Ondal: That SoFaF is absolutely gorgeous.
Galspanic: I'm jealous of your Star Wars plains. They have a wonderful looseness to them, but perfectly capture light and mood.
Madmanny: Really digging the originality of your work. Not too many attempt what you're doing.
djpattiecake: Well done. Most of the alters that borrow bigup's techniques are clumsy and poorly cut; these are neither. Many of the images line up in a clever way as well.

To be fair, it was uninformed. A lawyer is offering legal assistance to a person and you assumed that the lawyer was unaware that he and said person are in different countries. Plus, your comment only said that the laws differ from country to country which implies that that's the information you think he didn't know.

This is the problem with basically everything. We set these bollocks standards and expect it to be fine, but people act horrificly towards another gender or race and they get away with it. Why is it not okay to show a female's nipple? It was done very tastefully, unlike some of the 'SFW' work that has bee submitted which is vulgar and insulting.

Yeah, society has some weird double standards but let's not debate this again. Standards here are based on creating a safe environment for users of all ages but also from all moral & religious backgrounds across the world.

posted a message on [Official] QUESTIONS, Requests, & Help Thread
    Quote from Peithetairos
    Hiho,

this is my first post in this forum and apart from playing the odd Friday night magic session and some casual magic, I am also very interested in 3D-Art. I have thousands of surplus commons and uncommons and selling them in bulk is as good as throwing them in the next garbage bin. I wanted to give some sets away to people starting out with MTG, but then I still have hundreds of cards left.

The idea now was to make some 3D life counters out of the surplus ones, keep some for myself and possibly sell some of them on the bay or elsewhere. Obviously I didn't plan to sell hundreds, but mor euse up most of my commons and uncommons as fillers or layers and reinvest in cards I need for a Commander deck or so.

I made a first attempt and it is a fun hobby in itself, yet I was wondring if it is legal to sell such life counters (abacus style) or tokens. Are there any issues regarding copyright infringement if I use an orginial magic card and make it 3-D?

What if I recombine different cards? Say I have this very nice card I like the person in the foreground of, but the background is not what I invision? I thus replace the background with say a standard land. To freshen it up even more, I cut out all the text boxes and have underneath the actual 3 D art another 'window' which features parts of another card or maybe a standard land in 3-D.

In this way I would use magic cards to create my own artwork, using artwork by different artists.

Are both cases legal or is only a 3-D card without alterations legal or is the whole concept a grey zone? I see that some people are selling those cards, as does Seishirou Ookubo who supposedly invented this art (and he is featured on Wizards website). If I acknowledge the artist(s) (in case of the original card this is already the case on the card, but for the background, lands etc. possibly not visible anymore) on the back of the counter, am I on the save side?

If it turns out it might cause problems I will continue doing the 3D stuff for my own use. Is it then legal to share those pictures of my works online? Again, I see hundreds of such photos in this forums, yet, it does not automatically imply it is legal.

I would appreciate it very much, if someone could help me with this question.

    Yes.

Its my understanding that the foil is opaque so they have no need to erase any portion of the original card, just to cut out the foil sticker with an exacto and apply it to the card face. If I remember right the foil paper is already a sticker which makes the process pretty easy and can work with almost any inkjet printer.

    This is all true.

    Quote from Rocklobster
Paint also changes the weight / thickness of cards so if they don't alter it anymore than normal paint I gotta say they probly have a pretty cool gimmick going.

But if you read through this thread, it changes the thickness and stiffness of the card quite a lot.

Somehow I missed this... but thanks! The commissioner requested that I use the Temple of the False God I did a while back as a starting point, but other than that there's no specific inspiration. I think I wanted to convey a place that was desolate and bleak using a hot color palette. Most of my alters start with an idea for a color scheme.

I think people are kinda crazy if they think that .4g and 1mm make a difference. As said, Acrylic alters will have more impact and foils have an impact as well.

    This simply isn't true.

    Quote from wtwlf123
This isn't true. I have one of their cards, and hundreds of acrylic alters, and they're night and day different. Only poor quality alters make a noticeable difference in thickness, and they lose none of their flexibility. These cards feel different (they're quite a bit thicker, actually ...you can tell when you draw it versus a regular card; even through sleeves) and the flexibility is significantly different than a real Magic card. They're not the same as good quality acrylic alters at all.

I'm glad to hear you reinforce this. I've made some of these myself (it isn't difficult) and the difference in thickness and flexibility is obvious, even when sleeved and you're holding two cards sleeve-side up. I won't even use them in EDH because I can feel them & know where they are when I'm shuffling my deck; it's too hard to be honest that way.

It's been a while, but I think that I used regular fabric for some of the books I made. You can buy real book cloth here. If you end up using found or recycled or non-book fabric, it helps to starch it beforehand.
