So, a member of my group recently recreated his ug madness deck from when we first started playing. I used to have a Psychatog deck together and decided to revisit the olden days. My current list is the following:
Is this as good as it can be? I wish I knew all the best cards for this deck. I won't be buying Force of Will or other expensive cards. Maybe far//away? Please help as this is a bit of a surprise for our next get together. Thanks!
So, I have a gruul Warp World deck that is just no fun to play. What I really want, is a deck that is essentially a red devotion deck that has Warp World in it for some multiplayer fun. I will of course include cards like Bogardan Hellkite and Fanatic of Mogis in order to gain more from the Warp World than my opponent, but right now it's a combo deck. I run cantrips in green to find the Warp World and if it doesn't find it, I'm playing cantrips into Siege-Gang Commander on turn 4. Not too shabby, but it doesn't ramp very well when I'm casting cantrips too. Anyway, I'm also trying to drop some of my combo decks as I found the number I have is just getting too high. Combo isn't very fun in multiplayer, especially when it takes 5 minutes to win, and 4.5 minutes of that is shuffling, resolving triggers, counting, and recasting. Anyway, this is what I have left over from my former standard deck, along with a few cards I've picked up since rejoining magic 18 months ago.
As with most lists I post, this is really rough. I'm really open to suggestions on this one since it's super soft to board wipe. It also seems weird to run 24 lands in a red deck but considering how heavy each mana cost is, I don't want to be stuck without enough mountains. I also would like to keep it semi budget since I'm currently saving for several non magic things right now. Basically all I want is a deck that can handle itself without a Warp World but can do ignorant things with a one timer. I considered running token generators but they just don't do much outside boosting my count. Maybe this isn't viable, but I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks!
Can i respond to his draw card trigger with another damage? I currently have him in a deck that makes a lot of mana and one of my multiple use cards is [card]Corrupted Conscience [card/] and want to be sure if i get low on cards that he can still kill.
Isn't Reclamation Sage just better than Harmonic Sliver? She's much cheaper and fills the same role. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something as one says may and the other doesn't just in case someone has something I like in play I don't want to destroy. Is Angel of Serenity as good as Angel of Despair? It gets my stuff back I suppose, but it's removal isn't very permanent. What about using a Sylvan Primordial over the Avenger of Zendikar?
I love blink decks. I'm really on board with the Mother of Runes as well. She's a beast at protection and getting my stuff through.
I'm behind the idea of even just Dragon Tyrant or Drogskol Reaver and Slippery Bogle or Darksteel Myr. Any card that grants 3 abilities is relevant really. I have tried this with so many combinations in testing and the card either dies to Path to Exile/Swords to Plowshares/Wing Shards when indestructible or dies to sweepers when hexproof. I'm upset my group has so many sweepers in a casual format.
The games I did best in I just ended up using my Unburial Rites to hit the big creatures I'm removing. It's like, why do I want a 4/4 with 4 abilities when I can just have Avacyn, Angel of Hope. The games I was able to Buried Alive and get hexproof and indestructible I felt behind because I wasn't doing much except setting up a 4/4 with good abilities.
Certain dreams aren't meant to be. It is a good feeling when it happens but it's just not reliable. There are plenty of other decks I can use Avacyn, Tyrant, Akroma, Animate Dead, and Unburial Rites in and be happy. I just wanted to make this a thing but it has gone the way of my pillowfort deck and lost it's sleeves to another more deserving deck.
I hate that I have to say this, but it's just not workable in my group. I have 15 decks for casual night, excluding commander, so this one just won't get played.
How did I not think of Buried Alive? Any thought or changes? Cut to 2 colors or just black? I'm definitely at an empass here. Maybe run single cards to tutor with buried alive with Smallpox to discard them?
I was wanting to build a deck using Soulflayer for standard, but it's too expensive to play a deck for a few months and have to buy another. Anyway, the idea was to use Chromanticore, Sagu Mauler, Gurmag Swiftwing, and a few others with the "dredge" spells available to me in standard. It worked but my meta is super aggressive and only picked on the other midrange decks in testing.
I'm curious if the much wider pool of cards in casual could make this more viable?
I'm wanting to keep it to a 2-3 colors as I recently traded all my standard lands for commander stuff.
It seems pretty gimmicky but it doesn't have to kill everyone, just a fun deck for the slower underpowered games we play towards the end of the night.
This is all I have that I carried over from the standard build.
Can this even be a thing? I am after a few creatures that do something other than get put into the yard. I'm thinking Fauna Shaman could be added, but how about cards like Ill-Gotten Gains or Dark Deal?
So, I'm looking to build a deck that is midrange control. I am not interested in using blue. Actually, the only card I'm positive I want to use is Restoration Angel or Skybind. I have 4 of each lying around doing nothing and I love them both so much I want to play them. I have considered cards like the primordials and the titans, as well as good ole thragtusk, but I don't know if that strategy is powerful enough to play in multiplayer. I love to destroy things and I also love to bring stuff back. Drawing cards isn't the only card advantage in the game thankfully.
I also have too many Mirari's Wakes lying around, so maybe that could be a direction? Lots of mana to play my spells is always good, and the boost isn't bad either.
I know that is really vague, but I'm really open to suggestions on this one. I know the kind of game I want to play. Big come into play abilities that do stuff to things. I also would like to limit it to 2 colors if possible. A lot of my shocks and checks are in other decks and don't want to spend too much more right now (besides on the nonland cards). If it has to be 3 color I have the lands for junk since it has all my favorite colors.
So, I know this is a little odd, but I had holiday pay on this check because the payroll was messed up last pay. Anyway, I just bought sets of everything we discussed (to work on the numbers) plus everything I needed for a Fluctuator, Songs of the Damned, and Exsanguinate deck (we all have combo decks and we usually play 3-5 a night with only them since they are quick) and my Waste Not deck that was very much inspired by lists by Prid3. I will post the list that works out but I am mostly excited for the nostalgia that comes with the deck. I always love talking multiplayer with you guys and will be posting new ideas soon, since I still have holiday pay left over.
Keep brewing, guys. I appreciate the help and attention as always.
Unfortunately, several from my group have moved out of the area looking for work. My group is down to just 4 and it's rare that we all get together. Multiplayer games for me is limited usually to 3 people, and often there's only 2 of us that can get together. If only this game didn't have such a stigma of dragging nerds in, I'd have several more involved as they come over often for board games but I digress.
That being said, I am thinking I should try to stick with the Scion of Darkness plan. I'm wondering if a more CoP weenie type approach would work, kinda like uw heroic is doing now in standard. I don't have to have 4 big creatures, just 1 that I can protect as it will garner the most hate.
Is this getting closer? Or do I just drop the scion? Only reason I'm leaving in the high priest is because I will be occasionally sacrificing creatures. Not looking to drop a million dollars on this so thankfully clerics sell for basically candybars.
I recently acquired several of the clerics from onslaught block. A couple friends of mine used to run them back when they were new. We were all fairly new to magic but this was always a powerful deck and a tough one for us to beat. Anyway, he recently rebuilt the deck with a couple tweaks, and it's awful. The cards are over 10 years old, so the former deck couldn't be created from memory. It may be because we're all considerably better players and deck builders, but it also feels like the cards just pale in comparison to elves or goblins. They always did to a degree, but basically, I just want some input on building clerics for multiplayer. Now, he only had the more traditional cards. I'm more willing to branch out into some other strategies (aside from the lifegain combos)
Anyway, here is the super rough list made from cards I have.
I actually thought of Mulldrifter after I posted last night. Only issue is he doesn't always leave a body after he does his thing but with Oona's Prowler in play, it should be enough to deter the opponent from attacking, and if they are discarding cards in the early game to make an attack, as you said, that's not terrible.
The only reason I have Oath of Ghouls is so I can discard whatever cards I have no matter what, and take advantage of the draw each turn while still getting a creature. The board state I have in mind is 1 of each enchantment. I draw four cards a turn, and then I get a creature back. So, I get 2 zombies for "free" and then I get to cast the best creature in my yard.
I decided to drop the Ob Nixilis, the Fallen because he's really against what the deck is trying to do. I replaced it with a Gempalm Polluter. It does the same thing for much less, plus I can draw. I have enough fat creatures in the deck with flying (Wonder) so another really doesn't do much. Plus, this is an instant speed "beat your dumb fog" that can't be countered.
I think this is much better suited for what I want to do. I'm going to toss it together and see what happens as gameday is 2 days from today. As the group improves, I will update it and probably update on here as well.
Semi unrelated note: Another way I'm deterring the growth of turbo fog in this group is by making a Runeflare Trap deck. Don't want these guys thinking it's unbeatable. Had another one of them text me saying they were making it so I'm fighting with my own Howling Mine deck this week.
I'm not justifying this thing as not a broken deck. I have a few different circles of friends who play magic. One group is why I want to rebuild Oath. They come over and play whatever they want. Balance is a cheap purchase. So is Tinker. And they both see play with that group in 4x. It started as one player playing balance in a honden deck. And it's actually very well built. It gets off the ground fast and locks every player at the table out. But it's only because he has 4 balance. 4x Tinker is just as bad. Finding the absolute best card in your deck on turn 3 and tossing it into play is doesn't leave many outs. So, when I say I want this to be rude, I mean it. I may actually take the advice for Earthcraft and Squirrel Nest. The Leyline combo doesn't seem bad either.
As far as the tutor effects, I will take that advice too. The only reason for this thing to exist is to give them the feeling of hopelessness I feel when playing against their decks. By all means, let's aim for a win asap.
As for the discard spells, they are really only for one player in the group. He plays counters in half his decks. Clear the path, and the others will go down very easily. All this being said, let's relist.
More broken? I still resist blue. I caved and bought a set of Damnation as I need one for my commander deck anyway, plus 2 for this, and 1 because I'm really a completionist at heart and 3/4 isn't complete. So, what I'm asking is, is it going to have a ridiculous win percentage which is what I'm after, or is it going to be awful?
I did a bad thing and decided several in my group were ready for me to rebuild Oath of Druids. Simic Oath is old. I don't like the combination or spending too much money on stupid Force of Will. I play casual, limited, and standard. Maybe once a year I dabble in modern. Just not buying them. This is Extremely loosely based on a vintage deck I saw recently. I do mean extremely.
Could need some help. It seems to find the Oath ok, but the life total drops low quickly due to black's draw spells and sylvan library. That's the only reason for Exsanguinate. It makes a come back a reality. Even a drain for 3 can equate to 9 life which is only a turn. I don't actually have Damnation which is why I'm leaning hard on the Black Sun's Zenith. Would Pernicious Deed be better suited to wipe the board? Want to make this a powerful once a game night deck. Basically it just ruins their plan, and the demons just tutor up new answers and eventually win with demons. It's what anyone could want! Garruk, Apex Predator is just a backup plan. As well as creating blockers, or gaining life. It was originally another Vraska the Unseen but I wanted another powerful card that actually did something after it destroyed stuff. Prid3, I expect you'll pop in for a visit, so please shed some light.

Lastly, I do not have Well of Lost Dreams. I do, however, have 2 Mind's Eye that I bought for a couple commander decks and ended up not needing so that's an option. I also have like, 30 Sign in Blood, Read the Bones, and Dark Prophecy. Are any of those options? Dark Prophecy is a little worse than say, Underworld Connections, but it doesn't cost mana. Maybe Graveborn Muse or Greed?
this is where I am right now.

Looking for some serious help. Here's looking to you prid3. Also, I already looked at the primer, and it wasn't all that helpful.
The only reason I even have a discard outlet besides the Zombie Infestation and Psychatog is so I had an outlet in case the only thing I had going for me was Oath of Scholars. That being said, I am dropping the Putrid Imp. He has proven to be... awful. How do we feel about cards like Skirk Ridge Exhumer. I would use Pack Rat but he suffers the same fate as Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

All of this in the open, here's the update:
3x Oath of Ghouls
3x Zombie Infestation
4x Baleful Strix
3x Nighthowler
2x Mortivore
1x Kagemaro, the First to Suffer
2x Avatar of Woe
1x Gempalm Polluter
1x Vengeful Pharaoh
4x Oona's Prowler
4x Mulldrifter
1x Wonder
3x Psychatog
2x Halimar Depths
1x Cephalid Coliseum
4x Drowned Catacomb
2x Evolving Wilds
9x Swamp
6x Island
I think this is much better suited for what I want to do. I'm going to toss it together and see what happens as gameday is 2 days from today. As the group improves, I will update it and probably update on here as well.

The "maybeboard" includes:

1 Inquisition of Kozilek
1 Hymn to Tourach
1 Smallpox
