I was intentionally trying to destroy that card to test durability so it does look rather poor. I also left one edge of the card unsilvered so that I could do some optical tests comparing both parts. I will get some better pictures that more accurately represent the final product. I'm encouraged so far by the mostly positive response!:D

Whats peoples opinion on that parts of the card that should be coated? Just the art? The whole card? The whole card except black borders? Everything but the art?

The thickness of the gold would be on the order of 5-15nm. This makes the gold roughly 80% transmissive, The texture will be more or less identical to a standard mtg card. I'm exploring use of acryllic sealent (which to my understanding is standard practice in graphic alterations) in order to prevent scatching and absorption of skin oils, which currently seem to be the two most difficult challenges.

TL:DR - The texture, art, bend-ability of the card will be uneffected, except for a slight gold sheen.

I'm a Ph.D. student in chemistry and I've been developing a process to gold plate cards. When I say gold plate I mean legitimate gold, not a gold colored paint or anything like that. I'm currently using silver in my prototypes (gold is expensive).

I've never really seen this done before and I was hoping I could do it to make a few bucks to support my MTG addiction.

Just wanted to know people's thoughts. Would you be interested in playing with a play set of say gold plated lightning bolts?

The attached images are far from the final product but just to give you a rough idea (and even then they don't really do them justice).
