    Hi there,

I am trying to build a Gerrymander deck (commander deck using only cards with the original, pre-8th edition borders) and I'm trying to find the best way to get a filter-able list of only and all the cards that were printed with this border. In Gatherer, the easiest way is to search for all cards not legal in the modern format, but that excludes some cards that are reprints from earlier sets. The other option is to individually add to the search criteria, all sets before 8th edition one at a time, which I also don't want to do (unless there's no other way).

I was wondering if anyone has a link for a search where you can filter by border style, or a search that makes it easy to do what I'm trying to do. Even if I could select multiple sets without having to click the drop down, pick one, wait for it to populate the search, drop down again, find another one, repeat, etc., that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    shimmer

From Gatherer: "Can affect basic or non-basic types, but it must be for a specific type. The chosen type must be an existing land type. See the glossary of the comprehensive rulebook for more details on existing land types."

Looked up land types here: http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Category:Land_types

So, when I play shimmer, can I choose land type: "basic land," giving my deck running only non-basic lands a distinct advantage? Thanks in advance.

Interesting, but i'm not sayin i need my dudes to be unblockable, just that I will almost definitely win if kaalia can get through multiple turns in a row. bedlam and recon enable that.

regarding ob, i can see your points. Not good enough to displace anything on this list for sure, and stranglehold is definitely better.

i see your point on kuro too, makes a lot of sense, i'd run terminus or hallowed burial first in a heartbeat

and yea haha i spaced on necropotence, i've misplayed this card in the manner i described it before as well hahaha.

Man this is a long thread. Thank you for the OP for getting this going.

I was wondering if anyone has tried a few different cards that I was thinking of adding to my kaalia deck. First off ob nixilis, unshackled. As a soft-shutdown against tutors and fetchlands (both of which are really prevalent and powerful in EDH), I think he has potential. I was considering making him a general for this reason, but since I have a kaalia deck, I thought i might try him here. I hesitate because he is control in an aggro deck, which is why im asking if anyone has experience with him. The following two im definitely going to try and I'll let you guys know how they go.

bedlam because I don't remember ever blocking when im playing my kaalia deck, and it makes those "when this fool does combat damage to a player / isn't blocked" cards work 100% of the time, every time (mega-pacifism with blinding angel, which I already run).

Lastly, kuro, pitlord. Another thundermaw hellkite/bedlam, with a bit more flexibility, for the cost of a who-cares amount of life. Oh yea, and he swings for 9 like he's terrible at golf.

Also, I can speak to reconnaissance being a boss in this deck. A very cheap way to make sure kaalia can attack into anything.

On the subject of Necropotence, do people usually just draw to seven, or do they draw more and get rid of things they don't think they need?

It depends how much life you have, how much you much you expect to lose soon, how many cards you have in your deck that interact with the graveyard and how badly you need an answer. Reanimator decks might draw more because they want to discard targets for their animate dead. Another example is when your opponent just played something that you absolutely have to get rid of on your next turn. You draw as many cards as possible in that case without killing yourself, or putting yourself in kill range.

In multiplayer, everything really kind of goes out the window though. If you are in a free-for-all and you play a necropotence, you better be hard to get to, because you will draw much hate. This makes it difficult to gauge the # of cards to draw, because you need lots of answers, but you will probably need lots of life too. I tend not to run necropotence in multiplayer games because i am too afraid to play it unless I am so far ahead that the hate I draw won't be enough to stop me (and at that point, you probably don't need it to win). With that said, if you play with goofs who don't gang up on you for playing it, by all means definitely go for it.

When I play multiplayer it's nearly imposible such a strong effect let happen, because it can be an instant win. So every other player will try hard to destroy such an enchantment/effect. And when you can defend it for one turn, it's so rare. And if an opponent with more creatures has any wits, he will probably sac creatures so he is under condition.

Yea, this is a good point, and while I'm not arguing to try and convince anyone to run a card they don't want to, I still think it might be worth it. I will almost always run something that fits the "too good to let live" mold, doesn't that just make sense? As will most card choices, it comes down to what you expect to face. If you know you are going to run into creature-light decks / heavy wrath / sac engines / bounce galore then I wouldn't play it either. Creature tokens / aggro / creature-reliant decks then it makes a lot of sense.

In this case, 1). You choose when to cast it to maximize the chance it goes off, it's the hardest permanent type to remove, it doesn't need to be around for long. 2). You force your opponents' hands into wraths, creature-sacrifice, etc. 3). Your opponent was going to naturalize your [insert art/ench here that's up to "as good as" DotH], but now it's going to survive because you played defense of the heart -or- it's going to go off and you are going to win (or be much closer to it).

I'm always going to run caged sun in monocolor edh, and just like defense, my opponents are always going to try to kill it ASAP. Again, not trying to argue with you, and I'll stop beating this drum now, but just wanted to give my perspective.

I forgot to mention one card I was thinking of before: clever impersonator. If you find that the double blue isn't too prohibitive, it seems like you'd want this in there. Maybe phyrexian metaporph coming down one turn earlier and being a more reliable hard-cast gives it the edge, but copying any non-land perm and not (necessarily) dying to bane seems like it might outweigh its cons.

I think that Scourge of Fleets is too mana intensive and you don't have so many islands. If you are looking for something that goes over evasion, Ixidron can came handy.

Titania, Protector of Argoth is good with for example Strip Mine, but I think that in this deck it acts more like finisher with Armageddon and/or Cataclysm.

Defense of the Heart is good, but I don't really see it activated in multiplayer. Never comes too that.

I think that regarding the strategy of this deck Twilight Shepherd is better than Cauldron of Souls.

Murkfiend liege and Awakening seems pretty usefull here. But liege doesn't untap lands and Awakening doesn't go well with Bane of Progress.

I hear you on the scourge. After looking at my list and this one, I came to the realization that I just wouldn't have enough islands for this. And now I understand how this deck uses Titania, and that is pretty nice. I don't run mass-LD, so I woudn't run it, but good choice for this deck.

I'm surprised to hear your thoughts on defense. Maybe my playgroups are just not as intense, (this thread is for a competitive deck, so that makes sense), plus we play a lot of team games, but getting an enchantment to stick for one turn cycles doesn't seem that outrageous, nor the prospect of an opponent with 3 or more creatures on the board. I can't say I've tried this card though, maybe it will be a dud.

I agree with both of your points on the other cards, as well as Lavinia. She is moving out of my deck too in favor of some other disruption.

    Thanks for the responses.

Hi there. I was checking out your thread here for suggestions for my own Roon deck. I've been running the same list since early this year and wanted to change it up a little and see if any of the newer cards should go in. Just wanted to mention some cards to see if you or others have played with them. What do you think of scourge of fleets, and Kapsho Kitefins? Scourge seems fairly meta-dependent, but a beating against tokens, most tribal creature decks, dodges shroud/hex and will probably clear a pretty good path for an invasion. The Kitefins seem a bit overcosted, but if your deadeye is out, he is also going to be a headache (and is kind of the yin to the scourge's yang, in as far as the situation they would be used best). I would be equally unsurprised if someone said "they don't do nearly enough for 6 mana" or "the disruption they cause is game-ending."

Could you speak to the effectiveness of titania, protector of argoth when NOT running all the possible fetches? Do you have an idea or estimate on the minimum ratio of graveyard-bound lands (fetches, strip mine + clones, etc.) to total lands you think you would use her with?

Not a new card, but defense of the heart seems great in this (and most creature-based decks). It becomes better in multiplayer since your chances of it hitting increase. plus while it dies to your bane of progress, it should ever only be on the board for one turn cycle.

Another card that might be neat is cauldron of souls. Again, dies to BoP (hahaha, that's pretty funny. I mean Bane, not Birds), but really prevents an opponent from wrathing you and you can blink away the -1 counters which allows you to use it again later if need be. May be a bit too situational, especially in your deck that wants to avoid playing artifacts, but worth a look I think.

Lastly, I know you said your deck is not too reliant on Roon, but since mine is more so, do you or others think making room for aura of dominion would be a good idea, especially considering that I would run it with cards like prophet of kruphix, murkfiend liege, awakening and seedborn muse. SO MANY ROON ACTIVATIONS.

I wish we had a "false sense of entitlement" filter that would hide or delete every post saying something like, "My favorite color/format/playstyle/etc. is this and these spoilers don't cater to me so I'm upset and I want you all to know it." We wouldn't have to scan through 14 pages to find interesting comments or questions about rules/strategy/combos and so on. Oh well, such is internet.

Anyways, does anyone see a clear benefit or other cards that would benefit from the Aerie Worshippers' tokens being creatures and enchantments?

certainly going directly into my Roon of the hidden realm EDH deck!

As for standard, which I am terrible at (so consider these as ideas you'd NOT want to consider), it's a shame there aren't many flash creatures (or to a lesser degree because they won't count towards devotion, token generating instants) to give you max benefit from this guy.

I would try a UWb control. splash black for notion thief and nightveil specter.

Then I'd consider things like curse of the swine (you can even hit yourself if this god is out and you don't have a creature to play), blind obedience, daxos of meletis, detention sphere, lavinia of the tenth, medomai the ageless, realmwright, Thassa, God of the Sea.

Or you can go bant as someone suggested and ramp to a hopeful T3 this god thing we're discussing, T4 prophet of kruphix, but that seems inconsistent at best.

ah, thanks! I misread it then, you're right. But the equipment would fall off in this situation, right?

    Kusari-Gama Sydri, Galvanic Genius

let's say I equip the Kusari-Gama to a B-stick and attack with him. B-stick gets blocked by Chump. Can I then turn the equipment into a creature and give him deathtouch/lifelink with Sydri to wipe out the rest of Chump's controller's destroy-able creatures?

I'm confused, because I assume turning the equipment into a creature makes it un-attach from B-stick, then when the ability checks the "equipped creature's power," it will be 0 because it has fallen off Mr. B-stick. But I think maybe there are some stack tricks that would make this work as a repeatable "let this guy through or face a one-sided DoJ" for 6 mana. whether or not it's worth it is another question... but it would be a neat trick I guess.
