Well, I take participation mostly as a net negative, so you could say that the all-male Magic community gets a raw deal. I heard it said about Poker once - It's terrible for bad players, because they lose money. It's terrible for middle of the road players, because they didn't win any money. And it's terrible for the good players, because they could've done much more with the same talents. Best to stay away, so it certainly can't be considered a privilege. Magic could welcome women in all sorts of ways, only to have them refuse, and then exercise an abundance of options to promptly do just about anything else that gets more social clout. The unmate'able Omega males having a sanctuary doesn't indicate privilege.
Also Kittens, I don't support a read of "gender issues" as "women's issues". As far as I remember, I think that there are (at least) two genders. Maybe it was a rant of mine on these boards that something like 20% of the men were having 70% of the sex partners. That is a pretty serious gender issue for males outside of that 20%, and to my eye, that segment seems overrepresented within Magic and the outer geek'dom. It's just totally outside of our cultural norms to grandstand for a behavior change by anyone other than the "in" class. Female behavior is not questioned.
So I guess I'm asking, how about you ladies play more Magic? The community of non-athletic, mostly underemployed males would consider it a privilege.
