    I hate Ravnica.

And I hate Theros. But many people love both and are very eager to see their return.
Difference is, this would be a second return to Ravnica, not a first.

Interestingly, the things WOTC admits it did wrong with Kamigawa are the exact mistakes they repeated with one of the most popular planes in MTG recently - Zendikar (in BFZ). Focus was on Eldrazi instead of Zendkiar was the main issue, whereas for Kamigawa it was the Kami/Shinto instead of Japan World aspects such as Kamigawa's Ninjas, Samurai and the unique races like the Soratami/Moonfolk. If a plane so popular it remains a 2 on the Rabiah Scale of likelihood to return (even after the catastrophic failure of BFZ by every metric, just like Kamigawa) can be so utterly ruined by the wrong focus, then judging Kamigawa from decades ago for that reason is absurd. Especially since Kamigawa had the unfortunate handicap of following up Mirrodin, which was so OP it nearly killed MTG as a game.

Even if we play devil's advocate with MaRo's argument that Kamigawa is only popular because of Commander (which is false), it just goes to show that the community's dynamic has changed in the last 15 or so years since Kamigawa debuted, when there was no EDH format. So clearly the data is dated at best.

There is no excuse not to use Kamigawa's physical geography and its unique races as the backbone to make it the Japan World it should have always been and still could be now that the Kami War has resolved and millennia have passed. I see no reason to make "Ninja of New Plane" instead of just revisiting Kamigawa and making such a card "Ninja of Minamo" - if it's designed well, Spike and Johnny with play it regardless of what plane it's from. And because it's Kamigawa, as long as the art and flavor are there, Vorthos will all love it, even more so from being set on Kamigawa done right.

Same with Lovisa. She was also forty-something when she played a role in the story, and the original art AGAIN nailed it. She had a twenty-something old son, Lothar. The original art is a strong, middle-aged woman both regal and barbaric. Not a flirtatious young blonde.

Lovisa's art is downright disappointment, Jhoira is an improvement, but still far from ideal.
I think Lovisa's new art and flavor text are meant to show her during her younger days. Less Coldsnap, and more Ice Age. Just a theory.

That was my thought as well.

All of this new-art Kamigawa stuff is making me mighty suspicious in my mind.

It probably doesn't mean anything, yet someone clearly went to some effort updating the Kamigawa style guide.
It is possible they intend to release a "Planeshift: Kamigawa" like they have done with Zendikar, Innistrad, and Kaladesh.

Either way, since a more modern Kamigawa appeared in Commander, and WotC have learned through MaRo's tumbler that the setting of Kamigawa is decently popular (but not the sets), they've updated it so they can use it more in auxiliary products. I am fairly certain they have no plans on using it for a standard legal set currently.
But Personally I've always been of the opinion that if the flavor of a world is good, then it should be given a second chance, if not in a standard legal set, then in an auxiliary product where they can push the power level without breaking standard.
Agreed entirely. I really feel we should get a set like Conspiracy set on Kamigawa. Or get more Kamigawa cards in Commander products. But I do feel a full non-Standard set is the way to go.

That's funny, because it looks very Kamigawa to me. Indeed, the waterfall in question is all over Kamigawa art, most noticeably on every one of the Kamigawa islands and the art of Keiga, the Tide Star.
It doesn't look like the Kamitaki falls to me. Jhoira looks off as well, older and darker? IDK.

I wish it was two separate cards, and the former tutored for the latter. Beautiful art and concept wasted on a horrible appearing card. I hate split and DFC.

Two seperate cards might look better, but it would take up twice the number of card slots. Look how few meld pairs we got. It would be like that. This way we can get a couple cycles to fit in the set, potentially.

I'm sure that these would look better as normal cards, but design-wise this is much more elegant. Same goes for other split cards as well as DFCs. You sacrifice some aesthetic appeal for the sake of gameplay. That's nothing new.

I, for one, am glad to see them taking some risks in their design. Compared to the two blocks before it with colorless mana costs and meld, Kaladesh was pretty conservative. This could be pretty interesting for Amonkhet, I think.
As a Vorthos, aesthetic makes or breaks things for me. I feel like part of choosing to play MTG is for the art and aesthetic, otherwise we'd play Poker or something. So gameplay outright not co-existing with appearance feels pretty awful to me. The look is very awkward, and as a new player if I saw a card like this, I'd avoid it just to avoid having to understand what is going on. If I didn't assume it was a misprint.

    I suspect it'll be:

    Amonkhet
Ravnica (regrettably) - where the Gatewatch regroups after losing miserably to Bolas
Atlazan - Whatever this is - Jace and possibly Lilliana pursue Vraska here, flesh out their story, emphasis on flesh
Theros - enter Ajani who discovers their loss, together they help Elspeth and Daxos, Gideon and Nissa probably the main focus out of the 5 main GW members

I'd really love to skip right to Theros of course. I'm interested to see how the GW interacts with Theros as a plane, especially its gods. Nissa will likely take a shine to Nylea and admire the influence she has on the Green mana and leylines there, for example. And we all know Gideon's history. Jace vs. Ashiok is a must, and Ajani's ties to Elspeth, Daxos and even Xenagos are intriguing.

It's really best to not think about it because it's absolutely immersion shattering how small feeling worlds are.
Which I find rather sad. I don't understand how an entire world could be so limited and contained. It doesn't feel authentic. Call them distant unexplored lands. Leave it up to the imagination what may lie beyond. But outright limiting a plane's boundaries seems awfully stifling.

Original Zendikar had a homogeneous theme yet still managed to feel vast and diverse. The return felt small and made entire continents feel tiny. IDK what it is about how worlds are being handled lately but I got a massive feel from original Zendikar, like it was a large plane as Dominaria was, but with more of a focus on theme.

Sounds like you only play White cards anyway, so why the concern?

Registered to say that for a website that warns people for posting all sorts of stuff almost instantly, the length of time this racist garbage has been left up is pretty disappointing, although not entirely surprising.

As far as the reprint goes, I do like the new art a lot, although the old art is so etched in my mind from years of play that it's a big adjustment. Anything that lowers the price on this card is much appreciated. This set continues to deliver!
sounds like you're the one who needs a warning. Especially for hostility and your own racism. How is my post racist when innistrad is Gothic Germany world? The original looks off theme with dragon statues and the appearance of the guy. I comment on art all the time it's called being a vorthos

I was just getting ready to say these gods could be comparable to Avacyn in that they're sufficient plane protectors that are quite powerful. They are also, from what we know so far "artificial" in the same sense that Amonkhet is artificial by being created from a PW rather than naturally spawning (presumably from raw mana and materials as planes do in the Miltiverse?). Theros gods are natural formations within the metaphysics of Theros, and actually govern its natural elements. These gods could be gods, but more akin to powerful legends (like Avacyn) styled as gods, rather than being actual divinities which govern nature the way Theros gods do. That's why I expect these gods to be unique and have certain functions, traits and followers, but not actually have domains like sun or sea.

Amonkhet has two suns, for example, and I doubt two of its five gods are sun gods.

I could see her returning the same way black mana coalesces back into Demons on Innistrad. She was ultimately a super collection of white mana after all. This hasn't been shown to occur with Angels on Innistrad, but an event gave birth to Sigarda and her sisters, so who knows. Perhaps when Sorin siphoned the white mana necessary to create Avacyn into Innistrad, dissolving Avacyn never cause it to exactly leave? Bringing her back would have to be a pretty roundabout way of doing it, because as others have stated, she was dissolved, her creation spell ended, not killed in a traditional sense.

In Montreal, YGO is dead. My LGS sold all their cards to another LGS because they were just sitting there. But it's mainly the fault of the judges at pro events, they use to steal cards from players and then DQ them because their decks weren't carrying a legal amount of cards. Everyone got pissed, quit YGO and switched to MTG.

One thing YGO will always have above MTG to me, is the foiling. Secret rare, ultimate rare and ghost rare foiling is amazing and would look insane on MTG cards.
Secret Rare in YGO is by far the best (and my favorite) rarity, foiling and card appearance of any game. I have an Ice Barrier (casual) and Nekroz deck and the secrets are just. Those icy blue schemes with the sweeping veil of the secret rarity. It's like icy diamonds. I hate ultimate and Ghost is pretty neat but discontinued I believe? A lot of foiling in YGO can be gaudy though, like those horrendous Silver foils and Gold rares look awful.

To be fair YGO's artwork is rather simple to it relies more on foiling. MTG's art is so intricate that I prefer it non-foil to appreciate it.

Yep. Sounds like something YGO players would do btw. I'm telling you if it isn't Konami that's out to get that game, it's the players even more so. Still, I do admire its potential and the archetype decks I have in it. When I play it with friends I enjoy it very much. My issue is the pacing and lack of a casual environment.

I would not be surprised if Yu-Gi-Oh was the highest selling card game. I don't know that it's necessarily a healthy kind of selling though.
I don't think YGO is outselling MTG. I say this as a fan of both (it's Konami's management of YGO, specifically, that I resent). MTG drafts its sets and has many formats. That said, YGO's business model is very myopic (at least until recently, but this improvement could very well be short lived or outright in vain with the way the game design suddenly capsized with Links) so it isn't a healthy kind of selling at all. YGO has been dwindling as far as I can tell, at least in my area. YCS Seattle recently had one of the worst attendance rates ever at ~800 players. Some suspect it's because Seattle was too remote for most YGO players who are East Coast or California. Atlanta is the next YCS so attendance there should gauge the health of the present game better.

Regardless, I don't expect YGO to be outselling MTG, not even in its prime. Certainly not in my area, where 50-100 people show up for pre-releases and 20 on Sundays, where YGO pre-releases average 12-20 at best.

YGO isn't cheaper. Investments in YGO are catastrophic. As someone who played it for 12 years and started getting back into it casually lately (I quit when Trishula was banned, had played since LOB before that), I assure you it's the most tenuous investment. Just the other day the game was turned on its head with this new Link nonsense. You'd commend them for slowing down the power creep and floodgate but anyone with as much experience with Konami as I knows they'll cash cow it soon enough. It's a shame, YGO has potential to be great, and in many ways is until Konami gets absurd again.

MTG is the best CCG out there, but I do agree there is room for improvement.

I mean, you either have a game where cards hold no value like YGO or hold too much like in MTG, I prefer the latter, and I think YGO could take a page out of that book. Lately though, I will admit YGO has shown considerable improvement. MTG is delivering Egypt World so they're always giving players what they want and are invested in our demands, so I don't feel MTG is worthy of complaint ATM.

Can I go slightly off-topic for a moment? I've always wondered, does the design and structure of YGH allow for oddball formats like commander, pauper, mini-masters, etc?
Yes and no. YGO has casual decks and the ability to be played as tag duels (similar to 2HG), Deck Master (similar to Commander) and even just casual one on one with some decks being capable, but more dialed back either by design, the ban list or by changing times and trends in play.

The problem with YGO is Konami and the player base have limited it to a very narrow, linear competitive environment that stifles out casual play entirely. Konami shoehorns players into this treadmill format with power creep and the ban list as an insidious form of set rotation (you must buy and play the newest cards to win, or if you hope have more than two turns. At times, you'll lose before you even begin your first turn with some of these new decks). Then the players foster this abuse by being exclusively Spikes and net-decking the top builds from world championships which consist of the absolute newest cards (because Konami) and play those at locals, stifling out anything that isn't the newest, most brutal, tournament winning deck. So everyone ends up playing the same small pool of cards dictated to them by Konami and by championship tournaments. You ask a YGO player to have a casual game, or to even have a game at all (even if you ARE using a competitive deck) that doesn't involve prizes or a tournament, even on a locals level, and they'll decline because if there's no incentive for them to Spike the hell out of you with the nastiest combos Konami's cash cow management of the game allows for, playing just isn't deemed worth it.

Really it's a very malignant game in part because of Konami, but in a larger part because of the player base which caters to that. Recently Konami released some respectably strong, but not power creeped Dark Magician (a fan favorite) support. But do you think you could play that deck at your locals, despite it being a rather strong deck as well as thematic and admired? No. Not because it's awful design or because no one loves Dark Magician (the contrary) - it's because you'll be facing 4-6 rounds of replicas of the world champion's deck composed of Konami's newest power creeped cards before the ban list hits them to inspire those Spikes to buy the next set of the same thing. Good luck having a first turn.

posted a message on What's your opinion on 'The Gatewatch'?
My issue isn't really a Gatewatch issue so much as a Planeswalker issue. I wish their adventures through the Mutliverse had more to do with learning and growing from different worlds. Thats the idea, right? Of so many different planes they can traverse? If only each of them were a unique place of awe and wondrous magic to behold and lessons to uncover. To stop and appreciate an entire world with its own metaphysics and its own diverse magic.

Instead Planeswalkers arrive already masters of everything there, always serve the biggest, best roles and make everyone else seem incapable. If someone is, like Jenrik, they're killed so Jace (who is my favorite PW, mind you) can serve the investigator role instead. Planeswalkers always overshadow the rest of the cast, which I could dismiss if they weren't doing it on someone else's turf every time, having just arrived there? Worlds are literally their playgrounds and they just toy with massive feats such as taking down the Eldrazi or turning Zendikar inside out to do it as if these were simple measures and not astounding acts. It's just a shame to me not to see more exploration and awe for such worlds, or these characters actively searching and learning how to do things they just happen to just do without any real work.

For example, Gideon realizing he was no longer on Theros. Can you imagine being blinked randomly into a desert, only to realize you're in a dune on Saturn's moon Titan which you thought was Arizona for a moment? Would you be blasé about THAT?!

The Gideon art looks like it will be nice. Might want one when I see it up close. Set looks amazing, the flavor on point so far. Really excited for this.

I loved the Partner mechanic, and I would like to see more of it.

But, please, please, don't break my heart again. Give me Serra. I hated Nahiri from the first because she wasn't Serra in the C14 decks. After she did that to Sorin and Innistrad, I felt vindicated.

Oh, and I would love to see the missing Legendary BW angel from Flight Moonsilver...

    Yes, please.
I second the Serra request. And would want her painted by REBECCA GUAY ONLY!

I mean, these are the same faces we're seeing all the time, block after block. That consistency can be nice if they'd switch a few things up about them a little. Instead of oh another Jace card, I'd like to see them be more thematic while in the setting. Oh, that's Jace when he was on AMONKHET. It would be so neat to see that diversity. Even weaving spells related to the setting, like a Lilliana card of her in a white dress and veil featuring mummy zombies or Egyptian tombs with hieroglyphics in the backdrop instead of her standing there in a purple evening gown with a neutral background.

My greatest fear though is that we get Bolas World instead of Egypt World. I don't want the former dominating the flavor the way Eldrazi killed Adventure World. And I hope Amonkhet is really sunny and vibrant, no more of this overcast.

Jace has his adorable twink self buried under that dreadful cloak all the time. Show me some skin. Gideon too. I want them wearing golden Egyptian skirt things, with prominent falcon-themed golden chest ornamentation that branches off into sick shoulder accents, and those lined pharonic headpieces with a cobra in the center that has rubies for eyes OR ELSE

    Also, legs.

    btw Gideon skips leg day

I wish we'd see the Planeswalkers in local garb. Seeing Jace in Egyptian-style clothing would be so awesome. When we visit Theros getting some Gideon toga action too. Tired of all the same outfits. Don't these people need to blend into the plane a little? Get with it.

Most Vorthos don't need a reason to do the latter at this point tbh

    Standard play.

    Barf.

I just want to see Amonkhet's basics. Don't like full art or foils but these basics have to be among the most hyped for me as a fan of Egypt World. Hope it's more Egypt World than Bolas World in the art though, otherwise it's BFZ all over again.

I agree about some stories knocking it out of the park while others fall completely flat.

I really do believe the issue is truly BFZ. Things started off on such an awful foundation that we're all squeamish. SOI/EMN were brilliant, truly. But BFZ is just nauseating. I just can't forgive what was done with Ulamog and Kozilek at all. The scene of Gideon whipping back Ulamog's tendrils demonstrates to me every inconsistency, plot armor and Deus Ex Machina flaw that Creative could have demonstrated all in one sentence. It also reveals just how much advantage and favor Planeswalkers are given for the sake of marketing at the expense of Magic's creative material. When Theros gods and Lovecraftian monstrosity deities older than worlds are humbled for marketing, it makes taking anything seriously or worthwhile about any of these worlds or characters a waste.

I enjoyed Lilliana in Kaladesh though. Especially her facing off against Tezz, although the scene was written poorly. I think all of them there so far has been alright, to have them grow as a team. But Ajani won't be in Amonkhet so there's that. I don't like that he's part of the GW though, I preferred him being a member of Tamiyo's informal story circle only. Both makes the latter lose value as oh, how about we have everyone who is linked to a PW group join the GW? IDK.

We don't Bolas created Amonkhet, I thought that was just speculation by one of the characters. And artificial Planes can be maintained if they're balanced color-wise, but most don't seem to be.

And the gods of Theros aren't only human because of a number of reasons. Besides, the main unifying trait of the Theros gods is and should be the Nyx aspect, not everyone being human. That will make them stand out tons more. You're not going to think Thassa is from Amonkhet just because she's a merfolk.

Edit: Also there is a big issue with saying Amonkhet = animal and Theros = human and using that separate the gods. What about Norse, or Aztec, or any number of other cultures? Are they all going to be animals just to keep Theros unique?
No. I just expect the appearance of the gods to follow closely to the source material. Aztec has its own style. I'd expect its gods to represent those depictions, and when they do look human, to appear racially like the humans of that geographic region. Theros should have, IMO, had an entirely human appearing pantheon whose appearance, like Heliod, was racially Greek. Amonkhet would of course have gods that were human-animal hybrids, leaning more toward the latter. Norse would have Germanic appearing human gods stylized based on their depictions. Not to say I mind how the gods are done, just a thought.

As for Amonkhet, I just wonder if they're doing too much at once. Egypt World, Bolas World, and Lilliana's demon and the Gatewatch arc all at once? Many of us wanted Egypt World and I'm worried it's going to be Bolas, Gatewatch and Lilliana's demon with an Egyptian veneer instead of truly Egypt World.

@Tiro of Meletis: Would it be possible for the mortals to create the concept of a R/G or even W/R/G god that actively cared about mortals and sought to be protective of them from the harm of the other gods? As all Nyxborn are either the manifestations created by the deities, those who ascended like Xenagos or are from the combined consensus of mortals, yes?
It is possible. I think that is what Ajani's mission will ultimately accomplish. Through Elspeth and Daxos's story, Theros will remember love, and a RG god of love will be born. One that will probably create an Elysian Fields compliment to the Underworld, where all those that have been good, been loved and been favored by the gods will go (including the Returned, who Ajani was trying to find a solution to). Daxos's Eidolon will be reunited with his Returned form and he and Elspeth will reside there. I do think Elspeth will be rescued from the Underworld though, leaving Daxos behind to be with his mother in the Theros Elysian fields until she returns and is ready to pass away again.

That's how I see it playing out. Theros has too much of itself tied to the gods to abandon them. Then again, Avacyn. So who knows.

The gods of Theros are literally gods. The elements and mana of Theros itself bend at their will. Their metaphysical interaction with the plane is undeniable. Even the mechanics of the game classify them officially as gods.

Ajani has yet to meet any being labelled or labeling themselves god that: he could not kill ("gods" of Naya; gods of Theros); did not betray him (Marisi, who had been near deified; Heliod, who killed Elspeth out of hubris); or who were not just straight up monsters (Bolas).

I don't blame the guy for looking at any being labelled god and going "Yeah, that's bull."
The Theros pantheon is stabilized with the gods believing in one another. Medomai confirmed this. Ajani can't "kill" the Theros gods. Even Kiora admits to Thassa's divinity. Sure he's turning their followers against them, but given Theros's traditions and the fact it's Greek myth based, I doubt his plan will succeed. It may re-spawn a god of love, but it won't kill any gods. People need to stop applying the Christian concepts of a god being benevolent to villains in MTG or to Greek-inspired entities, who are not benevolent but are essentially divine meddling mages.

Jenrik, I do not know where you got the bolded part. It was explicitly said that without followers and faith, the Theros gods can wither and cease to exist. Ajani cannot kill a Theros god directly, but if he convinced Therans that someone is not worth worshipping, it would effectively "kill" the said god until he or she is remembered and started being worshipped again.

And as said above, they can kill one another (Heliod vs. Purphoros).

I thought that was the point of the unknown R/G god, pre-Xenagos. Whoever they were, they simply ceased to exist, whether because people stopped worshipping them or something else. Unless I'm forgetting that the R/G god never existed in the first place.
Kydele didn't even know the domain of love ever had a god. Which implies whenever the R/G god did exist, it was before the pantheon stabilized with intra-god devotion. Medomai confirms this when he says the change began when the gods started believing in each other. The beauty of all this is that gods got overthrown in Greek mythology before, and the titans were as well. But eventually the pantheon stabilized into the Olympians as the ruling crowd. Point is, the gods are a lot more hardy these days, and frankly, convincing an entire plane to abandon belief in literal embodiments of domains as obvious as the sun and sea themselves with the elements bending at the will of such beings is a long shot. Let's face it, these gods literally manifest physically on Theros and meddle around. You piss one off, a tidal waves crashes into the shore of your polis and ruins civilization for a decade. Theros isn't about to forget its gods.

This issue I'm going to have with these gods is they're likely going to be very animal based which is valid to the source material. So I will never understand why the Theros gods weren't all human like Heliod was in appearance. I understand many characteristic races dream up the gods there, but I still feel the pantheon should have been human-looking for the most part. I do admire it the way it was done regardless, but if these Amonkhet gods all look very animal inspired too, then it's a little awkward differentiating Greek-inspired and Egyptian-inspired.

With Frontier now and Modern before, etc. it's becoming obvious players want their cards lasting long. Even EDH is on the rise every year. Personally I'm over sets being stifled by the need to service Standard. This "too strong for Standard" crap restricting what we can get over time has become stale as hell. Complete the damn Sword cycle and reprint the others. I want to see sets made to deliver cool, powerful cards. Not the obligatory 2/2 flying for 3 and all that. Which I understand is for Draft as well but IDK. I feel like all this attention is paid to standard which no one likes. Why would I spend $22 a pop on Gideon when I can wait for it to rotate, get it at $5 and enjoy it forever in EDH? People are free to love what they want but let's just say I am not surprised standard is falling out of favor in light of better formats where we can actually use cool cards. Problem with Modern for me is that it is the YGO of MTG and we all know how the sane feel about YGO.
