I think mono Green is going to need some help with removal...So I am hoping, but also expecting it to at least be Beast Within... I could always use another. It took me long enough to hunt down 4 copies for cheap back when I was catching up to Innistrad block
Just speculation, but it seems likely that a company doesn't want to put all the extra work and money into that new project without shifting resources for it from another similar program. But that doesn't explain where player rewards promos went...
anyway, lots of fun all the same, traded soul of innistrad for perilous vault, another disk is always nice, no complaints, lots of people smiling and having a blast.
I placed second in both on Friday and won both of my Saturday drafts. I really enjoy the awkward and somewhat unpredictable politics and alliances that happen in this format. The card value is great (right now at least) and I feel like I got way more than my money's worth. Lots of cool interactions this weekend.
Frankly I didn't put a lot of draft-value in the conspiracy cards. I only played and drafted a couple in my last draft. I didn't win WITH them, but definitely stabilized because of them. They caused me to lose one draft on Friday night. One guy had five dethrone, hexproof blue guys with lots of conspiracies dumped on them. Some conspiracies are super powerful, but take some selective pre-planning and grabbing them super early. Often times I wasn't willing to sacrifice a sure thing over the hopes I could pull the conspiracy together and make it worthwhile in-game. Overall, this was a blast, and I plan on playing with friends outside of the LGS who haven't gotten to see it yet as well. Looking forward to playing for the next few months til all the stock has disappeared from the city...
These are precisely my feelings on magic card sets in the last several (many) years. The best part of going through old cards - actual old cards - is trying to find how far out colors spread. The focus on cycles in new sets ruins two things, the smaller of which is how unique a cycle was, the larger of which is the exploration of how far you can extend each color. You may have some duds here and there, but at least you're not tying up 15+ cards of design space in every set with boring cards where two or three are useful and the others were an attempt to match similar abilities of each of the other colors' similar cards... Cycles used to be neat, but they were also more scarce. These cycles have become more abundant for a number of reasons (speculation ahead), it must be easier for playtesting a bunch of similar types of cards to make sure you're not breaking the game; they also opened up a lot of slots as sets became more frequent and the number of new cards per year overall increased - core sets even have tons of new cards them! Cycles just seem to be used to fill out all that new terrain, and I think we would benefit more from better designed, unique cards.
