I recently was convinced by my friend down at my LGS to get into EDH, I looked into the two primers for Niv-Mizzet The Firemind and I put together a deck with cards I had and things I could trade for readily. I chose Niv-Mizzet the Firemind because I am a big fan of the flavor of the Izzet League and Niv is a big bad dragon.
I was wondering if any EDH vets could give me some tips in card selection or some EDH playstyle tips in general. I have background in modern and pauper and have been playing for about 4 years so I would like to think I am not a complete rookie.
For the most part people who play edh around me have fairly powerful decks and ill only try to go for the combo kills with niv as a last result. Ill be able to respond quickly and Ill discuss card choices and advice with all of you guys.
Recently I have been working on my sideboard and I am pretty sure I would rather be running Hibernation over Aetherize at the moment. Hibernation is 1 mana cheaper, does not rely on combat, and most of the creature plans I have been seeing lately are of the green variety.
Its pretty solid against abzan company, hatebears, elves, and decks that want to slap you around with goyfs and scoozes.
Against affinity I am already siding in Hurkel's Recall and at 4 mana a lot of the time its too little too late...
A good twin player wont swing all out with their combo pieces so rarely will aetherize be a factor.
Grixis control/delver are very good matchups and I don't find myself needing an aetherize type effect. Repeals and dismembers work just fine...
The main matchup where I see aetherize as significantly better is against Merfolk. But typically my gameplan is to keep them off of Aether Vial and bounce/counter lords until Mindslaver or Plat Angel.
Anyways those are my thoughts on Hibernation vs. Aetherize. What do you guys think? Am I wrong or missing anything? If I am then in what ways?
The toolboxing of tricket mage is probably better than an extra copy of just one effect. It pretty much acts as an extra copy of any of your 0-1 mana artifacts.
Ive played with both gifts and anticipate. Gifts feels like it needs to be designed around a bit more to be especially useful and usually a competent opponent will give you the path of most resistance since they do have the final say. Anticipate is cheaper and in the end you get to choose what you want which is what we want in card selection really.
I have tried 2 anticipates in addition to 4 tfk and I have to say I like it alot. You can represent counter magic and select for your missing tron piece or things you otherwise couldnt search for. It does seem like there is a pretty noticeable split between people here on the forum when it concerns trying new cards. Ugin really seems pretty tailor-made for Utron and anticipate is a baby dig through time.

If anyone is interested as of right now this is my list and I have been having a ton of FNM success with it top 8 in the last 4 with one of them being a win:
Like I said before I feel like this maindeck is really tight and has been running beautifully. If you guys have any matchup questions or want an explanation for any of my card choices let me know I;m on here frequently and will be sure to get back to you guys...
Also, IS anyone interested in me making some videos on cockatrice (dont have the money for mtgo) I have had luck in finding some good players on there and wouldnt mind posting some commentary during games or just play silently or with some tunes. Whatever floats your boat. I test on cockatrice frequently and it wouldn't be any extra effort for me to record while doing so.
Zoo is pretty rough...chalice, dismember, spell snare and aetherize are all pretty good. Im beginning to test hibernation because it will hit alot of things i dont like for 1 mana cheaper than aetherize at instant speed
Alot of times you shouldnt tap out turn 2 for a talisman if you have counters in your hand (if youre worried about a turn 2 play) it is often to wait till turn and pay 2 to drop a talisman and still have remand or condescend for 1 still up. More often than not this is the line I use.
Just my 2 cents but I feel like one of this decks strongest points is how you can have a toolkit of top end threats. Therefore I don't run ugin. Although I do see it working out just fine because we rip through our deck pretty quickly.
So if you like it then run it. Both sides have merits and disadvanages
