Except even in MM some cards were more desirable for their power while others were considered trash and made people upset when they pulled them. I don't know how you think you don't need bad cards in a set.
Even if every single card in a set was Mythic, there would still be powerful Mythics and less powerful Mythics. You HAVE to have bad cards, otherwise you get into the "if everything is good, nothing is" paradox.
The reason for "garbage" cards, and I really wish you'd stop trashing a game you obviously are devoted to, is so the set is balanced and reasonably fair. Without 1 dollar rares, and with much more $10+ rares, the game would not survive due to people leaving because they'd like to eat this month.
I think it should also be noted that wizards does not care about how much a card is going to worth be to the secondary market. They are trying to make cards to help move the game forward and keep it fun and new. What we as customers value the cards at isn't there business once a booster gets opened. They just want to make sure cards are getting played by ALL types of players. That includes casual formats where some of those "Garbage" cards are actually really really good.
Well I'm not sure how you play aggro decks. But I like mine to be fast. haha. And
even if someone does play a creatures to block with. There are plenty of ways to get around that. For 1, swinging with a 3/3 on T2 either trades or runs over anything you are going to be playing. Same with a 4/4 on T3. Oh but wait, On T3 I have the mana open for a Ghor-Clan Rampager so I guess that didn't work for ya. Also, Ordeal says creature or player so I can just bolt them outta my way before you declare blockers. Not to mention that shock I have in hand to hit something on your board for 2 with and kill it.
The only card that is worth worrying about on T2 or 3 that is getting played enough right now is Azorius Charm and even if they play that I can still bolt them with Ordeal if they don't play it till T3.
You literally cannot just build a deck without thinking about your possible plays when doing so. If that's the case then you either aren't good at brewing magic decks or you just copy them all from online.
T1 Land, Experiment One
T2 Draw, Land, Burning-Tree Emissary into Ordeal. Swing with Exp1 for 3.
T3 Draw, Swing with Exp1 and BTE for 6. Bolt with Ordeal for 3.
...Then continue into your second main phase and play that 3rd land. That leaves you left with 3 mana open and 4 cards (5 if on the draw) in hand. And your opponent is at 8 life, assuming they didn't have any of their shocks come in untapped.
This card is crazy good, people. Even though I just ran through the best possible out come. You have to realize that this is just as consistent as Exp1 into BTE and Flinthoof Boar which was a RDW favorite for all of gatecrash. Except that what I described up there is a lot better AND a lot more consistent since the same exact plays can be made with a T1 Rakdos Cackler. Which also makes it easier to play since it gives you leeway if you are stuck with double red or green mana in your opening hand.
I think everyone is completely underrating this cards power in aggro decks.
EDIT And don't get me wrong, I agree with all the people who say that it can get 2 for 1'd. But that is also true for every other Aura out there except something like Rancor. At least on Exp1 you will be able to regenerate. (And assuming enchantments are as big in this block as people say they will be, then getting 2 for 1'd is gonna be a lot more common in standard.)
Sweet, the only question is what should I take out? And another problem I have is that I can't find any Arid Mesas for trade and I don't wanna drop the money on them right now. So what should I use in it's place?
Also, to answer your question from before, I'm planning on running 2 Supreme Verdict and 1 Planar Cleansing in my sideboard. For right now, I think the deck does really well at just locking down the opponent enough to where wrath effects are nor always necessary.
Thanks for the feedback guys! I've been messing around with the list a lot in the past couple of days and I think I might want to add Familiar's Ruse. What do you think?
This is a list I'm testing out right now. It's kind of a mash up between Faeries and UW Midrange. It plays a lot like an Aggro-Control deck. I need some suggestions on what to take out of the main and what to put in still because I'm iffy about all my numbers. And I also need some help putting together a sideboard for the list.
Now this isn't any Tier 1 list that i'm trying to put together. It's just something fun to play at my LGS. I don't expect to go out and win a pro tour or anything. (I'm in the middle of building UWR Midrange for that haha).
Hey all, I just got done reading through this thread and I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers on my list. This is my first modern deck that isn't just RDW of some kind. I've been testing as much as I can but not as much as I would hope to be doing. So I'm not really sure if what have here is right or not. I assume it's not because I have only been winning about 40% of my games...
The idea is to make an Esper deck that acts like Jund Midrange once did with Bloodbraid Elf creating an explosive board advantage. Although unlike Jund's aggro style beat down, Esper offers us more control based actions as we aim to hit that T4 or 5 Rites giving us a 6/6 beater and hopefully a Lilly if not a Jace or Clique depending on the board state. As for utility, Snapcaster is here to abuse the filled graveyard and Confidant is the obvious card advantage. I'm also considering dropping Tidehollow Sculler.
I haven't chosen what I want to use to fill my graveyard yet but I'm assuming it'll just be a few dredgers and some T1 discard power.
So yeah, lemme know what you guys think and please throw me some suggestions. I'm hoping that in these colors I should be able to create enough tempo to slow the game down for myself with cards like Remand and other early counters/removal.
Okay, so I was looking at the Seismic Assault and Life From the Loam deck and I was looking at lists where people splashed white for Knight of the Reliquary. And I was thinking to myself that it may be a viable deck idea to just cut red all together and make a Junk deck that plays from your graveyard. With Scavenging Ooze coming into modern, it could become a very good midrange deck to play with.
The core of the deck would be as follows...
(And before you look at this list, note that I'm not yet willing to drop any money on goyfs but when I am they will be added)
I'm going to have to play with the numbers of all the cards and figure out which ones I want play sets of, But I think it could be the start of a good deck.
Does this seem like something that work well in modern? It doesn't have a hole lot of speed. But I could run the usual B/G/X removal cards to help make the deck roll.
I wanna build a deck abusing the awesomeness of Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant and Snapcaster Mage. And how well they all work together. I'm assuming I'd play it the same way most black modern decks do it with something like Inquisition of Kozilek as a turn one play, Bob on turn two, and Lilly on turn three. But I wanna make use of my graveyard so that's where Snappy comes in obviously. But I was also thinking Deathrite Shaman. The deck is pretty much a bunch of hate which I like. I know everyone is gonna suggest Goyf, but I don't wanna buy a $400 play set.
Soooooooooo, is there any other good win conditions to use in this shell that are just as good as the Goyfster? If there are, please let me know. I'm already planning on spending the money on some of these big staples and I don't wanna add to many more to that list since I'm already in the process of getting fetches for my personal card pool.
Here's my updated list. It still has a ways to go and is missing a lot of cards, but I've looked into cards in most token decks right now and I'm feeling that I may want to lean more into the midrange side of the deck with a lot of removal to give room for my creatures to grow in numbers and size.
So far I've covered hand disruption. I added in deathrite and beckon for graveyard hate. I also get the life gain from deathrite to fix the life loss from shocks and fetches. Also, a friend told me that abrupt decay is a very useful removal spell against most decks so I've mainboarded 2. I'm not sure if that's the right number though.
I guess I should have made it more clear whe I said "GWB Shell", I'm trying to figure out what kinda of deck it would work better in. I figured it would be more aggro or mid range but I'm not quite sure yet.
Okay, so I've been playing around with ideas for Voice of Resurgence and now I'm settled on just throwing it into a basic G/W/B shell. I've looked a few primers and I've got an idea for the most part of what cards I want in the deck but I'd like some input from the community.
Also, this is my first modern deck that I'm making that isn't just a list I took from the internet. My budget isn't huge but I have access to a lot of the cards from a shared pool with my friend. Unfortunately, Tarmogoyf is out of the question. I'm lucky that I can even afford to get 3 Lillys and a play set of Bobs.
The idea is to just make Voice's tokens grow while using hand disruption on my opponent with Lilly. The lingering souls has great synergy with both Voice and Lilly so that was a given. Also, I'm deciding on weather or not I'd rather have Sorin as my 4 drop instead of Elspeth. They both have lots of synergy in this build.
Anyways, please comment I could really use the advice. I'm still new to modern, thanks!
I was talking about Junk as in G/B/W. Although, I was considering splashing blue for Geist of Saint Traft as a strong 3 drop that has decent synergy with the deck.
