I loath foils. Mostly because all I ever had bent and on one the upper layer even went off. It was an ugly sight to behold.
Also: EDH decks are constantly a work in progress and getting foils of cards I would like to try out would be too much trouble.
I also have a weakness for the first print of a card. If it is reasonably cheap I will go for the first print. There are just very rare exceptions when the original art is really crappy.
Of yourse black border over white border and old frame over "new" frame (when was it? Around Eigth Edition?). Yeah I am an old nostalgia freak
Concerning lands, all four mountains from fifth edition are fantastic but why you no black border?
As someone already mentioned I also like lands that fit the theme of the deck. Maybe you can help me: my latest commander is Thelon of Havenwood and of course I am now on a quest to find the most rotten fungus-ridden swamps and forests.
For the swamps I though of the Kamigawa swamps #295 and #296 because they remind me of the Zangarmarsh area from World of Warcraft which is basically a swamp covered with giant mushrooms.
I tend to use only basics from the same set for one deck so in this case the Kamigawa forests look beautiful but are not really on-theme.
Do you have any suggestions?
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
I personally run him as a general, but he would be great with Thelon's pump ability on a bunch of fat fungi.
A Fling that hits all of my opponents is very nice indeed. It is a bit mana-intensive because I think I will have to use that ability the same turn I play Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord. Else my opponents will definitly see my intention and remove him.
I looked up all BG and artifact cards with convoke. Chord of Calling is already in the deck.
The next most appealing one to me is Sprout Swarm which is only good if the buyback is paid. So actually it becomes an EOT mana-sink. Endless Obedience has bad-ass art but I would rather use Reanimate for such an effect.
These are all good combos but I fear that I would have to dedicate too much deck space to tutors to find all required pieces. Some of my other decks have already ok-power-levels (and are using combos) so I think I will refrain from combos here. Squirrel Nest might eventually find its way into the deck because I can build an army EOT and attack on my turn. Still opponents will always see it coming.
If you have a number of ways to get +1/+1 counters then Rishkar, Peema Renegade can act as a sort of Rite. Luckily GB loves counters.
Thank you good sir for that suggestion - these mana cards are so good in token decks.
Also Rishkar, Peema Renegade does not neccesarily require +1/+1-counters - they can be any counters which synergizes very well with the fungi that are producing spore counters on thier own (btw: is this the correct plural of fungus in english? Or would it have to be funguses ?).
Another alternate wincon I found is Sporemound + Life and Limb.
I think it is a fun combo but rather fragile because it requires more cards to actually be lethal (like anything that let's us sacrifice creature for damage). Rise of the Dark Realms is another good late-game card (sometimes even finisher) but still pretty unreliable.
I am in the process of building Thelon of Havenwood.
I am not quite satisfied with the usual wincons (token stampede) and would rather have my Fungi sit around breeding.
What are some good alternate wincons in Golgari not involving combat damage?
Second question: do you know any effects that let all of my creatures produce mana somehow?
I already have: Earthcraft Cryptolith Rite Citanul Hierophants
Are there any similar effects in Golgari?
Ah ok then go for Scion of the Ur-Dragon!
Being a dragon fan-boy I have played A LOT of dragon decks over the last years and have finally settled on Scion of the Ur-Dragon because in that deck I can execute all dragon playstyles whereas the other decks limited myself too strong to one gane plan.
Heir is a bad card. Heir is functionally a more expensive Triton Shorestalker with a downside. If the attack is not lethal, our opponent just doesn't block. If it is lethal, we'd very much rather Just Kill Them than draw 3 cards. Unblockable is also not particularly great when our stuff is generally islandwalking through anyway.
That makes sense! Thanks for the explanation tuxdev!

I think about something like:
Shaman of Forgotten Ways
Epic Struggle
Vraska the Unseen's ultimate

I would also refrain from Silumgar, the Drifting Death because Dimir does not have the greatest dragons available.
I suggest you try a Jund list (e.g. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund). You have good ramp and with red and green very good dragons.

Why is Saprazzan Heir not good enough for this deck?
I did a thread search but it returned no results.
Has this creature been discussed?
Actually I am building it right now.
Check out my Zirilan of the Claw deck for some serious dragon action!
