Yes, as long as all the other criteria are met. Enchantments that are Auras are indeed targeting.

If a player has Season of the Witch out and casts Festival, during their opponent's upkeep, the opponent's creatures will not be destroyed at the end of turn, correct?
I'm thinking that since Festival prevents creatures from being able to attack technically means that they "could not attack" that turn. Because Season of the Witch is looking for whether they could attack its EOT trigger won't take effect.
    Am I correct in this?

608.2. If the object that’s resolving is an instant spell, a sorcery spell, or an ability, its resolution may involve several steps. The steps described in rules 608.2a and 608.2b are followed first. The steps described in rules 608.2c–k are then followed as appropriate, in no specific order. The steps described in rule 608.2m and 608.2n are followed last.
    [...]
608.2b If the spell or ability specifies targets, it checks whether the targets are still legal. A target that’s no longer in the zone it was in when it was targeted is illegal. Other changes to the game state may cause a target to no longer be legal; for example, its characteristics may have changed or an effect may have changed the text of the spell. If the source of an ability has left the zone it was in, its last known information is used during this process. If all its targets, for every instance of the word “target,” are now illegal, the spell or ability doesn’t resolve. It’s removed from the stack and, if it’s a spell, put into its owner’s graveyard. Otherwise, the spell or ability will resolve normally. Illegal targets, if any, won’t be affected by parts of a resolving spell’s effect for which they’re illegal. Other parts of the effect for which those targets are not illegal may still affect them. If the spell or ability creates any continuous effects that affect game rules (see rule 613.11), those effects don’t apply to illegal targets. If part of the effect requires information about an illegal target, it fails to determine any such information. Any part of the effect that requires that information won’t happen.

    Emphasis added.

Just found this myself, but thank you for doing the legwork. I see where I was not comprehending it correctly.

Could anyone cite the comp rules that would address this?

The 2 damage dealt to Psi Blast's controller is dependent on the spell resolving, which it doesn't do if all of its only target becomes illegal. The spell fizzles.

    Well s*** howdy, thanks.

Was watching a game online and scenario goes as follows: Player A attacks player B with a 2/2, player B casts Psionic Blast targeting the 2/2, in response player A sacrifices the 2/2 to Diamond Valley.
So the rub is, they claimed that since the 2/2 was no longer on the battlefield when Psionic Blast resolved its caster would not take the 2 damage.
I am under the impression that even if the target is no longer there when Psionic Blast resolves, its caster still takes the two damage. The two damage the caster is dealt is not contingent upon the first four damage being dealt. Am I (mostly) correct in this interpretation of things?

Also, super obviously, homeward path. Also super obviously a reference to the Maltese Falcon movie with Humphrey Bogart.

That was my thought about the Falcon.

Sorry, I tried to cancel this post.
My original question was going to be about tapping lands before phasing out during the untap step, which I know cannot happen.

    Thanks much!

Was watching a video about a banding themed EDH deck and the poster got his rules wrong and I wanted to correct him. But before I felt I could correct him I wanted to make sure that I myself was correct.

Let's say I have in play both a Mesa Pegasus and a Hill Giant and my opponent swings in with a Phantom Monster. Can I block it with the Pegasus banded with the Giant or can only the Pegasus block?
I'm leaning towards the latter because I was under the impression that all blocks had to be legal when banding was used defensively.

  • posted a message on When you cast this spell, copy it - and counterspell
You suspicion is correct, when you cast Brass Knuckles two separate spells are put onto the stack. And one instance of a counterspell can only target one of them.
A card like Double Negative would be needed to counter both.

  • posted a message on Naf's Asp Q:
Yes I know it causes life loss and not damage. In Shandalar the trigger it not re-triggering off of itself, it just sticks around until payed for.
    But either way thanks.
I'm assuming that the germane rules text is "during your NEXT draw step", meaning that the delayed trigger only triggers the once, if not payed for.

  • posted a message on Naf's Asp Q:
When playing the old Shandalar game, whenever Nafs Asp deals damage to you it sets up that delayed trigger. In that game if you don't pay the 1 that trigger sticks around perpetually causing life loss until you pay the 1 to end it.
I'm almost certain that IRL using today's rules that's not how Nafs Asp's delayed trigger works, and that it only triggers once during your next draw step if you do not pay the 1.
Is my line of thinking correct, or does that ability stick around until payed for?
