My mono w dnt list evolved into a uw fairies dnt list. Less disruptive than the trad mono w list, but a much better clock on the opponent, higher threat density from manlands, and instant speed shennannigans even without vials.
I'm excited. Pod ban means we can free up sideboard slots that used to be dedicated to combat eidolon of rhetoric, and I don't think there was a worse matchup for us than delverburn.
I'll be back to running Jon Finkel's pro tour Valencia list for now.
I've had better luck with grapeshot than empty the warrens vs delver. I'm still trying to work out my sideboard plan, but I think boarding in empty the warrens is a mistake.
Back when I dabbled in scapeshift, the biggest problem I had from jund was Liliana of the Veil. Scapeshift needs to make land drops, so they can't really afford to discard lands to her +1, but discarding spells is horrible, too. Combine that with a clock from goyf or whatever and you have a pretty good matchup vs scapeshift.
Ok, I need a crash course on sideboarding. There's a LGS legacy tournament in a week - it'll be my first time playing legacy - and I'm bringing the beast that is high tide. I researched the last legacy tournament and the top two decklists were both shardless BUG, if that's helpful. How would I sideboard vs specific decks?
"Still had all these": When you win, don't rub it in by showing your opponent all the sick cards you still had in your hand to crush them with. It is just straight up gloating and it is tacky and rude. Stop it.
Also, if it's only the 1st or 2nd game of a match, don't show your opponent any more of your deck than you have to. Like Cranky said, don't show them how many more ways you could've won, and if you lose (especially if you concede), scoop your cards and don't show them any more than they already know. Giving your opponent free information is putting you at a disadvantage. I've had a few matches where I lost game 1 but my opponent still didn't know what deck I was playing, so they couldn't sideboard for game 2.
After the match is over, then whatever. I'll show my opponent how I sideboarded and whatever else they want to see.
Obviously, the 10 Islands in the side aren't real - I've yet to figure out a good sideboard. I'm hoping it'll prove to be quite resilient, but still with the ability to power out an early KCI if need be due to the 4 opals and mind stones and 2 maps. I'm going to try out the Phyrexia's Core as a way to sacrifice Myr Retrievers without KCI and bring back a countered or discarded KCI. Buried Ruins can do the same thing but quicker. I like how they're tutorable via maps.
Making a decklist got me thinking - what if speed is more valuable than resiliency? I wonder if a decklist like this could power out wins through sheer speed:
It has the highest egg density possible, I think, and the ability to drop eggs and KCI fast through the opals and mind stones. The Darksteel Citadels are there to turn on opals, and for KCI fodder when going off. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to playtesting.
I doubt it's bad luck. As someone mentioned above, it might be poor shuffling skills.
However, seeing as you don't really play competitively, there's a very high chance that you're just naturally much better than he is and you just haven't been able to recognize it yet.
Yep, I'm undertaking this project with plenty of humility. I realize I'm in way over my head. (Heh.) I really enjoy playing combo, so I'm looking forward to learning this deck as my first legacy deck.
Turns out I've got 4 fetches available to me, so that's good. One more question while I finish up building the deck: would running a budget alternative like 3 terramorphic expanse for the shuffle effect be better than just running 14 basics and 4 fetches? With FoW being the main protection plan, I could see the impact of having an island CIPT being less important than in other decks.
Also, I'm just curious after reading through some of this thread: what makes high tide better than solidarity? Is it true that one deck is strictly better than the other right now? Is this just a metagame thing?
Hey everyone, I'm new to legacy and looking to build high tide (probably). One question for now: is it possible to play this deck temporarily without fetches? I know it'll make brainstorm much worse, but that seems to be it. Those are the cards that'll be toughest for me to get, so I'm wondering if I can build and play this deck sans fetches at an FNM level while I work on finding them. Thanks! I'm sure I'll have many more questions in the future.
(Well, I have 2 blue fetches, but I figure that's not enough to optimize the deck.)
Thanks everyone for the replies! I really like everyone's suggestion to run a synergies deck rather than combo. That's more of what I like doing, anyway. I also like the idea of going tutorless and mono-colored. That should get the creative juices flowing; plus, I wont' ever have to shuffle my library after the game starts, which is a pain. I think I'll stick to mono-blue or mono-white... now, to choose a general! I'll have to take a look at what's available.
