i remember when people said that gideon jura was awful, etc, etc, then... we all now the story.
... it cant be worse than tibalt
gideon will be competitive and will have a place on standard.
I've noticed that a lot of people associate themselves with and get defensive of specific archetypes and even colors - red mages, blue mages, etc. The entire concept is weird but understandable.
I think a lot of people just want to feel like they belong to a group and categorize other people into easily discernible groups. Groups of players can feel like there's an "Us or/vs them" mentality when you label yourself.
No clue what LBS and valarin are talking about in that giant wall of text. Not everything needs to be a research paper, jeez.
Thats why the Guild system on Ravnica its a success no?
Again, the key phrase is highlighted. YOUR experience.
Without meaning any disrespect, YOUR experience doesn't mean a hill of beans as does mine. We have relatively interacted with so few people in this world that what we perceive is meaningless.
Which is why continuing this discussion is just as meaningless.
But... if you reject the experience outside of yours and give them no significance you fall in the relativism of rejecting your very experience. Let´s talk about aggro and control, no? lol
Yes, we're all humans. There are just certain behaviors that are common among most humans. Just because it doesn't apply to you doesn't mean it doesn't apply to others. And certain activities bring out certain personalities.
It's why you see so few women playing Magic compared to the number of men playing the game. This isn't some made up statistic. It's very real. So the question then becomes, why? Why do fewer women play? I don't know the answer to that but the answer is rooted in things that ultimately come back to basic preferences that women have that are different from men.
Why is it that you don't see a lot of older men playing Magic with the younger kids? I know that someday, the day will come when I won't feel comfortable playing with 18 year olds. Right now the day hasn't come, but it will. I can't imagine myself hitting the age of 80 and playing what is essentially designed to be a kid's game. And my gut tells me that a lot of 80 year olds will probably feel the same way.
Why? Again, it comes down to basic things related to human nature. It's why we tend to gravitate towards people our own age. Are there exceptions? Sure. But how many old men do you see hanging out at bars with 21 year olds who are doing nothing more but looking to get smashed and pick up girls?
If you can't recognize that there ARE characteristics particular to certain age groups, genders, races and religions, then you might want to sit down with a psychologist one day and let him or her explain it to you. I don't have the training or the time if I did.
Whether or not you want to believe it, people in general behave in certain ways under certain conditions.
Read Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Maybe that will give you some insight.
I do not like determinism to give an explanation of human nature, trying to clarify a state of nature from a subjective point its not a good answer. I think its about progressing in the game, first you play casual but then you have contact with FNM and you meet other players, new level. it´s a constant need of growing to satisfied yourself.
I had a strange thought. This one is strange and would require some serious card support:
Powerful creatures with severe drawbacks. Say, a 3/3 for 2 with 'At the Beginning of your upkeep, lose 1 life" or something like that. And they keyword:
Traitor (When this spell resolves, you may have it enter the battlefield under an opponents control.)
Then, you have spell support for "permanents that you own but don't control", or some such.
Just a thought.
Something like a Conjured Currency no? Like double agents that work for you in the field of the opponent. Sounds pretty good!
amazing, when a creature attacks you can pay x, the creature transforms into something else in the battlefield or graveyard. I do not think it´s mill: 20 life = 50 life when you mill instead of doing damage.
In the RTR book, Dimir guild members are depicted as one bridge of communication where the idea of Lazav streams in other members to lose the track of the origin. something like that. Maybe we will see a mechanic involving the flavour of telepathic power. Shapeshifting on the other hand, can be an interesting mechanic.
you mean DISTRESS right? but paying unneccesary life
... it cant be worse than tibalt

Of course! But all the mechanics are new, so i dont think so. i would love morph for Dimir, thats the perfect flavour for a undercover guild.
