    GP Beijing:

As expected Boros decks are out in force because of Esper, and obviously many would bring out their Mono Blacks and Orzhovs to exploit the situation. Surprised that only a handful brought UW. And Yuuya Watanabe, is the best Asian player EVER. Period.

Did the UB Heroic deck includes Artisan of Forms? Because I've been playing my own version of UB heroic for quite some time and it is like the best card in the deck. Sorry, I can't seem to find the deck build on the mothership.

Edit: NVM. I just saw Svolnir's link.

For me it's a No. The best BW decks are still Black Control builds that wants to play Baron and Elspeth. I don't now much about BR Midrange and Devotion, but the decks I'm seeing from that color combo are very fast aggro decks with Exava and Morgis as bombs. They can both have the same cards but they have completely different methods of winning. Maybe it's possible for BW/r that is leaning on control or a BR/w that is leaning on aggro, but I don't think the three colors would mesh well together for now (maybe when the third set arrives). Kudos to the guy who can make it happen.

Tried Mono B aggro build before, but after some games, I figure that Thoughtseize doesn't fit in aggressive strategies. I'll remove it from your build if I were you. This might seem contradictory because Thoughtseize is like the present meta Thragtusk, but the loss of life is detrimental to aggro and its biggest flaw is it doesn't remove permanents.

Since you are thinking of splashing red, you might want to consider Boros. Even though the combo already won some high profile tourneys, it is still underrated. Aside from being fast, it also has ways of dealing with UW and Esper's ace cards.

Spirit of the Labyrinth, Hero of Iroas, and Akroan Skyguard. Those three weenies can be bad@$$ if built properly.

  • posted a message on What's the future of Dominaria? (a speculation of where the story can go)
Lately, I've been rereading stories that took place in Dominaria. And the more I revisit the plain, the more thoughts of: "How To Destroy a Good Lore" comes to my mind. I honestly think that they should just be done with Dominaria, ease it's suffering, and destroy it with one cataclysmic explosion and relegate Ravnica as the center of the multiverse.

The Spider-man analogy is not applicable here. First of all, that character is a cultural icon and is well-known by 80% of the world's population. They can make a Spider-man movie and expect it to be a box office success on whatever year/generation/era it comes out, that's how established the character is. I think the best way to analyze/tackle the arguments stated -before this post- is to understand this:

The 3 most important reasons movie companies make movies:

    1. Money
    2. Cash
    3. Dollars/Euros/and other Money Signs

They don't care about our precious history or any stuff occurring in our beloved multiverse. They just want to see if they can milk it for something. It is harsh but it is the truth

    So having said that:

Point 1: Having a base audience is still a very important factor in making films. I think they'll try to figure out which is more popular to the current fan base. New walkers would beat old walkers any time of the day in terms of popularity. There's a possibility that they might not use a planeswalker at all, but I doubt that ever happen because Planeswalkers are the centerpiece of our lore.

Point 2: I don't think that they'll go all out and present us an epic MTG trilogy without establishing any identity in the movies first. It is more likely that they'll play it safe and do a very simple movie that is related to MTG -just like what the Blade movies did for Marvel- and decide from there.

Final thoughts: I don't think MTG is that popular enough and any extravagant/fantastic ideas (especially by us the core fans) should be watered-down a little bit for now so that we won't be disappointed if the movie ever comes out.

  • posted a message on Where is the love for red?
Every year there's a thread like this one and it's usually from guys biased towards red. That's why my post-count never reaches 200 because of the same old non-sense.

Also, if there's a color that deserves this thread -right now- it should be the color present on all top 1 t2 decks for the past 3-4 years then having it's relevance plunging down upon Theros' arrival. White mages? Where are you?

Life is like a wheel. Now it is black's time to shine, so I am adapting and is currently a black mage. You should do the same and you will feel a little bit heartbroken.

Simplicity is the best way to go and not the direction most hardcore fans wanted to. A based-on-something movie will always be bad if only the hardcore fans would be able to comprehend it and not the average movie-goers (on which the success of the film hangs on).

No Urza storylines, those are way too hardcore, stretched out, and the characters are uber-powered. Might as well make a movie about Greek Gods warring with one another using humans as front-line soldiers and more people would understand and relate to it than Urza fighting his brother over artifacts.

I love this card just because it looks fun, I know I'll build a lot of fun decks with this guy as the centerpiece.

  • posted a message on Is UW control even a good deck?
Since almost everything I want to say has been covered. I'll just give some of my observations:

What I've noticed is how UW can hate on the top tier builds. It is not the good ole UW that has answers for everything, but if a current UW player meets the right opponent for his build then it'll be a slaughter. I'll even go far as saying that one card is what the deck needs to turn this into a Blue White era again.

Currently playing Orzhov and Mono B, but if I'm using the latter I wouldn't want to run into a UW player (I know many people will argue with this) but based on my experience, UW just trashes the deck. Orzhov is a different story though.

I know it has been reported that an X-Men writer will man the helm of writing but I've also read somewhere that a writer that uses a generic name will do it, so I don't have high hopes for it now.

But if it does push into production, I do wish that this doesn't follow the route of the young adult novel movies -aside from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Harry Potter Series- the rest sucks.

And if they turn it into a family oriented movie where this kid discovers that he is a descendant of wizards and can summon monsters out of these magical cards (which the kid must go on an adventure and try to collect) by calling upon the powers of the hidden spirits in the forests, mountains, plains, etc. It won't work and would kill MTG's movie franchise immediately before it even began. On second thought maybe this will work but I just prefer the more mature stuff.

Anyway, having said all that; I'd say Innistrad is the best MTG storyline right now -that can be converted into a movie- and I do believe it will not suck because it's not too weird like Ravnica (audiences asking "why is it it like that?" is always a bad thing in movies), it's not apocalyptic like Dominaria, it is horror which is a very recognizable genre, and it has a happy ending which will convince people to see the next one. I just hope that if it does goes into filming and unto the scheduling of a release date, it will not coincide with the planned reboot of Van Helsing and Universal's idea to mash all their copyright monster into an Avengers-like universe movie. There will be huge competition.

Another that comes to mind is the Thran storyline, very simple setting (if compared to the other worlds in the MTG multiverse), it is dark and fantasy-ish enough and it will not give the impression that it is a LOTR rip-off.

I think many will wait for the release of World of Warcraft the movie on 2015 or 2016 and see whether sword and sorcery movies will still be a thing on a post LOTR/Hobbit world

Final thoughts: If this ever pushed through Guillermo Del Torro is the director that comes to my mind at first, his movie monsters are great.

Also, the planeswalkers IMO that would be interesting to see in the big screen are:

    1. Liliana.
    2. Sorin.
    3. Gideon.
    4. Garruk.
    5. Chandra
    6. Ajani.

    Quote from nasher1984
    Hi,

I know that the white god, Heliod, God of the Sun, is cool but I do not get the point of this god as I do with others. When I compare him to the other gods, his ability seems absolutely worthless because of the cost to produce a token.

It cost 2 Colorless and two whites to produce a pitiful 2/1 token cleric enchantment creature. I've tried to find out on the internet if the token has a bestow ability or something and I found nothing.

Does anybody know why in the world would Wizards of the Coast create a god with such a useless ability that is prohibitive in its cost to create tokens?

Merged into this thread from the Mill. -viper

I'll be careful using the word "useless". 2/1 with vigilance is good for a token and they are clerics too, lots of possible interactions with those.

First things first, every exile cards have their own exile conditions and every abilities goes on the stack.

    1. Obz on GY.
    2. Use Whip return to battlefield effect.
    3. Obz enters the battlefield, your opponent loses 2 life, you gain 2.
    4. Obz survives till end step, his ability triggers,
    5. Whip's trigger goes on the stack.
    6. You decide which effects goes first. If you choose Obz over whip, then it's not the same creature when exiled.
    7. Whip's effect becomes null.
    8. Obz's trigger activates and comes back into play.

It should be the same for Aetherling since you can blink him whenever.
