    Hi.

although the old one had the best art in the history of magic, im happy to see it back, even with different art

The old cards will no doubt be showing up at your local games if you play any standard. I've got one (and have been looking for three more). Smile

They seem to be pulling out all the stops here. I am delighted to see the dark elves returning! The dual lands, the guild lands, BoP, singets, guild mana, guildmages... It's all so incredibly awesome. Gogo Ravnica, this set is going to be lovely!

I will buy at least a booster box and a fat pack on day one, probably read the book (1st time ever), and draft my brains out for a year. I think I also might get heavily into block constructed. Can FNM be block? (I guess I can look that up). My local store would probably spread Ravnica block for FNM (at least alternately) if I asked (assuming that's allowed).

A thought, will elves of deep shadow be an elf druid?

    Amazing set!

Edit - no block constructed for FNM. Arena I guess...

Diabolic Tutor is black and doesn't involve life loss, and Jedit already included a functional reprint in his initial post. So you are both wrong.

You're right, thought that cost 2 life for some reason. I propose
diabolic tutor be removerd from future core sets and replaced forevermore with grim tutor! Diabolic tutordoes seem to break black's flavour. Even bringer of the black dawn's ability costs 2 life.

What were they thinking when they made ninth?

Next time I will refrain from using the word 'always' quite so many times. Thanks for keeping me honest.

So, nobody seriously considers Culling the Weak, despite the fact that black's sacrificing is quite similar to red's randomization... ...black can get Seething Song types of cards, it just has to sacrifice something or pay some life if the cardmaker felt somewhat risky.

    Hmm...
There were many dark ritual type cards printed that had black flavoured drawbacks. Culling the weak, songs of the damned, and organ harvest for example.

These drawbacks were not included to allow black to perform non-black feats. The drawbacks were added because dark ritual is overpowered. These drawbacks allowed black a weakend version of an already black ability. They were never intented to break the colour pie. WotC seem to be very serrious about the colour pie, and black has not seen acceleration since cabal ritual. As of onslaught, all these cards have ben red, and this is no coincidence.

The best possible hope for mono black short term accelleration is burnt offering. This card might see reprint because it is sort of a red/black card. As the red/black guild will not be featured in the base set, I doubt we will see such a thing just yet.

I susspect that we will get a gold short term accelleration card in the Ravnica block. Red/black is possible. Anything with red in it is a candidate. Red/green seems much more likely though. Maybe like a cross between seething song and channel the suns. perhaps rrgg for rg?

Would you say that Gamble is not in flavor for red? Isn't it just a Diabolic Tutor?

In Alpha, demonic tutor was the only tutor, and it was black. Since then, all colours have had tutor type spells, and all with limitations. Green can only tutor for lands and creatures. Blue tutors for instances and sorceries (and artifacts). White tutors for enchantment and artifacts, though artifact tutoring seems to be switching to blue. Black still gets "any card" tutors, but they always always always entail life loss. It's the life loss that makes the new tutors black.

Red has almost no tutors, but they have one of note. Gamble allows "any card" to be fetched. It is in this way more similar to black tutors than to blue, green or white tutors. But, there is no life loss penalty, only a random discard penalty. Hence this is not a black flavoured, it's red flavoured.

Remember - all colours have tutor spells, and all with there own limitations. Red's limiation is chaos. Consider goblin tutor! Noone (official) ever said that tutoring is a black ability. However, WotC represenatives have said that short term accelleration has been moved from black to red.

Also note that gamble is an old card, and that the refinement of the colour pie started around onslaught. I think gamble still fits into red's slice of pie, but as a general rule you cannot go that far back for examples of colour/power distribution. The colour pie has been resliced!

WotC seem very proud of the modern colour pie. They may bend it, but I just can't see a complete 180. Maybe burnt offering.

    Happy gaming.

  • posted a message on Clone?
    Hi all.

If clone comes into play at the same time as another creature ( Tooth n Nail , Defense of the heart , Living Death , etc), but there are no ohter creatures in play, can clone come in as a copy of the the other creature?

I would think 'no'. Since the other creature comes into play at the same time as clone, clone's controller cannot chose the other creature as a "creature in play" until clone has also already come into play. The creature in play should be chosen "as clone comes into play", not after, right?

I get confused sometimes over permanents simulataneously coming into or leaving play. I know a lot of Judges hang around here, and any help would be appretiated.

    Thanks.

    Quote from Talruum Ninja »

...lands only have 11 types. 5 appear on one card. Period. 5 are basic land types, and Lair.

    (boldness added for emphasis)

Wow! There's one lcard onwhich five land types appear? Sounds like Unglued III:

    Domain
Basic Land -- Mountain Swamp Island Forest Plains
    "Dual lands schmual lands"
    -Timmy, Power Gamer

I can just picture the rainbow textbox! Only kidding.

Seriously though, What five types did you have in mind? I can only count four land types which are unique to a single card (tower, mine, power-plant, locus). I realize that it is possible that you accidentally included Urza's with the above four, and I do not mean to nitpick.

I must, however, also acknowledge the possiblility that you forgot to list Urza's separately (or confused it as part of a single subtype), inwhich case there is a land type that you know about and I do not. If such a land type exists, I would love to kbe filled in. Smile

I am a big fan of land types, and would like to see more mechanics with such a bases. More locuses, more towers, more mines, and maybe some new lair lands (which don't bounce other lands). Some all new land type would be cool too. Cloudpost was a disapointment because, unless they print another locus, the card might as well have no type at all and refer to the cardname. I do hope the rumors are true concerning nonbasic lands with basic land types in Ravnica. These would make all kinds of cards much more fun!

    Happy gaming.
