I've already ditched Emrakul in my 75, Ulamog can lock up a game pretty fast. The first one is breaking, the second one is 99% of the time GG. Yesterday I played against Mono U Tron and that was the only match I really missed Emrakul. I think we can run without him in the current meta and just ride the Newlamog wave, the exile 2 cast trigger is just so insane.
On the side note, I do see an increase of hate coming in vs Tron - it might be good to watch out for cards such as Fulminator, Crumble to Dust & Ghost Quarter. Out the top of my head we can run some things to possible interact with those cards:
Pithing Needle, this deck stops the following issues for Tron:
Excellent in the mirror, vs Hatebears (naming Ghost Quarter), Grisolshoal (naming Griselbrand or Borborygmos Enraged), Storm (naming Past in Flames), Ad Naseaum (naming Lighting Storm), Twin (naming Deceiver Exarch) Jund/Junk (naming Fulmi or Liliana) + ton's of other mu's I'm probably forgetting
Combo decks just hate playing vs Pithing Needle, you do need excellent knowledge of decks / card names. Yesterday the guy at SCG playing Abzan Company threw the game by naming Borborygmos instead of Borborygmos enraged, both legal in Modern... so he lost due to being careless.
Vs Crumble to Dust we are getting a goodie that can interact with it with the release of Oath: Warping Wail, this can counter a lot of relevant spells vs us such as Crumble to Dust (but also Living End, Maelstrom Pulse, Molten Rain), it can exile Dark Confidant, Pestermite, Deceiver Exarch, Grim Lavamancer, Swiftspear, Snapcaster Mage, Thalia, Noble Hierach, Glistener Elf, Blighted Agent, Blinkmoth etcc... hell it can even generate a chumper on instant speed + it's fetchable with Stirrings.
Surgical Extraction, this is a rough card to beat - if they go Ghost Quarter a tron piece + surgical it, 9 out of 10 times it's just game over, we can fight this with Relic of Progenitus but everybody is opting to remove those, I for one will never leave with less than 2 copies.
Other thing that I noticed is the uptick in Ghost Quarters, mainboard the solid 2 but in the sideboard an additional copy to either fight the mirror or fight hate cards such as Crumble to Dust.
What are your thoughts about fighting the hate we are getting due to tron rising in popularity?
I think the best way to deal with the land destruction(Fulminator Mage and Ghost Quarter) is Pithing Needle, and against Crumble to Dust, the best way is have and avaible GQ, don't think that Warping Wail is the best card to run in tron to deal with it, due to the limited space we have in the 75, for exemple if we drop Pyroclasm or Kozilek's Return seems an error, for that the creture MUs almost are a good ones, and the only place in the sideboard, I think is replacing Rending Volley, the uncounterable is a thing against Twin and Merfolks.
I'm testing now an split with 2 Pyroclasm, 1 Kozilek's Return and 1 Warping Wail, and a Firespout in the sideboard, another thing I don't like of Warping Wail is that our proactive deck change their rol to a reactive one and that's something that goes in contradiction with the deck itself.
I've added 1 Newlamog to the sideboard against the potential scapeshift/combo deck, maybe i could cut 1 karn in the Twin matchup and replace him with Newlamog?
There is something really appealing to me about having a 2nd Ulamog in the SB. Let's explore the concept a bit.
The first questions that come to mind are:
1) When would you bring it in?
2) is it better than a single copy of Crumble to Dust?
Obviously, Scapeshift is a huge target, which is where the Crumble to Dust thought comes from. A properly timed and targeted Crumble can remove 1 mountain (typically steam vents or stomping ground) from the board and 3 from the library, significantly reducing their ability to cast scapeshift for big damage.
Ulamog can of course remove 2 lands from play, and it brings the ability to target non-lands as well. Is 10 mana (typically turn 5 or later) too slow to be effective though?
Same deal with the Tron mirror. Crumble can completely remove one of the tron pieces from your opponent's deck where Ulamog can set them back 2 complete lands, which is utterly huge.
Crumble is too specific, i guess it could help in the Infect matches but it feels kinda slow, that's why i run 2 Ghost Quarters.
Oh yeah about the Newlamog part, most Scapeshift decks i've faced plays the full grip of Remand, if they remand my Newlamog i get to nuke 2 additional lands next turn!
Im not scared about the Tron mirror, we've barerly got any tron players so, but i do have to think about in which matchup newlamog gets to shine in, The ones im thinking of atm is Twin, Scapeshift (i've recently gotten out of bed) and some control matchups (even tho we have a somewhat strong game against them already).
Oh it doesen't hurt that i've managed to get a Japanese Newlamog, looks kinda sick
Just checking in, i haven't been able to play at all ofr the past couple of weeks and it kinda sucks.
Kinda felt a small need of posting my list and see what you guys think about it because maaaaybe this week im gonna be able to play some magic for once.
This is the list im rocking atm.
I've added 1 Newlamog to the sideboard against the potential scapeshift/combo deck, maybe i could cut 1 karn in the Twin matchup and replace him with Newlamog? Boil is thill there because it has won me ALOT of games.
But i dunno, it feels odd to go down to 2 Rending Volleys, maybe i should just cut 1 of my relics from the sideboard?
Been a while since i tinkered with the deck.
What do you guys think?
We're running the same main deck list As far as the sideboard, where you have one each of Boil, Crucible of Worlds, Feed the Clan, and Life from the Loam, I just pack pairs of Feed the Clan and Spellskite. Why?
Simply put, Feed the Clan is an out to Burn, and sometimes decks that go off to take out your life total (like Storm or Scapeshift). These can switch to Thragtusks in metas where Zoo and Merfolk are more common. Spellskite is just so good against so many decks that can take us out before we establish ourselves that I run the full grip. Every time I see a GR Tron player post a report about losing to Infect, for example, the first thing I do is inspect that list for the full sets of Skite and Pyroclasm.
Crucible and Loam are decent to have when we need to keep afloat against decks that attack our mana base. They are also solid against the mirror, Bloom, and anything with manlands (espcially Inkmoths). That said, I like the other tools we already have, and I don't see enough of the mirror here to warrant them.
If I were to cut anything for more copies of Rending Volley (I only play two because I run no fewer than three Skites in my 75), I'd cut single copies of Skite, Relic, or even Newlamog to fit them in; same goes for making room for Boil/Crucible/Loam. Some cut the O-Stone count down to three; since so many matches depend on cracking one to survive, I still prefer the full grip. This might be an area to experiment with, though.
I've also seen some lists swap the fourth Grove for a second Forest; since we have so many red sources (especially with Blood Moon brought in so often to slow us down), it's nice to have another basic to search for. I'm only running six red spells total in my 75, so I'm giving this some serious thought, and will probably test it soon.
"We're running the same main deck list As far as the sideboard, where you have one each of Boil, Crucible of Worlds, Feed the Clan, and Life from the Loam, I just pack pairs of Feed the Clan and Spellskite. Why?"
I think we've have the same 60 mainstock for a while now if my memory does not fail me. You agreeded with me about the 2 Pyros main and 2 in the Sideboard since they often turned into dead draws later on.
The reason my sideboard look the way it does its because i do not have access to all the cards i would like to. I would love to have an additional 2 Spellskites but then again, my meta has almost no infect players, there's like 1 or 2 (in 2 metas in total, so 1 for each).
The 1 off Boil is a card i do enjoy, it baits counters from twin or it can just devestate them if they fetch in the wrong order.
Here is where Newlamog would see play, against the twin deck + scapeshift or other somewhat permanentbased decks, maybe even storm if they can't set it up fast enough.
"Crucible and Loam are decent to have when we need to keep afloat against decks that attack our mana base. They are also solid against the mirror, Bloom, and anything with manlands (espcially Inkmoths). In the past i've just had to run these cards, there were so many Kolaghan's Command decks / Fulminator Mage users/abusers.
If i managed to find the Loam/Crucible they usually helped me out a fair bit, it made my opponents keep trying to loop/use up their Fulminators.
There's like only me that plays tron, but suddenly 1 dude in our meta has started to pick it up, he still lacks alot of the cards.
"If I were to cut anything for more copies of Rending Volley (I only play two because I run no fewer than three Skites in my 75), I'd cut single copies of Skite, Relic, or even Newlamog to fit them in; same goes for making room for Boil/Crucible/Loam. Are you talking about your own list? The reason i've put another Newlamog in my 75 its because i've wanted to see how it could perform in certain matchups. In the Twin mirror i would love to swap him out for a Karn or the like, if i can stall the game enough i could snag a few of his important sources. Focus on surviving skites and claims, your 2 Newlamogs + Emrakul will do the trick (atleas that's the plan!"
In my testing with Crucible I felt that it's too fragile, then I add the 3rd copy of Ghost Quarter in the SB, and it works better against Titan Bloom, in a little test, I won 4-3 with the Quarter(3 post board), furthermore GQ is more tutoreable: 4 Stirrings, 4 Maps, 4 Sylvan; unlike the Crucible only is tutoreable by Stirrings
Is Ulamog now a 3-off...? I suspect he is because he is THAT good.
Playing three Ulamog it's an overkill, Ulamog it's good against Control(an easy pairing most of the times), Midrange(another easy pairing) and Combo(Twin and Scape), I can undertand playing the second one in a heavy control-combo meta, but your deck becomes slower, and easier for aggro decks, in the GP the top four aggro decks were more or less the 20.00% of the metagame, for this reason I'll never drop Pyroclasm or Firespout, if you run 2 copies of Ulamgogs, 2 Ugins, and 4 Stones, our swepers come as late at T4, and Zoo, Aff, Burn and Infect can kill us before we can cast anything, if in the list of the GP I'll drop one Ugin and one Stone, It's seems that the guy who makes top16 didn't play against a lot of aggro decks.
I concur that more than 2 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is overkill. I also don't see the reason to put in 4 Grove of the Burnwillows for only 3 Pyroclasms and 2 Rending Volleys in the SB. Maybe it's just me, but a second Forest has never had me in such a pinch that I couldn't use red spells. Looking at the SB for this deck has me thinking it was thrown together for an unpredictable meta with the exception of Twin. This SB has 6 Twin-hate cards (that of course have other uses for other decks) as well as 2 MB Spellskites. I think that's a little excessive, no?
It's also saddening that G/R Tron didn't top 8. Anyone have any ideas as to why? Were we mostly beaten out on Day 1?
There isn't too much cards with my list when I side vs Twin I have at least 8 cards(depending of on the Twin version), but anyone It's for this specific MU, as you say. About the second forest I'm talking about it since the last page, and I'm so happy searching my second forest when someone destroys one tron land, there was a lot of Amulet Bloom and Infect, these are the reasons of not doing very well at GP
Is Ulamog now a 3-off...? I suspect he is because he is THAT good.

1st Round:
Affinity it's a rough MU, but we can win, unless it kills you with an Inkmouth Nexus in T3 in the first game, in the second game, I keep a hand with land, star and ancient, and no more lands, well and no see them until T4, and cast a poor pyroclasm, that no kills manlands and killing me in the nest attack.
0-2
2nd Round:
Losing the first round forces me to win the next 6 rounds, this match was vs WUR Control, an easy paring, a lot of cards are bad against they and side in Torpor Orb, and I was so surprised with how good it is removing the possibility that winning in burn mode.
2-0
3rd Round:
Merfolks, another favourable match, enchanting our lands give us a lot of time, no pressure on the table, the T5 Wurmcoil, T6 Karn, and T7 Wurmcoil, GG, the next game is summarized in Ugin in T4, a very unfair card against aggro decks.
2-0
4th Round:
WUR Twin, I love playing vs Twin, and vs a great player, a MU where you need in G1 play and Oblivion or Spellskite, in t3 play my Spellskite, playing and exarck taping my creature, the next turn I play my Oblivion, with mana to carck it, the next 6 or 7 turn was a game of draw and go, until I can cast my Emrakul, and GG, the second game Claim in my hand and green mana to play it, the t4 combo is out, he plays his creature, and tap one egg, he don't play the twin and attack me, next turn I play my spellskite, that gets bounced in eot, he attack me with the exarch, next turn play ulamog hitting his two red lands and gets remanded, my next turn play it again hitting other red source and Desolate Lighthouse, and countered my Ulamog with Cryptic, and next turn I go for the Emrakul, and GG.
2-0
5th Round:
Monoblack, another easy game.
2-0
6th Round:
WUR Control, same than above.
2-0
7th Round:
Grixis Twin, ID, I have to play agaisnt my friend, and we can pact and enter on the Top 8
1-1
5-1-1 and Top 8 giving me at least one fecth and 5 boster packs of BFZ, that was the Top8: 4 Abzan,1 Grxis Twins, 1 UR Twin, 1 Merfolks, and me with G/r Tron
The two twins are on the other part of the table
Quarters of final:
Abzan, the four Abzan are running the same list 2 GQ, and 11 Discard effects main, and on the SB 4 Fulinator, and 2 Stony Silence, the first game it's mine, Karn and Wurcoils, can't win, the second game he destroys me with two Tarmogoyfs 6/7, two fulminator, and my Ugin does nothing against the three damage to kill me of the Rinho , the third game he destroys two towers and one of each other tron lands, but I can play my threats due to I play 2 Forest and the ghost quarter doesn't stop me from playing my wurmcoil on turn 6, he kills it with Lili and play Tarmo, the next turn I go for the Eye,and kill Liliana, he kills my tokens on their turn and play Rhino leaving me at 4 lives, next turn play Ulammog exiling his creatures, and end my turn, in their turn play me Obzedat Ghost Council, and exiling it for the kill the next turn, but I have my Emrakul since my starting hand, and playing taking the turn, attack with Ulamog, an later with Ulamog and Emrakul. GG
2-1
There's a video of this game I'll post the link when It gets avaible
Semifinals:
Another Abzan, and against one of Top players of Spain, the first game was easy for me, only crack a GQ and doesn't do too much damage to me, play some creatures, but anyone bigger than wurmcoil and in the late, Ulamog, In the second game I keep a hand with Claim and grove, waiting for the Stony, and here was the Stony but he played the second, and that was out of my plans, hahahaha, the games continuos, and he proceeds palying his threaths, and winning the game, the third game was a game hard one, both goes to the top deck, but he have two little Tarmogoys, that can't do nothing against Thraghtusk, and two Relics, the games, topdecking a Sylvan gives me the Eye, and next turn Wurmcoil (Ulamog was discarted by Thoughtseize), and the next turn draw a land that a need to play Emrakul next turn, and he can't do nothing against him, GG
2-1
I'm on the final, and it's against my friend he won against UR Twin, and anoter Abzan, we split the prizes and we went home, it was already 9 PM.
Sorry for my expressions in English is not my native language, lol, greetings!
I play 2 Forest over the 4th Grove due to the low number of red spells, and for improve our deck against Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter
I'm doing pretty well with the deck, winning an Open of about 40 persons.
In the second and third games ours Colected Company are being diluited due to we introduce a lot of non creature spells, I think we have to make a SB with some hatebears.
What do you think about run only 3 Grove of the Burnwillows for playing the 2nd forest? I only run 6 red cards, and then we can deal better against Ghost Quarters and Path to Exiles. Not budget question.
Yeah now that i think about it i only run 2 redcards maindeck. COuld be a thing for sure.
I don't know why I said UB, I meant UG.
You could run more Cyclonic Rift and Oblivion Stone
What do you think about run only 3 Grove of the Burnwillows for playing the 2nd forest? I only run 6 red cards, and then we can deal better against Ghost Quarters and Path to Exiles. Not budget question.
For Burn and Zoo, Don't you preffer Claim's and Feed the clan? These are more versatile cards Goodyear against aggro, artifacts, Moon,Twin, and Feed the clan is good against an early Scapeshift too
Hi!I run a midrange list with Noble Hierrach. I need help with the construction of my SB, in my LGS there are always: 3 Burns, 3 Twins, 2 Grixis Decks, 2 Zoos, 2 Trons, 2 Junds, 1 Merfolks, 1 Bloom Titan, and another Tier decks, thanks!
Any suggestions? I want to strongly prepare for these matchups because they seem to be the most difficult. Pod is the best pairing of the three, but is usually a race where I tend to be slightly behind. But I'm tired to lose against Affinity and Twin. All the rest of the matchups, like Burn, Tokens, Jund, Junk, Goblins, Merfolk, they all feel winnable, so I don't really need that much against them. Thanks for suggestions!
All of this matchup go better if you add the White: Stony Silence, Kataki, Elesh, Path.
In your sb I think that it's all okey, you have a lot of hate for this matchups
I do not know the metagame that will be in the tournament. What would you put into the place that I have on the SB?
This is a really good example on the type of deck to bring to a relatively unknown meta. You have some "general answers" (Path to Exile, Beast Within) but still maintain the focus of the deck. In terms of the board, other good options include Creeping Corrosion (for Affinity) and Leyline of Sanctity (Burn, Mill, Discard/Rack decks, and many others). But you have a very deep board (which you can fortunately do with Chord of Calling) so you look to be in darn good shape. Neat list! I'll keep reading to see how it did!
You have my results and the final list I took to the tournament in the page 30
