Ideally they'll develop the Gatewatch during that time. We'll see them regroup on Ravnica, and see a few stories of them on Amonkhet scoping the situation out and planning. Getting a feel for the new plane none of them have seen before. Something toned down that focuses on them as characters at the challenge ahead on this new, mysterious world.

Knowing WOTC though, it'll be two months of nothing and then the Gatewatch will get thrown into the midst of another bloody war with Gideon whipping surral back and forth.

Gideon losing an arm… seriously? Gatewatch doesn't need to have members killed off or horribly maimed right out the get-go. The problem is how absurd defeating the Eldrazi was, regardless of how situational that was. Emrakul and SOI/EMN were an example of properly doing things. It both was and was not a victory of them - and a haunting ending appropriate for the setting too, having to wonder about Emrakul's intentions all along while she lurks in the moon willingly. But for how long?

The problem is the very battle which formed the Gatewatch isn't believable and didn't add dimension to the team, so the group formed on a questionable foundation by killing off a major threat. Fortunately their actions may have consequences as Ugin demonstrates, but for the time being it was a sour event for many to see major villains taken out like that by characters that haven't been adequately developed together (and for some, not enough alone, either).

I think the issue is plunging them into conflict all the time. Gideon has no hope or realizing his potential if he's just whipping surral back and forth. Kaladesh allowed Chandra to be more than comic relief. Nissa has potential as a wise stoic but needs more screen time despite having much of it in BFZ that didn't establish her enough (but does give her potential in her rivalry with Nixlis). Jace and Lilliana to me are the best examples of well-formed characters given Jace's past on Vryn and memory loss (a very good plot point) and Lillana's demon debt, her personality and her rich backstory with Jace, Tezzeret, Bolas and even the Raven Man, let alone her own Origin story.

Gideon seriously needs to be explored more as a character and fortunately we have Return to Theros to anticipate for that. I can see the GW concept headed in the right direction with Emrakul and do anticipate Amonkhet being a defeat for them that has them re-evaluating themselves, their purpose and the value of the oaths they've taken. No one needs to die or lose freaking limbs - but the Eldrazi proved their actions have consequences. Those are not immediate consequences, and I think Bolas is just the villain to deliver immediate ones that send them all back to the drawing board and allows for some dimension. If done right, having them ponder things can do BFZ and the distant consequences of that some justice, actually.

And let's not forget Bolas orchestrated the release of the titans that the GW formed to "defeat." I think something deeper is brewing which is why I'm choosing to remain neutral until I see more of this story method unfold. I do see potential in it. Nissa's home was harmed enough by Nixlis to maim her emotionally, all GW carry some sort of burden and backstory, Nahiri is out there - there's potential.

Kiora - This isn't so much an issue with a Gatewatch as with the writers, but Kiora was written TERRIBLY in some of the stories. I really wanted to like her but her excessively arrogant and moronic dialogue got in the way. She's still popular, apparently, so hopefully when she returns they can redeem her character, rather than continuing that horrible portrayal. But even if her writing was better, Kiora was still defined by her interactions with the Gatewatch (but then again, who isn't?). Without the Gatewatch, Kiora might have even been BFZ's main character. Again, this would require her dialogue not being physically painful to read. But anyone is a more interesting protagonist than Gideon, right?
Kiora isn't just arrogant, she's an outright fool and unrealistic. She claims she's defeated a true god when it suits her, yet denounces the presence of divinity. I understand the Eldrazi compromised her beliefs - and I'm sorry that foreign beings who could traverse the planes showed up at your home out of nowhere and wrecked it, but something tells me sending a wave to wreck the Meletis shore and stealing a weapon from a god people worship to protect them doesn't make you much different. Let alone messing with ocean ecosystems wherever she goes. Her banter during the Thassa fight was so absurd and unrealistic. No way she could undersell a threat like that. The remorse she felt having murdered Lorthos and the trickers with her irresponsibility and arrogance was far too short-lived. But I do believe she has potential now that Kozilek rightfully exposed her hubris. She still bothered me after that though as I was expecting she's be broken and pondering things rather than hurling entire ocean basins at people. Hopefully the Gatewatch relieves her of the Bident at some point down the line as she's clearly irresponsible.

Something went terribly wrong when i was more worried for Emrakul wellbeign then the Gatewatch...

The idea of the Gatewatch isn't bad, cheesy, but not bad. The execution that it was incredibly atroucious, one of the lowest point in the intire lore.
Tell me about it. Plot armor granting dues ex machina is more frightening than Annihilator on a hard-cast Emrakul. I will say the SOI storyline was conducted rather well, though. But I still get nausea thinking of how BFZ turned out.

So Tezzeret was rebuilt by Bolas. Question - what became of Silas Renn? I read he was defeated by Tezzeret but there's this weird part in the book about Bolas eating him or something, although the Wiki states he simply "lost horribly" and some of his etherium body parts were removed?

He fought Tezzeret outside of the maze protected by Crucius' son Kemuel. Started out as a battle of magic but descended into them punching each other in the face. Eventually Silas Renn had most of his Etherium body split in half when Tezzeret closed a gate (magical portal type) with the old man's body halfway through. He puts his remaining body bits into a state of sleep with some invasive surgery, etherium needle style, and then dismembers him entirely save for the guy's head.
That's pretty creepy… Another reason to hate Tezzeret. Since Silas' body was largely etherium, save for his head though, I wonder if it counts as him dying? Or if he's still technically alive?

Yay non-partners! I've got a Silas Renn percolating in the back of my head too right now. I think I'm finally going to use my Mask of Riddles, because Silas screams out for some type of evasion. At least for me, where I can expect tokens that don't care about deathtouch gumming up the path to value.
I'll have to find room for Mask of Riddles too. I was also thinking of that one Equipment that gives double strike so I can cast 2 artifacts. For evasion I have Thassa and Whispersilk Cloak (which I can search). I was thinking about Cobbled Wings and other equipments that gave more abilities too. There's one that gives +x/+x for the number of basic land types in play as the one exiled as well. Basically I just want to throw indestructible, hexproof, evasion and giant P/T bonuses on Silas Renn and have a clean field of him with a mass of artifacts swinging for lethal. There's also a one drop from AVR which I plan to Soulbond to him for Flying too.

    PS:

I like having only one Commander at a time. So it's just Silas Renn.

This is just for casual fun. The goal is to discard a bunch of artifacts, mostly equipments, re-cast them from grave with Silas, buff him up and attack for commander damage with a Silas that has a bunch of abilities from artifacts.

Trying to keep this budget. I'd love to play the Swords and all that but I'd rather stick to cards $10 and under since it's just a deck for the lulz.

Heck, I could have grabbed Lotus Bloom itself for 0 and had a Black Lotus at my opponent's end step in other circumstances. Amazing combo in Silas Renn EDH.

Yeah, I think Whir might be one of the sleepers of the set-
people are scared by UUU, but I frequently cast Chord of Calling without any Convoke,
and lots of EDH decks are already prepared because of Cryptic Command.
I was only able to get one yesterday. Pretty upsetting. I ended up buying the second one I needed online and will just have to wait for shipping sadly. People in my area are all hoarding them. I don't think it's going to be necessarily expensive and even if it was, people could just buy the damn things if they're not going to use it immediately like I am for EDH but only hoarding for value. Regardless I do agree that a few years down the line this card will no doubt be highly sought IMO. UUU scares people in the color that does artifice best? That's what perplexes me. I agree it's a sleeper for now.

Lorwyn felt like a true fantasy world. Idyllic, Celtic, very reminiscent of high fantasy with faeries, elves, etc. I do wish it had humans, which I suppose it could in a remote part or whatever if they really wanted it to. That said, I just loved how beautiful it was. And cute too - merrows and faeries pranking eachother with spells, the playful and vibrant nature of the art while delivering strong fantasy tropes. IDK it's one of the first images that come to mind when I think of the word "magic"

Again, loud voices. Those people are more likely to respond to the polls Maro is doing, not to mention Dragons of Tarkir being less popular than Khans of Tarkir has a bit to do with Dragons being a poorly-designed set with few dragons and no fetches (compared to Khans being a slightly better set with fetches). The point I was trying to make is that not everyone thought that dragon-ruled Tarkir was worse than human-ruled Tarkir.

I am also a believer of "non-blue characters having functioning brains" and thought Nahiri beating Sorin was great. However, Ugin is arguably much stronger and has a better grasp on planar things than Sorin does. The thought that Nahiri could infiltrate Tarkir, pull off some stunt to take out even one Dragonlord without Ugin noticing is a huge stretch. If Nahiri isn't stupid/gone mad with power, she would seek out Ugin before trying to fight dragons so this plotline seems bad. Ugin himself is more likely to try and return the plane back to human rule than Nahiri is. Ugin also has more importance in the overall plot as an Eldrazi specialist and a possible adversary to Bolas so having him go down to Nahiri is a bad idea. Then again, Creative does whatever it wants and likes making planeswalkers look strong so whatever.
    Um. No henny.

That's market research speaking. And if I must accept that Kamigawa is "unpopular" even based on market research well over 12 years old now, then it's a fact that the data from two years ago regarding Tarkir is the real deal. And for the record, I have been highly vocal about hating both Tarkirs. Even more than Ravnica and Kaladesh. Maro has stated the desire to return to wedge block ruled by khans based on the lessons learned.

While I agree a planeswalker should not be able to take out the dragon lords of Tarkir, that didn't seem to help when a small group of them took down two Eldrazi titans more ancient than the very planes those characters were from, or when one of them talked her highly fortunate way out of being killed by a legitimate god, stealing her weapon in the process. In some instances, WOTC frankly screws up its consistency and skews things in favor of planeswalkers almost always. Its obnoxious and undermines the head legendaries of certain planes to do this which should never be the case. I only excuse it because Avacyn could have killed both Jace and Tamiyo, Thassa and Heliod had never encountered a planeswalker before and the Silence had deprived them of devotion (convenient), and well, there's no excusing BFZ but I try to ignore that ever happened.

But as far as Nahiri one-shotting the dragon lords, she's a planeswalker and regrettably, they're going to get treated like god-like beings despite the mending that says they're just mages with the ability to traverse planes. And they're always going to be the main character - because planeswalkers. And when it comes down to a legendary or a planeswalker dying, despite how popular and unique to a world that legendary is - the legendary will die. We have a whole multiverse full of these dumb walkers and leave it to the unique, flavorful characters that set the tone of a world to get the axe in order to tell planeswalker soap operas.

So yes. The precious dragons are dead. And that's obnoxious because Bolas said to Lilliana that breaking her contract was no easy task when it meant challenging 4 demon lords - a great feat even to him (as it should be) as he admitted. I'll buy Bolas defeating Night's Reach despite her being a major deity on Kamigawa because he's Bolas. Any other PWs, beyond perhaps Ugin, and it's just embarrassing to even imply that. Now the Sisters of Flesh and Spirit vs. Bolas - not so much IMO. Legends like them, or Thassa/Monocolor gods or Avacyn should be a big deal, always. Planes worship these beings. So give me a break when I read about some dumb arrogant fish crawling up to the god of the sea and facing an entire plane worth of krakens with summoning spells cast by one mortal mage. No dear.

That's the part that lost you? Not the skywhales, the telepathy, the airships, but a 15-year-old with her own fleet?
Makes sense though. Just because it's a fantasy story with magic doesn't mean that's a reasonable thing. How does a 15 year old acquire an entire fleet? She may have powers but she's in a world where everyone does. Judging it from that perspective yeah… we can't say "oh well by magic of course!"

I wonder if Baan is going to be a recurring character, if not full on antagonist. If so I have to think he may taverse the Multiverse warning other walkers of the Gatewatch's marvelous ability to destablize things.

Perhaps- but Baan strikes me along the lines of Nahiri- outside of the context they were presented in, they probably wouldn't be villians at all.

Like, now that Nahiri's done on Innistrad, she probably has zero motivation to completely screw up another world. Hell, I'm betting there's a good part of her that's wracked with guilt for what she did on Innistrad.

Does Nahiri know that Ugin was dead/in a coma while the Eldrazi were breaking free? If not, she'll probably target Tarkir next. She's already tried to murder an entire Plane to get revenge on one guy; I doubt someone like that can even recognize guilt...

Agree on Dovin, though. He does feel Azorius-y: it's about maintaining order. Lawful neutral, to use a D&D term.
I bet she'll target Tarkir next too. And go there, won't find Ugin so she'll take her revenge by murdering all his kind there - thus ending the dragon rule and returning Tarkir to the days of khans, which was inevitably more popular anyway.

If they were trying to hose UW Flash, why not ban Spell Queller or Avacyn?

It's possible that Reflector Mage was either too good in Saheeli Twin (great interaction with both of the combo pieces), or would have been oppressive with cards in Amonkhet (remember it was supposed to have rotated by then) and they knew it would have to be banned eventually.

This. White gets some Blink effects that are oppressive with Reflector Mage, and probably made Saheeli Twin too strong in their testing.
As for Spell Queller, it is good, but not as oppressive as Reflector Mage with Panharmonicon or Blinks. It can only ever be a temporary counterspell/tempo play.

gideon, ally of zendikar is what is problematic for both UW flash and vehicle decks. - Without gideon boardwipes and control decks could deal with these two decks easily! So why would they ban TWO(!) cards while banning a single card would immediatelly have the same effect on both decks?
    Because plot armor.

Agree that I'd have preferred Gideon to be banned.

Of course most characters will be fit. There is a lot of conflict and demand to be on the move. Many are warriors or engaged in battle.

Agreed. This might have mattered back in the days of Alpha and CORE sets but, really MaRo, no one would bat an eye if iconics didn't appear on every single plane.

I feel like Magic went through a bit of an "OCD" phase back when they did the great Creature Type update and the implementation of NWO. They cleaned up quite a few things and, on balance, I think it was a good and vitally necessary exercise for design to reach its current (incredible) state.

However, it also led to really pointless box-checking (and overly-obsessive) stuff like "We must have an 'iconic' in every color and they have to show up on every plane or else, somehow, 'Magic suffers' as a result".

The flavor of Magic hinges on the color pie, not five arbitrary tribes that happen to work well as finishers. I mean, you can just replace them with plane-specific finishers of the same tribe...like the Gearhulks. And free up Mythic slots for more interesting designs at Mythic level.
Exactly. I'm pleased someone see's my point.

    Quote from ArixOdragc »
"But a cosmic horror story needs a core detective! That's the role Jace filled!"

My answer to this is, it didn't have to be Jace. In fact, it shouldn't have been Jace. It should have been someone with a real connection to Innistrad. If the main "detective" character of the story was, say, Sorin, Thalia, Arlinn, or some other denizen of Innistrad, then there would have been real purpose behind the whole thing.
I seem to recall a certain astronomer working with Tamiyo on researching Innistrad's moon. You know, the object which ended up sealing Emrakul. I can't quite recall.

Jenrik was killed off and left cardless because Jace took his role. I like Jace and I did feel a telepath was perfect to be the lead investigating protagonist. SOI/EMN had a good story IMO and was handled well. I can see both sides though. I mean let's be honest, Tamiyo was the best aspect of that. But she was given a respectable, balanced role without overexposing her. The fact she had to be Bant bothered me too - but that's a game logistics issue. I think overall SOI/EMN was fair enough.

I have mixed feelings in that the Gatewatch stories take up room otherwise used for flavor stories which don't advance the plot, but are pretty critical to setting a plane's tone. While I feel these stories are pointless overall, sometimes we get gems like Emonberry Red, or the ending to The Sea God's Labyrinth. I enjoyed those, although frankly, they didn't advance any plot (they're nice to have during lull periods like we had recently rather than getting no story). But the Gatewatch stories taking up that room is welcome IMO, because it's consistency and they ARE an interesting group of individuals which are capable of making a difference.

I do expect Amonkhet to be their first loss though. Charging headstrong into Bolas's lair. Yep. And I expect them each to planeswalk individually somewhere else, and have an after-story of them all reflecting on their own broken spirit before regrouping.

He's part machine. I assume it means he's able to open up portals and transport things with the bridge's core himself, without the remaining machinery of the device itself.

Keep in mind, a big part of the value of Jace's looting is how his backside can use the discarded cards later.

That said, Baral is still a very strong card.

I'm not sure if you are joking, but if it only cost 1 it would be too good (two cards for 1U mana plus Revolt trigger). Although if it cost 2, it would essentially be a slightly better Divination which seems fine to me.

Talrand, Sky Summoner and Docent of Perfection would be nice as alternative wincons, Patron Wizard for support, also where are Snapcaster Mage and Augur of Bolas? I'm building a similar deck myself
Talrand was in the deck but I removed him because he felt too slow. The deck really only counters when relevant. He can get crazy with infinite combos but frankly I have the game when I go off anyway, so keeping track of their tokens was pointless. Especially with Thassa who can end players herself and put in work elsewhere. So I preferred her to him even if Talrand is a wizard.

Augur of Bolas is interesting. I do play Snapcaster Mage. I must have forgotten to list it.

I'm considering dropping Aetherspouts honestly. It hits only one player and only their attacking creatures. I already have Evacuation, Cyclonic Rift and Propaganda. Blue tends to need a lot of protection, but I'd almost rather have speed and win sooner as a method of protection

I'm considering Augur of Bolas as you mention, and Sea Gate Oracle as well. The new Baral will need a place in here too, as will the Homunculus for EMN.

posted a message on What's your opinion on 'The Gatewatch'?
Hating on Jace is pretty unfounded and even obnoxious IMO. Jace having no depth/personality/character? Wrong. He has a pretty extensive back story and an intriguing one at that. The idea of a telepath with a lost identity from his duel with the sphinx master who abused him, now on a journey to discover who he is and how that plays into his moral code is a very noble journey for someone in a clan like the Gatewatch. Especially the thought of his promise to see his mother again, having now forgotten even her face. Jace has always been a great player analog and his origin story as a gifted by bullied youth living in poverty on Vryn has this charming Harry Potter vibe which connects with many of us because we were in similar situations ourselves.

Gideon is a Greek hero who suffered Greek tragedy on Greek mythology world, and has allowed it to shape him from then on. Not to mention he then travelled to Bant, which has heavy Christian influences (angels, knights - a lot from Arthurian era) as a contrast to Greek mythology too which is a point of interest.

Lilliana's backstory and her debt to demons and the influence of the Chain Veil and her own selfish desires muddled by her lingering affection for Jace has always been a point of interest for many. She's on a dire precipice of losing control - dead because of her fear of death. Seeing that journey involve a team now is an interesting perspective for me. Lilliana had difficulty overcoming this alone and has been seeking assistance as of late. Now she has allies. How will her curse affect those who join her on that dark journey?

Nissa has potential because she was such a staunch racist favoring Elves - but the Eldrazi threatening all life alike on her home plane - Elf, human, beast or otherwise, and the Eyeblight tribe of Lorwyn taught her otherwise. This profound lesson of having love for all beings of nature - even the trees themselves as we saw in BFZ - is intriguing. Now with that outlook applied elsewhere, it's a good ground for the team to always value life wherever and however it exists.

Chandra has history with Gideon. She's been more comic relief for me and her role on Kaladesh fleshed her out more as an individual. She's similar to Jace in being a misunderstood youth ostracized for her individuality. I like that she brings a sense of strength in overcoming adversity to the team.

posted a message on What's your opinion on 'The Gatewatch'?
I'll reserve my opinion until I get a better indication of where they take the Gatewatch idea. So far it's had its high ups and low downs, and some pretty abysmal downs (largely in BFZ block. Gideon whipping back Ulamog is a notable one). That said, I do agree the rotating cast of characters made the multiverse seem bustling and diverse and now it feels a lot smaller. The Gatewatch has potential and I've had moments of both liking and resenting it as a concept. I do get a sense that it's growing on me. The issue I have with that, though, is that part of the reason the Gatewatch is taking off is because its foundation is based on things established by the previous storytelling model - Jace and Lilliana's romance and conflict, Bolas and his machinations, the Eldrazi as threats, Sorin, Nahiri and Ugin, etc. Exploring that territory is what is really propelling the Gatewatch now with Emrakul sealed and Tezzeret a threat and Bolas on the horizon for Amonkhet. This isn't exactly new ground for the Gatewatch itself. IDK, a more consolidated story is a double edged sword. The multiverse seems smaller, but there is consistency in how the plot is approached. I'd say I learn more toward the previous model with a rotating cast, but I have enough reason to give the Gatewatch idea a chance because I do enjoy the prospect of diverse and powerful individuals teaming up.

I think they made the right call with the cast. Gideon needs to be developed more and has a lot of potential too. I enjoyed glimpses of him in BFZ which didn't involve fighting, but him being a hero in other ways. Such as encouragement and caring about people or proving to be a competent leader. The prospect of him being a co-leader with Jace is room for interesting interactions to build his character.

The issue with the Gatewatch is it feels they were thrown into a major conflict against very major villains. Then those villains were Ex Deus Machina because friendship. That has left a sour taste wit many - especially when the highlights of BFZ, which established the Gatewatch, were Kiora charging Ulamog with Lorthos, Tazri's interaction with Kozilek's distortion field and Ugin's anger with the Eldrazi slaughter. As in, nothing to do with the Gatewatch. Still, the cast had every reason to be on Zendikar when they were, and the set-up was respectable. I just wish we had gotten into the character's heads more individually before the conflict. Too much of BFZ was devoted to Nissa whining and Gideon whipping surral back and forth - both literally the case - instead of exploring who the characters were as people and how the events of Zendikar affected their moral ideology relative to the Eldrazi threat and influencing their upcoming oaths. But I felt like the SOI/EMN story cleaned up the inconstancies in quality that BFZ had. And did a good job of recruiting Lilliana and getting inside her mind, which was arguably the greatest challenge for the Gatewatch model and yet was probably done the best out of the 5 oaths so far.

Let's evaluate the Gatewatch's victories thus far:
Defeating Ulamog and Kozilek, saving Zendikar
Being tools for Emrakul to seal herself, saving Innistrad

Then we recall that the opponents the Gatewatch "defeated" had their release engineered by Bolas himself. Think about that for a moment.

I do not think Amonkhet will be a victory for the Gatewatch.

My favorite part of the story is when Hidetsugu fights Keiga. I remember he definitely involves himself with the Yamabushi and may have encountered Kumano.
Let's see if Caranthir can confirm, but I don't recall Kumano appearing, even by mention. Nor Ink-Eyes either.

Kumano was not mentioned by name in the novels. Hidetsugu went to persuade some yamabushi masters to join him on his revenge, but they were less than enthusiastic. He ended up killing the masters he negotiated with and taking their eight pupils with him to have his own yamabushi army.
So it is likely that Kumano is among those yamabushi masters? I don't want to go out on too much of a limb and include him in the list if he's not heavily implied enough, like Sachi was.

No, it is not likely he was killed by Hidetsugu. Sachi was not "heavily implied", but outright identified by everything but her name. If one of these masters was Kumano, we would have been told. Remember also that Kumano himself was a bit of a hermit.
Poor wording on my part. Sachi was all but named for sure. Good point about Kumano.

Alright, just to confirm for those reading, Ink-Eyes (and Higure, and essentially all Ninjas) were not in the books at all. I noticed today that Konda and and Nagao appear in the artwork of Vassal's Duty, and in the artwork for the UR "Bonds of Fire and Ice" we see Godo departing from Hall of the Bandit Lord, which is a Legendary Land. So I bought one for my Kamigawa story deck. Konda also appears on the card Reverence. Tenza and Oathkeeper are Godo and Takeno's legendary weapons respectively - which are not mentioned by name like the jitte, but are described. The only weapon described but not on a card otherwise is Hidetsugu's tetsubo I believe.

I suspect Bolas sent Tezzeret to collect powerful artifacts, and a planar gateway was the most impressive of them. It may have been his intention all along to have such an artifact, knowing Kaladesh was the plane most likely to be on the cusp of such technology. His intentions may be to use it to transport other impressive inventions to collect, and eventually, people. Tezzeret was useful to him as a PW. Imagine an entire plane's populace, like that of Amonkhet, becoming functional planeswalkers as well while devoted to him. He could easily overrun planes that way and amass legions across worlds with such an invention that turns all his minions into plane-wide threats that seed worlds.

    Eiganjo, Minamo - yes.

The soratami city above Minamo is in fact called Otawara. Oboro could be a palace in Otawara, though.

Shinka appears, but just as the name of Hidetsugu's dwelling (cave), definitely not the keep on the card.

I really do not know we can identify Tendo as the Heart of Frost, as the location was not a bridge at all, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, I am a big nerd when it comes to Kamigawa novels. These were the first Magic books I translated into Czech Smile

( tap symbol : Add W or G to your mana pool.)

Frigid Grassland enters the battlefield tapped unless you control at least 3 other snow permanents.

Not overly powerful, need a certain dedication to snow to work, either via basic lands or other permanent. Would make a lot of people happy, including me Smile

    I would love this.

We are long overdue for the return of Snow and for a Winter World that features it.

I'd love a Christmas themed plane. Snowy angels, elves, icy things, pretty magical lights, auroras, cold starry nights, people huddled near fires, snowy peaks basically looking like winter wonderland Switzerland. Cottages. You know, basically North Pole tropes. It doesn't have to be too explicitly Christmas, but in the same sense of Innistrad being Halloween World to an extent.

Had to do a quick vote change after I found out 1 was best XD Interesting Zendikar is as low as it is. Is that just the bitter taste leftover from BFZ block I guess?
I like to call it the Kamigawa effect. Where a plane with a promising theme was ruined by circumstance. Kamigawa was low power after broken sets, and had the wrong focus overall. BFZ design was horrible following interesting sets and had an entirely wrong focus. And this resentment happened to Zendikar, among the most loved planes, let alone the one first subjected to market research.

So really, it comes down to - don't trash loved planes. And don't run with the wrong focus. What's left to love about Zendikar, honestly? Its charm was being a massive plane of discovery and adventure. A sizable portion of it is literally dust now.
If you're going to do it, at least do it with an interesting conflict and not faceless, emotionless, thoughtless eating machines that all look essentially the same and have no discernable goal other than munching on Zendikar. If the BFZ story had to involve the Eldrazi at all, it should have been centered around Ob Nixilis manipulating the Titans in a plot to regain his spark.

Don't make the "villain" the natural disaster itself. Make the villain the man behind the doomsday machine. Sigh
The main titans ended up being remarkable villains (if villains at all - which was an intriguing concept) and I do feel Ob Nixlis did serve that role, in part, too. The issue is, BFZ/OGW should only have had the two main Legendary titans. No spawn. Just them as the antagonists. All the other cards should have been Zendikar related. In fact, having had all titans depart Zendikar and a return there be about learning how to defeat them may have even been superior to compromising Zendikar as a setting.

Any idea on Mikokoro, God's Eye, Shizo or Hall of the Bandit Lord appearing in the books? It's my understanding none of those do.

Right. I believe Oboro was the capital, but regardless it's an image of Otawara.

Tendo Ice Bridge depicts a bridge in the Tendo peaks, and among those is the Heart of Frost, which is the steep mountain haunted by the Yuki Onna. So it may not show the exact mountain, but it is the general location of it. Untaidake is in this area too, and has its own card, but like the lands I listed above I don't think it appears in the books either? I've been doing a search and haven't found any of the other lands by name in the books - but I worry I may have missed them because of situations like Sachi who appear but are not mentioned by name.

Glad to see we have something in common. I LOVE the Kamigawa novels perhaps even more than Godsend. That's saying a lot as a major Theros fan. Czech men tho <3 annnnyway. Wish we had any idea what Ichikawa was. All the other Myojin were called by name. Why did we end up with this vague mess for Blue.

Pretty sure we never saw Godo in the center of his territory (he's almost always at the frontlines or paying someone else a visit), so I don't remember every seeing the Hall (he's pretty much the only known Bandit Lord). Tendo Ice Bridge isn't Legendary, so it might stand there are several bridges among the peaks of Sokenzan.

Another known place that has been visited was the Honden of Night's Reach (although the one Toshiro visited was more or less the spiritual link point of the the physical ones rather than the physical one depicted). It could be possible that when he "silenced" Life's Web he also paid a visit to her Honden. The Honden of the All-Consuming was also mentioned, although never directly seen (nor on a card).

Talking about Toshiro, the Jitte was so important it probably warrants a mention (before you ask I don't think any other equipment was of any importance).

It was never mentioned by name, but the entire dream-sequence Uyo attempted to trap Toshiro in could possibly be a reference to Meishin, the Mind Cage, I mean the entire scheme wasn't explicitly named, but it was pretty much the only direct mind-game played in the entire story and the generics (thoughts=dreams, -X/-0 a reference to trapping) do match somewhat. The enchantments are a difficult bunch to translate over.
Yep, I play cards like Honden of Night's Reach and the Jitte in my Kamigawa story themed deck (in my signature). I meant to focus on the character cards themselves though. I'm pleased that I made this thread since I was missing Seshiro's children which I had forgotten also appear. I hope I am not missing any others!

Interesting theory about Life's Web. If that's the case, I'll have to add her Honden to the deck. Will go back and read that section.

Gideon has a lot of potential. He had moments of promise in BFZ in which he was a very inspiring leader. Sadly, BFZ was just too choppy to really establish anything, and almost completely compromised Nissa's potential, too. I can see many avenues where Gideon's character could be taken and developed further. His origin story gives him a good foundation for having adequate dimension. Suffering a loss like that in a Greek tragedy fashion on Greece World really allows much room for something great. He just hasn't had the chance to really shine.

I think Return to Theros would be a good shot at revisiting the implications of Gideon's journey when he returns home to face his demons. We'll see.

Some of the conflict in Theros was silly and unnecessary. Xenagos and his plot should have taken priority on the cards only (and on a limited number of them). There was no need to have gods vs. mortals, Nyxborn attacking and even the loss of devotion was not favorable for the set mechanically. Just another example of WOTC taking things to excess where it shouldn't, and compromising its own otherwise good work. War: The Gathering is just obnoxious. Too much emphasis on reminding everyone that MTG is a battle game is too literal and smothering and ruins the spirit of the fantasy and magic elements it features. Tone is down. One central conflict is fine. And it doesn't need to be represented so literally.

Theros naturally will have hoplites to defend, scenes reminiscent of the Trojan War (such as Launch the Fleet), and all that. If anything, hitting the popular tropes and seeing actual glimpses of the world of Theros itself proved more popular than just random battle scenes for the sake of it. Xenagos as a false god was the plot, and I loved the cards that highlighted that while still allowing us to see Theros in its natural state - its monsters, its Greek trope cards, its general idyllic environment and yes, even its soldiers. I don't doubt Innistrad was the same way - less cared about the conflict cards and more so for the horror tropes being hit and favorite tribal cards. If anything, the conflict aspects of the story detracted from seeing Innistrad itself, and this was not as favorable (Emrkaul and her influence, etc.).

I think certain planes should just showcase themselves in peacetime in the majority of cards. Capture the identity of a world independent of the story or conflict in the majority of the cards so we have a sense of being on a different world. And not just the same homogenous scene of conflict.

I wouldn't mind Return to Theros being more reminiscent of The Odyssey actually. I'd love to see Ajani and certain Gatewatch members embarking on a journey of discovery through the mythical land of Theros in an attempt to understand its gods and find the secrets of life and death in order to restore Elspeth. Facing challenges along the way, from monsters to god trials, various quests, etc. Involving the defeat of Ashiok somehow is warranted depending on how conservatively it's done. It'll be a shame if the return just ends up making one Neo-Walker OP even relative to the gods and making it all about the Planeswalker drama show with Theros as a backdrop for it all only. Especially if it gets trashed in the process like Innistrad and Zendikar were.

I'll wait to see how it's done, but I hope I won't end up resenting Ashiok being there. In a plane with actual gods, especially one like Heliod, it's a little silly having a Planeswalker - again - be the major villain. There's so much going on with Theros already with the murder of Elspeth, Ajani's preaching, the theft of the Bident, Xenagos and what he did, etc. A god of love born at the end of it would be lovely tho~
