  • posted a message on [Primer] Restore Balance
    Hi Everyone, I was playing a RW prison deck for a little bit with boom//bust and ensnaring bridge and fell in love with the style of play but couldn't make it work and everyone kept telling me to play restore balance so i looked up some stuff and threw a list together.

    This is a 10 post 15 land deck because stoney silence sucks.
    I have been doing really well with this deck at my local modern nights (usually between 16-20 people) 3/1 or 3/0/1 every time so far.
    I can not figure out what to do about the infect matchup where if I dont find SSG and firestorm/cascader I just sit there with my twiddling my thumbs. The kiora and and garruk are actually recent upgrades from a Ral Zareck and Jace, Architect of Thought which I believe will be better by far.

    I really like the idea of eidolon of the great revel and everyone is correct about goblin guide being easy to come out, but adding them makes my main board enlightened tutor even better(can find equipment, vial, spirit of labyrinth, eidolon of rhetoric and eidolon of the great revel) I really like the brave the elements but now I have to many red creatures do I found ramosian rally and put it in the sb because I am afraid of pyroclasm. Completely forgot about of blood moon and magus. I also really liked zo-zu and imperial painter runs wasteland with the full set of moon/Magnus so should still be fine with ghost quarter.
    This is an aggro deck that is forcing the opponent to play the way I want them to play( can only do things on your turn, make you wait a turn till at least my turn after you play a fetch land to use it, make powerful sculpting cards into dead draws) which is why I'm ok with both vial and grand abolisher
    Here is the updated list
    // Deck: Legacy hate (60)

    // Lands
    1 Arid Mesa
    3 Clifftop Retreat
    4 Ghost Quarter
    1 Marsh Flats

    This is my first thread on this site so a little about myself
    Been playing magic for 13 years, but have only really been competitive for the last few. I have been playing at a casual play group that has recently been drastically upgrading the quality of decks being played, so much so that several of us (mistakenly) thought we could do ok at the gp that was here in Phoenix about a month ago.
    After being destroyed I went and started actually researching legacy and this is my first attempt at a real competitive legacy deck(low budget). It attempts to abuse some common legacy play to my benefit.

    // Deck: Legacy hate (60)

    // Lands
    1 Arid Mesa
    3 Clifftop Retreat
    4 Ghost Quarter
    1 Marsh Flats
    1 Mountain
    6 Plains
    3 Sacred Foundry

    // Creatures
    2 Ethersworn Canonist
    3 Goblin Guide
    4 Grand Abolisher
    3 Mirran Crusader
    3 Mother of Runes
    3 Spirit of the Labyrinth
    3 Stoneforge Mystic
    3 Tunnel Ignus

    // Spells
    1 Batterskull
    3 Brave the Elements
    2 Enlightened Tutor
    1 Godsend
    3 Lightning Bolt
    3 Swords to Plowshares
    4 Æther Vial

    // Sideboard
    SB: 1 Cursed Totem
    SB: 1 Electrickery
    SB: 1 Grafdigger's Cage
    SB: 3 Leonin Arbiter
    SB: 3 Leyline of Sanctity
    SB: 2 Oblivion Ring
    SB: 2 Pithing Needle
    SB: 1 Rest in Peace
    SB: 1 Torpor Orb

    Choices

    Creatures

    Ethersworn Cannonist-cheap beater that slows down much of the format. Works well with enlightened tutor package and aether vials mean it's mostly a1 sided downside

    Goblin guide-most efficient 1 drop damage dealer I could think of in my colors. Not much else to say

    Grand abolisher- started with Thalia, but I run too many spells for her, and he makes my stuff all uncounterable which him plus vial makes sure most of my deck hits the field

    Mirran crusader- very strong clock, doesn't die to main legacy threats (goyf, nimble mongoose, abrupt decay), loves to carry equipment

    Mother of runes-great protection

    Spirit of the labyrinth- I feel like this guy is a hidden gem, he negates the effectiveness of many spells in the format at worst(elvish visionary, baleful strix, gitaxian probe etc) or turns cards into a liability (brainstorm, glimpse of nature). Pairs well with vial and grand abolisher and enlightened tutor

    Mystic-win package

    Tunnel ignus-I'm going to get some gripe about this card I am sure, but he was THE reason to go red for me. I know he will very rarely actually trigger but anytime hee does its worth it. I made him better by using vial to sneak him inresponding to a fetch and I purposely used ghost quarters so that I can force either a 50 cent wasteland (fail to find) or free lava spike.

    Spells

    Brave the Elements- get around blocks for lethal, protect my creatures even if they trick mom activations out of me. Shores up biggest fear of pyroclasm/rough effects. Also great to turn combat on my favor.

    Godsend-probably should be jitte, but again this is budget friendly and fairly strong in the format of 4 of creatures. You can block with Goyf/delver/mystic/DRS etc, lose your guy before damage so my guy doesn't die, and I basically surgical extracted the rest of them from your deck giving you even more dead draws.

    Rest of the spells are just good utility. + packages

    Sb is supposed to expand my tutor targets and deal with some of my fears in the format.

    Unfortunately I used to use cockatrice to test decks but it seems to be down now due to legal reasons, so what do you guys use?

  • posted a message on Solidarity-current day look at an old deck.
    So I have been looking around for a good solidarity build for about 2 months now, and what I have noticed is that it seems like no one has really attempted to make this deck better in the last few years. I figured I would post a list and maybe get some advice/interest in this deck.
    // Deck: Legacy Solidarity (60)

    // Lands
    11 Island
    4 Polluted delta
    2 Misty rainforest

    // Creatures
    4 Snapcaster Mage

    // Spells
    2 Blue Sun's Zenith
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Cunning Wish
    2 Force of Will
    3 High Tide
    4 Impulse
    3 Meditate
    2 Pact of Negation
    2 Peer Through Depths
    2 Remand
    3 Reset
    3 Snap
    3 Turnabout
    2 Visions of Beyond

    // Sideboard
    SB: 1 Blue Sun's Zenith
    SB: 1 Brain Freeze
    SB: 1 High Tide
    SB: 1 Hurkyl's Recall
    SB: 1 Laboratory Maniac
    SB: 4 Leyline of Sanctity
    SB: 1 Pact of Negation
    SB: 1 Reset
    SB: 1 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
    SB: 1 Twincast
    SB: 1 Wipe Away
    SB: 1 Words of Wisdom

    So I am sure that I will get some comments on some of my card choices do here are some reasons.
    Snapcaster mage- instant speed works better than twincast that old builds used because it is not a dead card if you have no other cards to cast. Uses three lands to double cast High Tide just like twincast but actually floats 1 blue. Also works well with Snap.
    Snap- gives me a little bit of early disruption versus "fair" decks like stoneblade, delver and goblins if need be. Great interaction with Snapcaster mage
    Snap-Snapcaster-Snapcaster-Snap-Snapcaster-other spell
    Gives me extra mana and 5 spell count".
    Some are worried about StP(or other kill spell) in response but it is a negible effect most of the time.
    Peer through the depths-my other options for this spot could be words of wisdom, peek, or opt. I don't want them drawing that FoW or the blue card to cast it if I use words of wisdom and I prefer to dig 5 and pick what I need then just guess with peek or only look one with OPT.

    Less than 4 FoW- FoW is of course the best Counterspell in the format, but in a combo deck like this two four oneing myself hurts more than other decks and during combo pact of negation is actually better because you can cast it and Snapcaster it later without spending extra cards or the extra mana.

    Teferi+ lab maniac- my sb option if I'm afraid of leyline of sanctity or something like gaea's blessing
    Leyline of sanctity- again I am combo and hand hate eating pieces of my combo make it very very difficult to combo, also why I use 4 cunning wish with all pieces of the combo in SB
    I am sure there are other things I missed so ask and I shall try to answer
