i always assumed you were aloud to, but most people just passed over it unless someone was like "i have something to do, hold on"
but i kid in where i play started having a conniption when i went to cast hero's downfall on his courser of kruphix after he drew his card just so i could get some info from his deck. but he insisted i did not have priority to do anything.
i tried to explain to him, that during the draw step after you draw a card each player gets priority before the current player is aloud to cast sorcery spells and play lands. but he didnt believe me.
so am i completely wrong in my thinking? and if so, how do people get away vendilion cliqueing during a draw phase?
So me and a couple friends have decided to start trying out competitive magic, and were heading up to the SCG open in baltimore in july.
i was just wondering if there is anything i should know ahead of time, or keep in mind during the time im there.
ive already googled this and i found a couple general things like:
~ Remember your triggers and announce them, once there missed, there missed (minus some exceptions)
~ Dont drop if your doing badly.
~ Bring a Drink and snacks/light lunch.
but is there anything else that first timers should know to make the experience more enjoyable?
so me and a couple people i play with have decided to venture into competitive magic, and were heading up to the SCG open in baltimore in july, and we didnt want to run the normal stuff, so we've been tinkering with idea's.
i tried out r/b aggro, but i didnt like it just cause it seemed to run out of steam quick.
its a fairly consistant turn 5/6 win.
the deck itself im pretty happy with. but i havent really gotten to play against many of the teir 1 decks in the format right now.
it fairs well against control, and mono-black is hit or miss. but beyond that, i have no idea.
at first i had thoughtseize's in the sb, but i took them out cause i felt like i dont need them.
im only running 2 decays, cause alot of times they seem like dead cards.
originally i had Underworld Connections, but i dropped them for read the bones cause i didnt want to be strained on mana.
i have a decent late game, unless im against control, but then again, i think thats fair to say for most decks.
the sideboard needs some work, the gray merchants are there just a consession to burn, i want to replace them with something but im not sure what just cause 5 mana is a bit of a stretch.
it works pretty ok, im usually getting a 4/5 turn win if my deck likes me.
i went with a 3/3 split on the cyclops and chimera, i found myself relying to much on hidden strings for the cyclops to get thru, and sylvan caryatid just shuts me down, so i went for some chimera's for a bit of evasion.
i've been thinking about dropping the temples for Mana Confluence, its a bit dis-heartening when i have a kill in hand, and all i need is a land, then i draw a temple. but im still on the fence.
the sideboard is a bit eh, it still needs work.
but, thoughts, idea's, critique and all that type of stuff is welcome
Does he reduce X costs? like, syncopate for 2 by tapping 2 mana?
#3
Priority.
ive gotten into the habit of anouncing when entering my combat phase, now when i enter it and start to declare my attackers, can my opponent play Sudden Storm or something and tap down my creatures? or is it to late for him to do that?
i understand where your coming from with the one ofs, but it works out well for me.
the primordial's cost isnt that big of an issue to me and he is really good depending on what my opponent has out in play, hes just a more expensive acidic slime. kind of. i would never go more than 2 of in the 75, but one in the md works for the most part. Ruric Thar is good against alot of decks other than control, around where i live atleast. Plus, i only have 4 cards that could hurt me if played after him.
As for Xenagod, hes more than just a giant growth to me, theres been a few games were i targeted a Voyager to give him the haste and held him back to boost what ever i attacked with (Nylea/Boon/abilities/etc)
the only cards im really considering dropping from the main right now are the Mistcutters and the Slaughterhorn, but im not sure what to run in its place, Polukranos is up there, im just not a big fan of running 3+ of a legendary creature.
but yeah, short story.
i know the deck looks like a mess, but it works out really well, like 60% of the time.
im not sure why i didnt even think of the rampager, but hes in there and does some work haha.
i bumped hero's bane up to 2, cause hes amazing, like 95% of the time. had him up to a 150k/150k the one game.
i added one more land, i know the count is still low, but it works perfectly fine, i rarely ever want to see more than 5 lands, unless there nykthos.
dropped the Garruk's horde, cause as nice as he was, by the time i saw him, he was just a win more card, so i threw a Slaughterhorn in his place for the time being. im thinking of adding another stormbreath or Xenagod if i pull one.
sideboard is still bleh.
i dropped the 2 Boon Satyr's for Polis Crushers, my meta is starting to see more and more u/w/x control, so his pro enchantments is actually usefull, also when he becomes monstrous its very vry helpful.
i added plummets for archangels, and other anoying flying critters.
im not sure how i feel about the tactics, it seems good, but i havent drawn into it yet, so im not sure how well it works.
i took out the mortars cause the triple red was a bit iffy to get, and anger was dropped just cause i like my mana dorks.
im looking for a way to make it more consistent, when it works, its hard for the opponent for my opponent to catch up with my board state, but then again it only works if i get the right cards.
i know i have alot of fun-ofs, but there fun.
the goblin went in over a hammer, just cause its another body and i could never really use the hammers second ability.
Garruk's Horde is really really nice, i can get alot of sudo card draw if my deck likes me.
i forgot about zealots haha, ill def try to get them in there.
and im not all for the r/w burn, i like mono-colored decks.
but, ive done some play testing.
played best of 5 with some buddys.
Mono-black:
No problem against it, i won 4 out of 5 games against it, gary's dont do a whole lot, most ive got hit for was 4.
Mono-blue:
Won 2 out 5. i have some problems here, mainly a guy named "Master of Waves", so i need to find a way to deal with him.
G/x Devotion:
Won 3 out 5, its just about what they draw and if i can out race there ramp.
Control:
U/W: i won 4 out of 5.
Esper: 3 out of 5.
control isnt to bad, my creatures arent that important to me, besides having at least 1 snipe.
esper is a bit difficult, i just sit there holding a skullcrack hoping they dont have a thoughtseize.
Also, after the playtesting.
i dont think mizzium mortars would be a good add, i rarley ever get over 5 mana out, so i dont know if i want another 1for1 in the deck.
and im thinking about cutting the Fanatics for BTE's, most of the time he just sat there in my hand, cause i didnt want to tap out for him to do 4 or 5 damage just for the opponent to go crazy with packrats, or rev for alot.
So thats my list ive been tinkering with for the past couple weeks, and its alot of fun to play, its just not very consistent.
It started out as a Rock type list, then i tried making a GU devotion deck, and didnt like it to much, so i tried out black and its been decent.
the sideboard is pretty much just removal
i added the scry lands last night, so i havent had a chance to test them out against another actual deck, and the returns went in cause i can get red now,not sure if i want to up the count on them or not tho.
the 1-of creatures are nice to get, but not necessary, altho i might cut the reaper for another primordial.
I love the Wurm, ive been thinking about upping it to 2, but im not sure on it yet. its hard for people to deal with unless they have a Selesnya Charm or D-Sphere, but if they do, i have Devour Flesh.
I'm still pondering on Abrupt Decay, the meta were i play, there nice about 50% of the time, otherwise its almost a dead draw.
I only have 3 Downfall's atm, so thats why its not a 4-of, putrefy is kind of its filler, but i wouldnt cut them for another downfall.
Thoughtseizes, im on the fence about, i currently have 1, and there not at the top of my list right now to get.
Once i get the funds im going to switch out the duress's for thoughtseize's.
Was originally just G/B, but after some play testing, i wanted more card draw, i tried out read the bones then came across my toils, and had the scry lands, and i actually like them, they've won me a couple games.
i have a really good matchup against control, but aggro just destroys me, but im not sure what to do to help with that.
the nykthos is just a "lets give it a shot", i havent done much testing with it, so im not sure if i like it or not
but i kid in where i play started having a conniption when i went to cast hero's downfall on his courser of kruphix after he drew his card just so i could get some info from his deck. but he insisted i did not have priority to do anything.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
Can you redirect his spell damage to planeswalkers?
i say yes, but my friends say i cant cause it says "that player" but i told them its just said that way cause of his ability.

I have a Xenagos, God of Revels in my hand with 6 devotion on the board, could i use say Garruk, Caller of Beasts -3 to put him into play? or would he be an enchantment?

ive always liked burn in legacy, and wanted to try to bring it to standard, but i know it wont ever be anywhere as near as good.
the sideboard needs help a bit, im going to swap out the angers for mortars once i get some.
i find myself running out of cards alot. but i dont really know what to do for card draw cause the only card draw in red is like, wild guess
im going to add purphoros once i can find some.
