I'll be very disappointed if Leovold is banned because of Teferi's Puzzle Box. While I admit the combo is super oppressive, as someone for whom Leovold is the perfect commander for a very unconventional BUG deck, having to go back to 'turn any game into all vs you' of Tasigur will be very upsetting.

Im assuming all lands that produce 1 or 2 and so forth, will be errated to produce <> or <><>. But that really is not necessary... though that would make cards that require <> mana a bit parasitic.

That's a large errata. The parasitic part is what I'm afraid of, but at this point what I expect.

And even then, why not just have Mirrorpool tap to add 1, rather than <>? It would achieve the same thing.
Don't think we'll truly know the answer until the WotC rules lawyers weigh in, but having it play like colourless Snow mana makes a lot more sense in my mind.

The fact that Mirrorpool doesn't just add 1 is what makes me sad.

From what I can tell based on formatting, Mirrorpool adding <> instead of {1} is just, ah, set mechanic formatting. It's like, Deep-Sea Terror mechanically has Threshold, but the ability isn't keyworded because Threshold isn't in Magic Origins.

This is the opposite of that- a 'keyword/symbol use' specific to this set that won't show up in successive sets, but not showing up doesn't mean anything. Barry's Land taps for colorless, <> as a mana symbol only has any actual meaning in mana costs, not in mana generation. A <> cost can only be paid with colorless, likely, but <> in a generation effect would be like if Boreal Druid tapped for {snow mana symbol}.

The <> being in effects that ADD mana, rather than just costs, is probably similar to the re-ordering of the color symbol order in Khans of Tarkir's wedges- it's there to help players make a visual connection between the mechanics and themes. It's not there because they're reordering the color pie.

I've said it before, but then it was actual baseless speculation.

But with the full list of Origins out I can see a definite progression in graveyard card counting mechanics.

I mean there's Spell Mastery obviously- but there's also a card that cares about a specific number of creatures in your graveyard. We had a number of cards in KTK-FRF-DTK that cared about cards in your greaveyard, to say nothing of Delve.

In general the game has been acclimating players into keeping accurate track of their graveyard, because as in no standard before, it is quite important to do so currently.

And then we have Deep-Sea Terror, a creature with threshold in all but name. A 6/6 for 6 in blue that can't attack unless you have threshold. The ability isn't named threshold, but it's a functional reprint of it- seven cards in your graveyard.

And I can't help but feel this is part of a sort of set of 'training wheels' to acclimate new and old players to graveyard tracking- and that in BFZ or another set in the upcoming standard, we're going to see Threshold show up again.

Oh hey, a creature with threshold. (not in name).

I thought card counting mechanics *cough*spellmastery*cough* were too complex for our precious players so threshold rated an 8 on the storm scale. lol.

I was expecting a pseudo-threshold mechanic at some point. Didn't expect it to be this early though.

While the chandra doc was spoiled in like may, the date on it was january 7th 2015. So it's completely understandable that the first side had a copyright of 2014, especially when you consider that the name of the pdf puts it as an internal design reference document and not an actually printed version of the card.

But of course everybody ignored those details.

Is it possible to give it some basic design rules?

Stuff like 'creatures you control gain rather than lose ____' and 'if designing an enchantment, abilities are persistant' and the like? Basically teaching it some of the context associated with the card rules?

Otherwise I'm very interested in seeing this continue, it's definitely not an application I'd ever thought of for neural networks.

"We decided that since only white and blue has this type of answer that we should nerf the format so that only black and white can deal with problematic generals now because surely that'll increase variety."

Did they like even check to see if this was at all a problem? It sounds very much like it was just a kitchen table sort of thing "hey let's make it so you can't ever get rid of a commander and by the way we're not banning or otherwise restricting the support stuff for the most degenerate of cards"- yeah, great job guys.

Hey Rules Committee. Long time EDH player here. Y'all can go screw yourselves, this change without a corresponding update to problematic commanders is ridiculous. Can't even bounce commanders, are you kidding?

Man, wizards is really going all-out with Manifest. Now where's our Break Open-type card that hits any creature?

Interestingly enough, a Manifested morph can be a face-down non-creature card, Break Open would downright kill it. That is, if you know which one to hit.

Actually they already gave us the ruling on that last week. If a face down non-creature card would be turned up, reveal it, and turn it back face down.

In Avacyn Restored, we got a common Angel (two actually, but that's besides the point) and it was one of the best commons in the set. Here we get a common Dragon and it's probably never leaving a pack until pick 10...

Yeah, Dan W. dominated our limited at my LGS too. Great guy.

Saltblast can't target Teysa, so I don't know why this would be any different. It's still a vampire. Teysa is still white.

  • posted a message on What if? Non-Hybrid Hybrid cards.
I was thinking about it today, but in EDH one of the big points of contention people have had is the idea of hybrid cards and whether or not they should be permitted to standalone as either of their colors. Under the current rules that isn't possible.

But the idea of effects that can fit into either of two colors is a good one, and something I'd like to see revisited. Then it occurred to me just how that might be done: with non-hybrid "Hybrid" cards.

Let's take the venerable Divinity of Pride as an example. In this hypothetical set which is all about abilities that appear in either of two colors, players go to crack open their first pack for prerelease or draft, and find a Divinity of Pride in the rare slot.

BUT instead of being hybrid black/white, it's just black. Monoblack, in fact. How odd.

Meanwhile, another player opens her pack and spots the awesome rare- a Divinity of Pride. Except it's not hybrid black/white... it's just monowhite.

Essentially I'm wondering what impact printing new "Hybrid" cards would be if instead of using hybrid mana/color, they were printed in both of their colors separately. They have the same name, the same text, everything about the card is the same- except for the mana symbols, which reflect which side of the hybrid they're on.

How would this impact the limited environment of such a set, and how would it affect standard/modern/commander, if at all?
