I always go for creatures with haste and then burn spells, even if they are clunky like incendiary flow or weak like shock. Turn 4 we are gonna be outclassed, so we gotta lob burn spells to the dome. Even a fiery temper for 3 mana is better than a Hazoret that gets blocked.

Is the Cartouche and Trial combo worth it?

IDK about the shell yet, but Glorybringer seems like an amazing curve topper.

The problem is it's 5 mana. Most RDW top out at 3.

I actually think Hazoret herself is the best curve topper we could have. I'm thinking about running her as a one of.

How did Kari Zev play? I was hesitant to add her in because of no haste, but that menace might become useful.

I would rather play keldon marauders than harsh mentor with so many fatal pushes in modern at the moment.

Eidolon feels bad on the draw. Harsh mentor feels amazingly bad on the draw, everyone already has their mama fixed by turn 3.

Anyone tried out Harsh Mentor yet?

Yes, and its been bleh. Its either been win more or havent done much. I want to test it more (especially vs tron and affinity which I somehow I havent run into since adding them) but I'm leaning towards cutting it atm.

    Hey everyone,

I am a modern mono red burn player, and was looking to assemble a legacy deck. Luckily, I have most of the pieces, the only thing I need to get are a playset of chain lightning, price of progress, and goblin guides.

What tips and tricks would u recommend to modern burn players? I plan on running basic mountains because that's what I've been running so far in modern. Is sequencing the same?

Yeah, I thought having a flying body would make up for it. In a lot of ways the flying haste was relevant, but it's just too draining to play a three mana spell to have it killed. Maybe if we got a RR 2/1 with flying and haste one day, that might be worth a spot. Maybe if when it dies it does two damage to the controller to balance out.

Just finished FNM, went 1-2, very close matches. Mono Red Burn.

    Some thoughts:

-On Harsh Mentor: Honestly, while most people use fetches, almost everyone has their mana fixed by turn 3. If we do not hit Harsh mentor turn two, it will feel bad. This is a sideboard card at best.

-eidolon is still the best card in the deck.

-I only have one goblin guide. In its place I used 2 keldon marauders and 1 chandra's phoenix. Keldon is really a good substitute for flex spots, he hit hard and even if he was path'd, he still got in two damage for 2. The phoenix was nice, but it was a path target and at 3 mana, it was wayyy too slow. The Pheonix would only hit once before getting removed.

-I still think 1 Grim Lavamancer is the right call.

-Spark elemental is still worth the spot as a 4 of. The only time he did not do 3 damage was when I was staring down a 4/4 death's shadow, and a regular lava spike wasn't going to work.

-Always bolt the bird/mana generator (the exception to this maybe being elves). Otherwise, your gonna be staring down a 5/5 trampling hasty eldrazi turn 3

I clicked the video, and it told me that Keldon Marauders was better than harsh mentor about 70% of the time

I am a mono red burn player with 4 flex spots I alternate between spark elemental and Keldon marauders, with marauders usually taking home the win. Ive had some time to digest the spoiler and come back with an analytical mind.

I don't like this new Harsh Mentor guy at all. If anything, he is sideboard material. I would rather play Keldon Marauders main deck. This guy feels like a worse ash zealot, and I tried to make my girl ash zealot work.

Ash Zealot is probably better at attacking but in Boros/Naya Burn, we usually stop attacking and early and finish the game with burn spells. Harsh Mentor doesn't have to attack, he just has to sit there. If Harsh Mentor is on the battlefield when your opponent fetches twice during a game, it's already done a great job. Ash Zealot's bolt trigger will never happen as much as Mentor's shock trigger. It's way too narrow.

true, but the same could be argued for marauders, the just sitting there argument. If the "dies to removal" argument is still one that people are making, marauders is better as well.

Mentor is really good for people who don't have a plan to deal with it. If that is the case, we should already be doing well with our eidolons, gobby guides, and swifty.

Im not saying Mentor is bad, its a good card, but for burn, there are better to have in the flex slots. Chandra's Phoenix is a good card, but we are not playing it in burn.

Anyone interested in trying Hazoret the Fervent as a one of in burn? Its repeatable damage, hasty indestructible 5 damage threat. I know 4 mana is not where we wanna be, but it seems like a good choice if you keep drawing land late game.

Hey all! So I'm popping in the thread (as a reader for a while) to ask a question from a non-burn player currently. Right now Eidelon is stupidly expensive on MTGO (where I play), so do you think the deck can function at a tier 1-ish level without it? I'd love to get some feedback and some alternatives if possible. I just can't drop $125+ on 4 cards right now.

    Cheers!

A great substitute for eidolon is Keldon Marardurs, and essentially it functions like an eidolon "Lite". It does two damage if it is removed by a spell, it has a huge damage potiental if left unchecked. Eidolon is certainly better, cuz Eidolon doesn't even have to attack in to be good, but I play tested Keldon Maraurders while my goblin guides were out of commission and I was thourgouly impressed. Much more so impressed with the Keldons than the hellspearks.

I think he's a sideboard card right now. There is too much removal running around for him to be a mainboard choice. I think that the mainboard creature lineup going forward should be Eidolon of the Great Revel, Goblin Guide, and Monastery Swiftspear. No more, no less.

Agree with the exception of 1 grim lavamancer in mainboard. He has won me games by cobbling damage together.

The fact that Exquisite Firecraft is legacy playable shows that it has the power for modern, it just isn't a good fit because the counter protection is not super relevant right now, 3 CMC, and sorcery speed.

I really want it to be good in Modern as I love the card, but I expect that won't happen unless mono-red becomes a reliable tier-1 option.

By that logic, Lodestone Golem had to be restricted in Vintage,so it clearly has the power to be absolutely broken in Modern. Firecraft is not a powerful card, it just happens to fit better in Legacy (where, as I understand it Burn is not a good deck to start).

now, Price of Progress would be wonderful for us Smile

At least be realistic and wish for chain lightning, what would be more realistic. price of progress would be way to broken in modern

We are not gonna get any of those lol. Chain lightning would be too good.
