Dec 17, 2009Excise posted a message on The Top 10 Keyword Abilities Ever - #6This is a good choice. I will be interested to see what beat it to the top 5 given how strongly it fits into your criteria. I agree with everything you said about it and would only add that unlike Flashback, this keyword took a really goofy idea and made a strong and satisfying mechanic out of it. That alone would qualify for a higher Innovation grade if I were making this list.Posted in: Improbable Things

I'm wonding why you didn't compare Flashback to Buyback? Flashback is such a better balanced version of that spell. I know it is more similar to Splice and you addressed it there, but isn't there a conversation to be had about how Flashback made Buyback fun? -
Dec 17, 2009Excise posted a message on The Top 10 Keyword Abilities Ever - #8Lifelink is also a great keyword because it added a new demension to Black. Before lifelink, Black had plenty of spells like Drain Life, but after lifelink it exploded with flavorful creatures and effects using lifelink. Lifelink as a link between White and Black creatures was a welcome thing. Now if only they could find a keyword to unite Blue and Red...Posted in: Improbable Things

I would also add that Double strike incentivizes people to block, which is a strategic and important addition to the game. People are forced to block a double striker and it makes for more dynamic combat situations. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
You have made me a very happy man. We are still missing Ceior and Midloth though so I'm not sure where they will fit in. And with Orien and Styre both being green white, I want to see what happens next. The color order is obviously important. Will Orien be GWU or GWB? Or will it only be GW period.
Also, Popeclone did not tell me anything about the clue you texted him. maybe he will post it here now...
We're having a good time here, sorry it's been annoying you. Maybe Wamyc can have the thread name changed once cards start getting spoiled. Something like "Preview Thread for Requiem (Now with Cards!)"
And there's still room between Palladium Myr (190) and Silver Myr (202) for Phyrexian cards...
I like Havenwood Guile, but again it is overcomplicated and Forestwalk could be easily removed to simplify it. Also, the ability to bounce it back will not be as good as those sorts of spells were back when combat damage used the stack.
Havenwood Dryad finally explains why Forestwalk was added onto all those cards and I get it! Since there's no activation cost to the tap ability, it doesn't need the "May remain tapped" clause. It's a good uncommon.
Ystane, the Eyes of Havenwood is needlessly complex and its abilties work well within this sebset of cards (since all your unblockable deathtouchy guys untap to block) but I wouldn't enjoy playing it. Rather than all the landwalking abilities and its tap ability it could just have troll-shroud. It needs some work.
Landmark 1G
Sorcery
Landscope 1 (You may put a land from your hand onto the battlefield tapped. For each land put onto the battlefield this way, draw a card.)
Or
Slipstream 2GU
Sorcery
Landscope 2 (You may put up to two lands from your hand onto the battlefield tapped. For each land put onto the battlefield this way, draw a card.)
And I do think they should enter the battlefield tapped for balance.
Coming up with 2-3 cards per slot is a lot to ask, especially since you only presented 5 cards yourself. I'm going to put up another 20, but it looks like this thread is over.

Yeah, they all sound like the names for places. I would be surprised if they were people or objects. I can't wait to see what other new names we might get next week.
When I first put up my reaction to the intial Tweet I commented that these may be hub (or shards).
So basically I always thought they could be 3 color hubs. We already know Wamyc has tri-lands of sort in this set from what he told us when he first saw the Shards of Alara partial spoiler years ago. And because he told me that he'd be spoiling the colors of these 5 things over 3 weeks it's seemed to be clear.
I am not sure what to make of these extra names but they do seem to be planets or planes or locations. And where is Black's representation?
It's weird also since Orien isn't one of the 5 names. Wait, hold on. Phonetically it's:
R=HO RE AH
G=O RE AN
Could the next name be W and start RE AN? Would Wamyc really use phonetic tricks to name 3-color groups?
No one is suggesting it could be a mono white creature, but that it could be a Chinese Menu Style creature, either:
G for Deathtouch
W for Lifelink
or
W for Lifelink
B for Deathtouch
or
B for Lifelink and Deathtouch
I would be really surprised if this card and colored artifacts existed in the same set or block. R&D are really much more disciplined than that.
These are the names of our 3 color locations, though probably not planes like in Shards.
Horia is going to be either RWU, URG or WBR. We'll see what the next clue is...
Yeah, I want to get second set "starring" art for the cards "Jugan's Apprentice" or "Battle for Horia."
I am worried that it would be 1 of 5 or 10 lands in a cycle all asking me to remember to add or remove flux counters every single turn. Talk about busy work. Flux as a keyword isn't a good idea. The upkeep trigger is just too much to track if there are 3-4 of them on the table at a time. I can see a lot of confused gamestates or cheating going on.
And having both sides provide mana right off the bat does make it better than basic (River of Tears nonwithstanding.)
Here's an idea.
Flux Land B
Land
T: Add 1 to your mana pool. put a flux counter on Flux Land B.
T, Remove a flux counter from Flux Land B: Add W or U to your mana pool.
It's hard to compare this directly to Calciform Pools and friends, but Flux Land B might even need to enter the battlefield tapped.
My favorite of the bunch. drawing cards for life is very black, and random auctions are very red. I think you can probably. say "Each player secretly bids an amount of his or her life total, then all bids are revealed simultaneously. The highest bidder loses that much life and choses a player to draw that many cards." It's much more exciting than Pain's Reward.
This is a good card design since I imagine it would be the silver bullet in a counter heavy format. The only problem is that you risk a lot when it dies. Do you put its +1/+1 counter on an opponent's creature hoping to tie it up with the next Saboteur you cast, or do you put it on your own creature as a happy ending and potentially shoot yourself in the foot when you draw your next saboteur? I would hate to play with this card because the decisions it asks me to make are too hard.
I think this card is undercosted especially since it allows you to target yourself and your buddies in a two-headed giant or multiplayer game. This wouldn't come out of development costing less than 4 or 5.
Nice limited fodder. Reminds me a bit of ContaGion. Also, I assume this is one of many such cards in a format, because Black is least likely of any color to want to reward you for playing multiple colors.
