sylvan Caryatid and I will be swapping them for Hero's Downfall. Turn// Burn was lackluster with the amount of hydras and dragons running around and I think I will cut 1 for another Silence the Believers which I like more and more the more I play it, although I'm worried that losing the burn will hurt my already pour agro matchup.
Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated!
For mono black agro I'd definitely run four Master of the Feast and Herald of Torment. I'd also look into playsets Mogis's Maurauder, Gnarled Scarhide, Spiteful Returned, and Tormented Hero. Bestow has been working really well for me in this type of deck.
I wouldn't recommend running both Hammer and Aetherling. From my experience testing it in Grixis, the land destruction interferes with playing and protecting it. Have you tried simic charm anywhere in the 75?
This might have to do with me being a new user but I can't post in some of the threads that I want to. I don't have the option to post anything on any of the primer threads such as the grixis primer one for standard. Any help/ info would be appreciated.
