There was an infinite life combo in last year's standard with Boros Reckoner, Azorius Charm, and Boros Charm. Give him lifelink and indestructible with the two charms, redirect whatever damage he takes to himself over and over. All three cards were Standard-playable by themselves, so it was kind of odd that this combo never took off.
It was too clunky, and required you to splash blue in Big Boros, which was a bad deck itself. You would usually be dead before you could live the dream. Aside from that, I did at one point manage to put a gift of orzhova on boros reckoner, and make a billion life with boros charm. Still lost the game to milling out before I could get lethal on my opponent.
I recently encountered a player at a local FNM who had a counterfeit playset of Tarmogoyfs in his deck. He had received these from an online retailer (I don't know which one, nor do I know if it was from ebay). When he received them, he knew they were fakes and was refunded his money for his purchase. He is a long time member of our local community and has played in many events here. On this particular day, he had the fakes in place of his real ones (his real ones were in another deck) and forgot to take them out and replace them with the real cards. He called the judge on himself when he discovered this. Unfortunately, because the FNM had already fired, he was DQ'd from the event, and was reported to the DCI. He was given an opportunity to write a letter to the DCI explaining the situation, but I have not seen him at the shop since.
That is pretty hard to believe. We usually let people just drop out of that FNM if it is a first time offense at my shop. Especially if someone has reported themself, we issue a game loss, let them correct the situation and move on.
Repronts are inevitable if you want to expend the playerbase, especially with Modern. The format was created with the idea of having an eternal format for which WotC could reprint cards without taking down the fu***** reserve list.
The player base can be expanded by creating new expansions in the typical manner. There aren't enough Onslaught fetchlands out there for players who want them? Reprint them in Khans twelve years after the original printings. That's fine. That works. But to just say "oh okay here, we'll make you more fetchlands with a made up expansion symbol on them that isn't actually an expansion.... what kind of person would feel like they have a legitimate Polluted Delta or Wooded Foothills?
Me. Go play yu-gi-oh and tell me how special your LOB 1st Edition foil Monster Reborn is since it was almost immediatly put into a pre-con as a non foil common. And then nearly every pre-con after, until they banned it or something.
It's so hard for me to calm down, I am EXCITED. My friend bought four packs and pulled four mythics, then another friend bought one pack and got a mythic. I bought three packs, and I got three mythics! Then someone else bought two more, others bought one, and I bought the rest in the box. Ten packs, ten mythics! The other people got a mythic in each of their packs too. This is so cool of Wizards to do. I got a goyf, a bob, a bitterblossom, holy ***** dude.
Not really. I spent 200$ on a box because they couldn't refund it after placing the order, got ~107$ in value. ******* comet storm and tezzeret. In my store it has been basically this break down per case.
1 Amazing box 3-5 mythics, good value from mythics and rares, few chases uncommons.
2 Mediocre Boxes 150-200$ Value.
2 Crap boxes 75-149$ Value.
I mean no joke, one guy got opened the box in front of us. Pulled a comet storm, foil comet storm, no other mythics, and only 1 good rare. So at least mine wasn't the worst box. We had a bunch 4 drafts fire at midnight thursday, 12 friday, then 4 saturday, and only 1 today.
Only 1 draft saturday had more value in the box than MSRP. We are ditching the remainder of our boxes on ebay. No one wants to buy them.
Yeah, sadly wizards really messed this up and most of the people who buy the boxes are simply wasting their money and getting nothing good at all. $200 is still way to much for one of these boxes when most people are getting Mediocre or crap boxes. The price needs to go way lower to get most people interested in buying. The cheapest booster box on Ebay right now is $220. I read someone claiming the whole sale price is $143.76. Which is way too high for me to believe. I'd believe $90 and only because of the compete booster pack change. The price needs to keep dropping. If your usual box value is only $150 Let's say I have 3 mythics Vendilion Clique $40, Dark Confidant $40, Mox Opal $30, Then my two good rares are Noble Hierarch $30 and Cryptic Command, $30, That's only $170. That covers 5/24 boosters. Most of the other rares are worthless or have dropped so much because there is not actual demand and no one is buying them. Tarmogoyf is the only card propping this entire set up. Everything outside of Tarmogofy is dropping in price by a lot. Which leads me to believe that outside of this release event, and the grand prix's modern is not as popular as they thought.
The box price probably needs to be $150 to make it worth buying because you have such a high chance of not getting anything. One of my friends did a draft as his shop. Out of the three boxes opened only one of the three boxes was a amazing box. The other two were crap probably around $150 in value. The third box was supported by all of it's foil mythic rares, and foil rares. Foil Dark Confidant, foil Cryptic Command, along with a few other top rares that are not tarmogofy.
I can tell you that that 147$ is not far from what my store pays. I can't tell you the dollar amount because of contract stipulations, but that is pretty dang close. We sell packs for 10$ and Boxes for 220@ and make about 68$ A box (at the 220$ rate) after you consider taxes. We don't add sales tax at the register because it makes it easier for customers to do math in their heads when buying singles.
Konami is so much better at reprinting stuff than WotC it's not even close, in yugioh you can buy 3 of the pre-constructed deck and have something close a tier 1.5 deck for the investment of 45$. Or you can straight up buy a super viable deck for 200, the tier 0 deck are no more than 400$ most of the time, and if you speculate on them you get punished because they will reprint/ban the most expensive/powerful cards of the deck in 1 year time. I don't really like how Konami handles the game itself, but the availability of the cards is that much better than magic that you cant really talk about it
So i would do something similar for modern and have 50$ event decks with all of the really expensive cards as a 1of, so by buying 4 of them you would have a complete deck.
Yu-Gi-Oh also has an extremely volatile and unreliable secondary market because of this. Most stores I know are extremely reluctant to stock singles for Yu-Gi-Oh, because today's $40 card is a common in the next set or banned.
We don't buy yu-gi-oh collections for value for this reason. We have yu-gi-oh. But it is a very small section, and we have to look stuff up every time we make a sale. It sucks and I wish the owner would get out of it. But it makes a small profit.
Now... I think the main problem is their rampant overprinting of really good cards in pre-cons and as commons. It has entirely killed the value for foil versions.
So I think wizards really needs to address this in some way, but bumping rares down to commons is bad, unless the rares are just not that great and you need to fill out a set for draft.
However, the do need address event decks. Even decks should be playable out of the box. Contain 4 ofs, not 2 and 3 ofs. 4 ofs.

I have all the pieces to affinity except three moxes, so I probably finish that I just slowly build a goyf deck since the decks are usually quite expensive even without goyf
Yeah, I would sell one goyf, grab the moxes in that case.
Burn can do turn 3 wins with a god hand. It is more controlling in match ups where you need that. You get access to white sideboard hate, blood moon etc.
Of course there is the problem of the bad matchup with Collected Company decks now. I don't know how well affinity matches up against those. I would hope it is better than burn. Because I am putting together Affinity (Robots) slowly just because I miss the real affinity deck that was once legal in standard.
That is the print version that was in question. I guess it would have been easier to look up the most recent errata.
"At end of turn" was almost universally errata'd to "at the beginning of the end step" a while back. It was done to clarify the meaning because it is a triggered ability occuring at one time.
Yeah that is what I was thinking, But the other judge read the card and got something way different. He started trying to explain layers, and I was just like it isn't that hard in this case. I know what layers are, and how they affect the game state, this doesn't care about them in this instance. It just looks once at the beginning of the endstep, sees an artifact, say okay were good and doesn't trigger.
In my second main phase I tap Blinkmoth Nexus then animate it. Creating an artifact creature man-land.
My friend reasons that glimmervoid will check to see if you control an artifact at the end of the end step. I reason that it only checks to see if you have an artifact at the beginning of the end step. Who is correct?
If you are expecting junk company, would Anger of the gods not be a better sideboard than Volcanic Fallout?
I know there very few 3 toughness creature commonly played in modern. And Volcanic fallout would pump any monastery swiftspears on our board, preventing it from being killed. Maybe this is why we prefer fallout?
Ajanni's Ultimate is so bad. It does nothing to help you win the game. Whooo 100 life. So what. I guess it would work as a win con in a control deck with elixir of immortality. Still not a win con.
