Have you considered just buying one of the dual deck packs? It comes with 2 complete decks that are pretty evenly matched for like $20-$30. I know my local Walmart carries them.

I don't remember my first PW that I opened but I do recall a very funny story. This is 100% entirely true:

Me and a friend had just started playing magic and decided to go to Walmart and buy some cards to screw around with. We each bought like $50 worth (deck builder kit, fat pack, and a few loose packs). Went back to his place and started to open everything. He opens a Jace, the mind sculptor and both of us were like "what in the hell is that?" neither of us had ever seen A PW having only played magic on the Xbox. We built some decks and I threw it in mine. Opening hand I had it and turn 4 played it....I was like okay now what? I thought his abilities cost mana so next turn I played them like that LOL:tongue:. Couple months go by and I started playing FNM and found out that that weird looking card that we tossed in a box was actually a disguised $100 bill lol. I called him up and offered him $40 for it and he like okay! LOL humble beginnings....

Hi I am looking to play modern but not competively. I am considering building jund from 2010 standard just to mess around with. Do people play modern casually or would I be building this deck for nothing??

Sounds like fun, I am looking to build something like this http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=474444

It says at the bottom that its a $94 deck, but that may be the price in paper not MTGO which seems to be cheaper. I'm just looking to have some fun on friday/sat nights.

So I am completely sold on this format after reading about it, so I have a few questions. Obviously commander isn't as competitive as standard or legacy, could I get away with a fairly cheap deck and still have a good time? I am really interested in either a Naya or Bant deck, and would be looking to spend about $80-$100. Is that in the ballpark of a fun deck? Also I am not looking to build and design my own, could someone point in me the right direction of a decklist? Also, generally how long does a commander game last? Thanks for any replies!!

Thanks for the advice, I think I will just go with centaur healer. I am not considering any other colors, as I want to play bant. I think naya would be fun but its just waaaayy too expensive. I am now thinking about doing the bant enchant deck as it seems a bit cheaper. College just has me so busy lately that I don't know when I would have time to enjoy this investment : /

Hello guys I am building a Bant Mid range deck and dont quite have the funds avaiable for a playset of sphinx's revelation. With that being said is there a poor man's SR alternative that I could use for a couple weeks till I buy a set?

thank you for all of the replies/ideas. I should have mentioned that this is for MTGO, not sure if that makes a difference on the price or not. I am reading on MTGO-stats that Bant decks range from $200-$300. Maybe online prices are cheaper for the mana base? Also, how many standard decks do you guys have? i am afraid I will get bored with just playing one deck.

You are guys misreading my post. What I mean is I am looking to initially invest $100 into a deck, with the intention of building upon it (IE:$50 every other week) to build it into a T1 deck....think of it like "financing" a T1 deck rather than plopping down $300 at one time. I am very interested in playing a Bant beatdown deck, is there anything viable right now? I just enjoy playing Bant colors together.

Hey guys, returning MTG player coming back after about 1 year out of the meta. I understand Gatecrash comes out next month and I am wondering where to even begin with this meta in standard. I am looking to build a deck with an initial investment of $100, and build it up over about another month into a serious competitive deck. Now I understand no one can predict what the meta will be like after GC, but can anyone tell me which decks will still be relative to the meta? My other question is, should I just save my $$ and see what comes out of GC and just build next month? My favorite type of deck is a mid range aggro with a bit of control tied in (IE: Bant from 2011 with vengevines, birds of paradise, and counter spells). Is there anything currently like that people are playing? It is slightly overwhelming being out of the standard loop for a bit over a year and trying to re-enter :o. thanks in advance for any help!!

  • posted a message on Intro/Returning player seeking advice
Hello all I am a returning MTG player. I have been out of the game for about a year and I am looking to come back. I used to play paper but I am now considering MTGO. I like the social aspect of paper but the closest store from me is 45 min drive. Also I would only get to play once a week. Now I have been checking out the standard meta game and I have decided that I want to build a bant deck. The initial invesment for magic sucks. I know that bant will set me back about $250. So I have a few questions and I need some advice.

    1) Could someone post a "budget" bant deck list that I wont get destroyed with? Looking to make an initial investment of $100.

    2) is a budget deck with the intent to build it up over time a good approach to getting back into the game?

    3) how many standard decks do most ppl have so as not to get bored? Note: I plan to also play pauper as well as the occasional draft/seal event.

    4) when I played paper I was always interested in playing a large event, does mtgo have any of these?

    5) are there any organized play groups out there to get involved with? If so how would I find them?

    6) if I decide to quit how easy is it to liquidate and "cash out".

    7) lastly, why invest in mtgo and not just play cockatrice for free?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post I apologize that it is so lengthy.
