  • posted a message on Looking for cross platform collection manager, that knows about non-gatherer cards too (FNM, etc)
    thanks for reminding me.
i think i checked that one, but in the first round, i ignored wed-based collection managers.
on a sidenote there is also Deckbox.org, i used it a lot of times already for trading, it has a database with all the cards, but the export function has some problems, as some trivial sets are not recognized by other applications/sites

i like an inventory manager app, where i can syns the database via dropbox, so i don't risk the chance of losing the database if somehow the site goes down

in the past few weeks i tried a few apps/applications for MTG inventory management, here are is a summary of the results:
    PC applications:
    • MagicAssistant: as mentioned before, no promos of any kind, that is not on gatherer, but at least it runs also on linux
    • Deckedbuilder: no promos (takes database only from gatherer), the interface is really intuitive tho - windows only
    • MTG Studio: it's database contains all the cards from gatherer and (possibly) all of the promos, but it's a commercial software, possibly aimed at shops with large inventory? it's database at is seems is SQLite format, which is not really feasible for me to sync via dropbox, also i don't really trust non-text database for magic cards - windows only
    • MTG Album: it has a database with all the cards, it's also free. minor downside is, that it supports few import formats - windows only
    Android applications:
    • Delver Lens: it's database has all the cards from magic. it would be the perfect app, but it's monthly subscription based, which i can understand, because it has a nice card scanner, but i would really rarely use that, and paying monthly fee just for an inventory application is not feasible for me
    • MTG Cards Info: only gatherer database
    • MTG Familiar: only gatherer database
    • MTG Frog: contains all the cards, but the application does not yet have an inventory feature, but may be added in a future update, according to it's menu
    • MTG Library: contains all the cards, but no inventory feature, only a favorites list
    • MTG Scanner/MTG Manager: contains all the cards, but i could not find any inventory feature, also it seems, that it's still in early stage, so that may be a future feature
    • MTG Unofficial: only gatherer database
    • MtgDeck: only gatherer database

so far it seems i'll be sticking with MTG Album for the PC and keep an eye on MTG Frog

For years, I've been using MagicAssistant, because it worked both on linux and windows, but lately the interface for some reason became very buggy and also it has a major problem: it updates only from gatherer, so it does not know about FNM promos and other promo "sets"

I have an account on deckbox.org, but i'd rather use an actual windows/linux application or and app on android, than to do things trough my browser.

I downloaded the trial version of Deckedbuilder, but that one also gets updates from gatherer, so no promos there.

Does anyone know an application that is cross platform and knows ALL physically printed cards?

Haven't checked in on this deck in a long time. Can someone explain the importance of Chalice MB?

best example is the tournament i had yesterday (note first: 2 chalice main, 2 side):
    - first round bye
    - second round other guy outright refuses to play with me because he hates playing against tron, so he gives me the match and goes home
    - third round against 100% netdecked naya-burn: turn 2 chalice on 1, turn 4 chalice on 2; game 2 turn ~3 chalice, few turns later wurmcooil, then swing and go for 3 to the more safe 9-life zone, GG on turn 4
    - fourth round against rakdos burn (silly fun home modifications with Browbeat and Contaminated Ground): game 1 turn 2 chalice on 1, then platinum angel a few turns later, basically took a few damage from eidolons and swiftspear and was on 4 life when i cast the angel; game 2 chalice on 1 keep me alive until i mindslaver him, then cast all of his 5 1-mana spell from his hand, but it's not enough and he topdecks into a smash to smithereens; game 3: turn 2 chalice on 1, turn 4 chalice on 2, GG

it is basically our only realiable out against rdw, especially if they don't play Vandalblast or Shattering Spree

  • posted a message on Is combo viable in a control and aggro heavy meta?
there was a very small event in our shop, and i managed to do 2-1-0 with a mono-blue mill deck.
haven't played standard constructed since aether revolt, so i'm excited to go to the game day.
    basically i have 2 options:
    - turn the mill deck into UR, something like this: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/700506#paper with minor tweaks for our meta
    - go with mono-blue gearhulk control (all the counter and card draw, and basically win with gearhulks)

our meta will look something like this:
    - one UR control
    - one grixis control (basically UR + splash for Nicol Bolas)
    - one esper control (some homebrew with lots of counterspells)
    - temur energy beatdown
    - some kind of mardu midrange
    - GR energy (pummeler, cub, fling, etc)

chances are REALLY slim for someone to show up with ramunap red, as everyone long traded away all those rares, that are played in the deck, maybe one guy could possibly get half of one

in an unknown meta, i would be inclined to play the mill deck, but knowing my meta, i think the control deck is better.
the main reason i'm asking the question is that i almost exclusively played control in standard, and don't really know how such combo deck would fare against so many control decks.

    thanks

    hello.

i will be attending a ~20 player EDH tournament this weekend, but still haven't decided what to play exactly.
i know nothing about the meta.

not a spiker, just love playing tedious, convoluted decks, that win in the very-late game, also i like playing as much counterspells as possible.
so mono-blue is the way for me...
that is why i would like to try Baral, Chief of Compliance.

i have not played the format at all, since the transition to the 20 starting life, so i don't know much about the decks, that have emerged because of this.

question is, does Baral come close to what it is on MTGO? (i know, here you don't have access to Mox Diamond and Chrome Mox).

other decks i have are Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, Azami, Lady of Scrolls, or Arcum Dagsson

    thanks

is Spellskite still needed in the sideboard?
if infect disappears, the only real application, that i can think of would be to steal a Temur Battle Rage?

one of my friends pulled a Gideon of the Trials promo from his kit.
i know, that sometimes promos end up cheaper, but this is a special case.
should he sell it or wait at least a few weeks?

pulled the following at the pre-releases:
    Aven Mindcensor invocation
Liliana, Death's Majesty foil stamped promo
    Rhonas the Indomitable normal

any of these have chance of really high spike?
or i should just sell them as soon as possible?

i was keeping these for some time now, waiting for a possible blowout.
now, the next ban&restrict announcement is getting close, i thought i'll ask if any of these is worth keeping for the long run?
    1x Saheeli Rai
    1x Saheeli Rai foil
    1x Chandra, Torch of Defiance

just finished a 10-man event, and had one of the most stressful matches, since i'm playing this deck.
    finished the swiss 4-th place:
match 1: 0-2, friend playing Tamiyo-spirits-collected deck, game 1 had tron, no threats, game 2 he topdecked an avacyn
match 2: 2-0, esper control, auto-win, of course opponent: "you had good draws"
match 3: 1-1-1, abzan value, guy played super slow, had him in game 3, but ran out of time, but game 2 managed a spectacular Ugin after casting thirst-thirst-snap-thirst, again opponent: "you had good draws"...
match 4: 2-0, grixis delver, sort-of auto win, he never really stressed me

lost in the finals against mono-blue delver+thing.

in the semifinals played against a really well rounded jund deck, got all the stuff that's really needed for it to be competitive.
game 1: i open a Gemstone Caverns, exile a snapcaster and keep angel and titan in hand next to 2 other tron lands.
he plays some inquisition, bob, then i find the third tron piece and cast titan turn 4, killing 3 of his 4 lands
game 2: 1 have 2 tron pieces + map in hand, he fulminator mages one of my tron piece, few turns later i draw an Academy Ruins, but i'm forced to play a tron land, so i can Mindslaver him, he reveals basically nothing. on my turn i play simulacrum, he has goyf (5/6 or something) 1 huntmsater and 1 bob on board (huntmaster is flipped), i'm at 8, block the goyf, go down to 2, he inquisitions me and plays the second huntmaster and passes me the turn. on his end step i put slaver on top.
    here the fun begins:
    - he has 2 huntmaster (human form) on the board. on my turn i cast slaver, so it will not flip because of me not playing
    - i'm at 2 life, so even a single flip could kill me
    - because of that i just can't skip trough the hoops and call it a game
    - i have to play at least a spell on his turn too

luckily for me he has a bob, so he starts revealing some spells each turn, so i can cast something on his turn, otherwise the huntmaster would flip.
here is what i had to do
    - first i play a ravine, then fulminator mage it
    - abrupt decay a wolf token
    - kolaghan's command a huntmaster
    - play second then third bob
at this point he just draws enough card, that i simply use the second command on huntmaster and as he goes down to 1 life, while having no more huntmaster on board, i say, this is over now, but i troughtseize him just for wrap things up.

  • posted a message on When is a store's eligibility checked to keep current level?
My friend has a hobby store, that is also an advanced level Magic store.
We have a small playerbase, so everyone worked hard last year, around end of april/beginning of may (not sure exactly) to host a 32-player event (as the rest of the requirements were a bit easier to complete), so the store can qualify for advanced level.
Sadly the store got the advanced level a bit too late to qualify for any WMCQ event hosting, thus the only events that we hosted, that could attract a bit more players from other towns were PPTQs and GP trials, and none of them had 32 players.
I asked my friend, and he is not sure about this either: is store eligibility checked at specified dates each year, or when you complete the goals, a timer is set for that goal, and you have to renew it within a year?
For example: you host a 32-player event on the 14th of june, in 2016, does that mean you have one year, till june 14th of 2016 to host another such event to keep your level?

    thanks.

just went to a 8-man casual modern event.
    here is my list:

btw gut shots are against infect...

    game1: 2-0
played against a friend's jeskai Spell Queller/Geist of Saint Traft, no real actual problem, as he relies solely on Geist or grinding out the opponent, no actual late-hit-the-board-i-win-the-game win-condition.

    game2: 2-0
jund, the full package, or close to it, game 1 i cast Epiphany at the Drownyard first time X=2, then snapcastered it for X=8, second time i needed only a land to cast Ugin (without tron, as i managed to land a Chalice on 1 early).
i wiped away his 3 goyfs, then ground down his life with snapcaster, to finish off with gearhulk.
funny thing is we were not paying attention, and i played epiphany as a Fact or Fiction... but it didn't matter, as i only saw 3 lands with the first one and inly needed a single land with the second.
game 2 he played t1 Nihil Spellbomb, Abrupt Decayed my map then landed an ooze, he was stuck on a few lands early game, game was close, but ultimately managed to win

    game3: 0-2
    eldrazi tron
he plays some kind of weird aggro package, sometimes with both Karns and Ugin, along aggro creatures.
always manages to draw into (sometimes without the help of maps) into tron (he plays correctly btw, he's just that lucky)
sometimes i saw Eldrazi Temple from him too.
of the creatures he playes almost 4-of mimic, TKS and smasher.

the most i ever did against him was a 1-2, never actually managed to beat him with blue tron EXCEPT when i bring taking turns, he basically has no chance, as once i wrecked him, when he cast a turn 5 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger

but the problem with this is, that that deck looses against most of the other decks in out local playgroup, that tron easily beats most of the time 2-1

right now i'n thinking about splashing red just for Crumble to Dust, since he has no real backup plan after that, other than to slowly build up mana normally.

any other suggestion would be highly appreciated

TL;DR: how do you beat eldrazi tron

If he's not running chalice of the void ceremonious rejection could work

thing is, that just delays the inevitable...
and does not deal with the on-cast triggers of the titans
