Yeah, first off I did not say I wasn't going to format the deck based on categories. What I said was a explanation as to why my list looked like it did. I was waiting until I got home so I could use my desktop rather than my netbook. Thank you for making assumptions about me, and getting all self-righteous in the process.
Weird, thought I used the deck format. It's fixed now. I copy-pasted my deck from tappedout.net, it unfortunately doesn't break them down into categories, just alphabetically.
This is a budget EDH deck using the Eternal Bargain as the base. I've added some finishers from the previous commander set like [[Storm Herd]], and threw in a few of the Orzov cards from the new Ravnica set. I have not had a chance to test it out yet. In addition to the mainboard I've got a list of cards I'd like to include in the deck, but I am unsure what to cut from the current deck. Finally, should I include a few counterspells?
I'm usually the first or second player to be eliminated. In our playgroup there is another player who I usually end up getting into a pissing match with. He does something petty and annoying to provoke me, and I spend the rest of the game making sure he won't win. This puts me into a weak position, spending most of my resources to make his life hell. Either he eliminates me, or after I take him down one of the other player finishes me off. This happens in pretty much every game we play.
Rather than handicapping yourself, how about offering to help them optimize their own decks? Your situation sounds similar to the playgroup I'm in, except it is everyone else with the killer decks. I'm the one who consistently loses to everyone else. My friends are all very skilled and cut-throat players, and after seeing me struggle game after game, they looked through my decks and gave me suggestions/ cards to improve them. I came close to quitting for good, but with their help I actually stand a chance against them, and enjoy playing with them.
My friends and I have a gentleman's agreement against mass land destruction and infinite combos. With the new commander sets I discovered a couple of infinite combos slipped in by the developers. I decided to throw together one deck with as many degenerate and infinite combos as I can. This is the deck so far.
Some of the more obvious fixes for the deck include the red and black Primordials. I'm wondering if I have enough instants and sorceries to make charmbreaker devils worthwhile. I'd love some suggestions, particularly on more combos for the deck.
Well today I at least found the replacement for the Primordial in my Roon deck. Perplexing Chimera will be pretty nasty with the deck's blink effects, and will give me close to the same utility as the Sylvan Primordial.
Would the Primordials be overpowered if their ETB effect was changed to "When Cast"? They'd be similar to some of the Eldrazi in that respect, and that would take care of the blinking shenanigans.
What if they errated it to read:
"When Sylvan Primordial enters the battlefield, for each opponent, you may destroy target noncreature permanent that player controls. For each permanent destroyed this way, search your library for a Forest card and put that card onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library."
Let it be a may ability so people can abuse it if they want or use it to pick off a couple problem permanents.
I should have worded the poll "Which option will fix the Sylvan Primordial". As well as including a fourth poll option, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Rather than outright banning the Sylvan Primordial, could the card be fixed instead? I'd still like to run one in my mono green deck, it does have a Conjurer's Closet, but the deck is centered around green fatties with ETB effects. Anyways, here are a couple of ideas I'm going to run across my playgroup.
1) Make the Primordial's ETB be either a land tutor, or non-creature permanent destruction, chosen when the creature hits play. This gives it some versatility without nerfing it too much, and makes it comparable to the other Primordials.
2) Make the Primordial's ETB effect be a land tutor.
3) Make the Primordial's ETB effect be a non-creature permanent destruction.
What do you mean by chaining Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability? I thought if you use his activated ability a second time in a turn he just becomes another copy, it doesn't stack the power and toughness of the previous copy. Am I missing something here?
Child of Alara: Boardwipes on a stick. It's easy to assemble a lock and wipe the board each turn if you need to. Appropriate for control and land-based strategies. Progenitus: Your mana better be really good. Dies to Wrath of God. Karona, False God: Best three-colour general for tokens or tribal beatdown. Also a chaos/pillow fort card. Her drawback is huge but you can mitigate it by protecting yourself from attacks or killing the table the turn you cast her. Sliver Legion: Sliver beats. For Sliver players who want a more casual, variable deck than Overlord Sliver Overlord: The go-to Sliver general. Sliver Queen: This general enables a ton of different combos. If you like infinite creatures this is the guy for you. Scion of the Ur-Dragon: Good for dragon reanimator strategies or one-shotting people with general damage by chaining usages of his ability. Horde of Notions: Elemental tribal I guess??? The reanimation ability's cost is really high. But 5/5 haste/vigilance/trample is a good start if you want a five-color voltron general who's less combo-ish than Scion. Reaper King: Can be cast with any color of mana or only colorless mana, so he's suitable for strategies where you're not paying all five colors but still want access to all mana for whatever reason (casting opponents' spells, bringers, etc.) Good for control or blink decks, vindicates on a stick. IMO the "full tribal" build is boring but there's a lot you can do with this guy. Atogatog / Cromat: These cards telegraph "I'm never going to cast my general." If you're running a fast combo deck, you should be running Atogatog, because he's the coolest
I'd go with either Vish Kal or Anowon. Vish Kal has a fantastic combo with mikaeus the unhallowed, pretty much let's you wrath all of your opponent's creatures. It can be a little dangerous, in that it will skyrocket his casting cost if your opponents manage to take them both out of action.
