I think harsh mentor could see some play. People have tried WR death and taxes before and this could give them a reason to try again.
It hits a bunch of things but not everything lantern listed as I believe things like mox opal, lotus bloom, chromatic star and the like are mana abilities and don't trigger the mentor
Nobody mentions Ral Zarek. His -2 is a decent removal and unliek ajani he can use it twice, his ulty is insane with nahiri and with his +1 nahiri can exile any creature and even the cards we struggle against like graffedigger's or bridge. Additionaly he has some protection included with the option to untap a land for snare/path/bolt the round he is played.
When I saw Francis Cellona list the first thing that came to my mind was, "why not rather ral"?
The reason he played tamiyo is that he likes putting her in decks. He used to run her in scapeshift when he played that. Also to see if others would run her too if he did well.
While it does die to most forms of removal and doesn't do anything the turn it comes in that has never stopped me from playing something I find interesting.
Tracker with knight of the reliquary seems fun so I took out hanweir militia captain out of the GW humans list I was working on for tracker. Which caused me to cut vials for coco causing thalia to not be as great so she got cut. So I spent some time looking for a new 2 drop human in G/W but the options seemed bad until I remembered confidant is a human and jammed black into the deck. I wouldn't take this to GPLA but I would play it at FNM and GPTs
As long as that doesn't mean fewer GPs, I don't have a problem with it.
I'm afraid that there will also be less GP's since no more PT's means that Wizards will care less about Modern. I don't think we will have less numbers of GP's just yet but I feel like it will happen after some time. This is the only thing I don't like about this Wizards decision being good for Modern otherwise.
Considering how successful and popular modern GP's are I doubt we would get less of them.
Modified the list and this is what I'm going to proxy up once the set comes out(going to wait for relentless price to go down). will try running hedron crab over thought scour too.
I'm wondering if sunscape familiar might be a good inclusion for the ghostly flicker deck. It blocks and sort-of makes mana. Wall of roots style. 0/3 is barely usable though. 1/3 or 0/4 would have been appreciated.
Is there any way to tag users in posts? I know runner is a big fan of ghostly flicker.
It's probably win-more, since if you set up the combo you're probably winning, but it lets you flicker more/keep mana up for other things. Also lets you play archaeomancer + flicker in the same turn for 5 mana, or mnemonic wall/scrivener/izzet chronarch + flicker at 6 mana
There's also nightscape familiar, but i see this deck more often in UW than UB and also I think 0/3 is better than a 1/1 with 2 mana regenerate
I actually prefer the UB version over the UW version and cube Nightscape Familiar. UB gains access to Cavern Harpy which lets you get incremental value while you find the pieces you need. And I find the ETB effects are generally better in the UB version as Bloodhunter Bat and Gray Merchant of Asphodel just kill your opponents, Faceless Butcher gets rid of their field, etc. going esper also gives the deck access to Blind Hunter which also kills them.
Another new zombie we can all agree is unplayable: Stitchwing Skaab. I think we can all agree that four mana or two cards isn't worth a 3/1 flier.
I dunno about that. It's a recursive, evasive zombie that has fairly easy re-cast preconditions. Plus, getting one back let's you rebuy all of your Gravecrawlers and Amalgams, but maybe I've just got too much dredge on my mind.
The circumstances though to make this line of play requires you play it for four. Then it needs to die. Then you have to draw either two dead cards or a pair of amalgams/gravecrawlers, and also not have been killed by turn six. That's low probability on top of wasted resources.
You don't need to hard cast it but it requires a third color to get it into the graveyard along with maybe hedron crab. Green gives you life from the loam, lotleth troll, and grisly salvage. red gives you faithless looting.
As a person that loves tribal strategies and was let down by BFZ block (I loved Zen block allies) O'm really loving this set.
Feels weird pointing this out but... Eldrazi is a tribe, y'know. I wouldnt call them a let down...
I liked pre-OGW eldrazi but hate what it is now as I don't think it should be doing what it is doing and don't like what it did to the format.
well, this means BFZ wasn't a let down for you after all!
Eldrazi and their bull***** aside I was most looking forward to new ally cards the most. some of the BFZ ones are actually not bad but OGW was a ******* travesty due to the *****ty mechanic they gave them. Well at least they are doing a fairly good job with most of innistrad's tribes.
Don't reply to this post with a lecture on Standard/Limited design philosophy and Standard/Limited format/creature context. This is the Modern forum. Let me be unhappy with bad Modern cards.
Not sure why you are complaining as we got Declaration in stone which while not an instant is probably the best white removal in a while.
The following list is what I would play if I had all the cards(missing hierarchs and 1 cavern). not sure why everyone is not considering gavony considering how powerful it is,
