A friend gave me the idea of painting an image with the whole Weatherlight crew in it. Perhaps I'll make that my next project!
I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. Oh, maybe have them facing off against some of their rogues gallery?
Thank you very much for the compliments! And I will keep that idea in mind. My plan was to make the whole crew looking out to the sky as they sail away in Skyship Weatherlight
Your painting of Jeska is amazing! I ran into it accidentally while googling for images of my favorite oldschool planeswalkers (yes, Jeska's one of them) and I honestly thought I was looking at leaked artwork commissioned for a future Jeska planeswalker card until I read your description. It really is that good.
There are many great pieces of artwork produced by Magic fans on this website and all over the internet but only a handful of them are so good they rival the works of Magic's best illustrators. This piece did it. I salute you, sir!
Are you going to paint more older fan-favorite characters? I'd love to see your take on Serra.
Oh man I'm so honored you think so! Thank you so much for the kind words! I am planning to paint more older characters! Apart from the entire Weatherlight crew, I do plan on painting Serra Angel based on Douglas Schuler's original art. But painting Serra herself seems like a fantastic idea!
Would you be interested in taking a commission on a playmat-ready version of your Teysa?
So sorry for the ultra late reply. I haven't been able to check this thread since! As for your inquiry, I'm not sure if I can take on any commissions right now. Really sorry for that
New artwork! Here's my own personal take on Akroma, Angel of Wrath. I enjoyed working on this piece! If you guys would like to use it for your proxies, feel free to do so!
Please, please, please do an Urza/Mishra piece. I will give you my firstborn son and part of my soul.
Your work is terrific, I'd love to see some old school storyline given some artistic background.
Actually, I am looking for ideas for an old school theme! I grew up in the early days of Magic so the earlier sets mean a lot to me. Thanks for the suggestion!
Been way too busy with work lately. Now I've been able to get some time for myself
Work in Progress. Teysa Karlov.
Been very inspired by Karla Ortiz's rendtition of the character when I first saw it! Her art's one of the main reasons why I can't wait to start playing again!
I was having a hard time trying to come up with a face. Then, I stumbled upon Marc Hom's photo of Sienna Miller.
Your Thalia is well thought out and technically stunning. Superb job. I am not an artist, but I purchase art for my company, and I have a few compositional comments for your consideration.
The right foot (in front) and its angle vis-a-vis the other foot and Thalia's torso and waist: the right foot seems too far turned out. I tried to stand in the same position. I could barely pull it off, and it was almost impossible with my shoulders arched back. The right foot, I think, should be more in line with / parallel with the back foot, at more of a right angle with the chest-to-waist vertical line.
The left arm: the shoulder-to-shoulder horizontal line, which should be roughly perpendicular to the chest-to-wait vertical line, should end with the left arm visible, I think.
Lighting on the face: the primary light source in the picture is the sun rising over the side of the mountain at the rear of the picture. The light appears to be streaming downward, as if the sun were high in the sky, rather than low over the mountain. You've lit Thalia's hair, clothes, and boots with that light source in mind, and her face should be rather dark by comparison. Instead, it is fairly evenly lit. I understand why you don't want to block out her face, so I'd suggest moving the main light source "off image" -- perhaps toward the top of the mountain (which we cannot see) -- so that the light hits Thalia more head on. Additionally, Thalia's face seems almost to hover above her uniform. Her neck should be lit almost as well as her face, only a little darker.
Thank you for sharing your work.
Thank you for taking the time to write all of this! I appreciate it a lot
Regarding the right foot, I personally believe it looks alright as I've tried experimenting with the pose myself. But I'll keep checking and trying out new angles to see if anything would come up. However I do totally agree with you regarding your other points.
For her left arm, I tried the pose and the shoulder would be the visible part. Will be fixing that accordingly.
I'll do a bit more experimenting on the background to get the image's lighting to look right.
The cravat did end up a bit dark. I'll make sure to address that to make her neck more visible.
I must say that i do love the Thalia. I am glad that you made the changes on it because the only complaint i had with her was the fact that she did look as though she was floating over the ground.
As far as the Resto vs. Thrag...man, thraggy is getting land screwed hard!!!
Great job man, keep up the good work so that i can keep looking at it!
Thanks so much I'm glad you like the changes I made! It's all thanks to the people who commented on it
Ahaha yeah I wanted the battlefield to match the expression on their faces
I've gotten around to revising the Resto VS Thrag piece based on the comments of Sioux and Trancebam. Added the shadowing on the Angel's leg and fixed the then awkward table positioning. Also added cards on the table to show that they're in game
Overall, it's really good, especially that sword. Beautiful. The only criticisms I have are on her feet and that piece of white/purple cloth billowing from behind her leg. She sort of looks like she's floating above the piece because there's no grass or brush at all in front of her boots. It would add to the illusion better if you made her look more like she was standing amongst the grass rather than floating on top of a picture. For the piece of cloth, really it could stand to have some more frequent folds at the point where it meets her hip. It would give it more weight, and make it feel a little more like it's there.
Thank you for your input! It's always a good thing for a fresh eye to have a look so I can improve on the piece! I totally see your points. I actually went ahead and did the corrections
Thalia...
Is...
Amazing.
Your work is stunning.
Must make a foil proxy of Thalia for my personal use, don't you mind?
Thank you I'm glad you like it!
Regarding the proxy, no problem!!! By all means go right ahead. In fact, I'd be most honored if you did. But thanks for asking me beforehand I appreciate it
"merkymerx" at deviantart loves the original card so much, that he did a fanart to share with everybody and I thought as a reward he deserved to have a card with his art on it....
I've seen your submission over at deviantart when you commented on my work. You did an amazing job! I really love it! Thank you so much for this it was such a pleasant surprise to see
Your work is simply stunning. Have you worked on fantasy pieces (comissioned) sometime? I mean, being employed for doing so. Personally, I think you should apply somewhere (actually, I feel that your artwork quality is even good enough for applying for WoTC.)
Also, the way you have managed the clothing and the sword's grip is beautiful. I would have loved to see a little more details on the background too, but it's just a detail. I'm pretty sure you could have done it far better if that would have been your intention.
Have you considered to be part of the artwork contests? It would be a pleasure to have you there.
Please, keep these comming!
I thank you very much for your kind words!
I actually am employed at a gaming company that does fantasy themed 2D art for casual social games. It's really my dream to one day work or do contractual work for WoTC! Thank you for telling me that my art is good enough for them I really appreciate it! However I personally believe I need some more practice
The clothes were definitely a challenge! It was especially difficult trying to think up of how the movement of the fluttering pieces would look. I've had lots of reference for each part, mostly being Napoleon's portraits. As for the sword, I cannot take full credit for it haha! I really wanted to somehow incorporate Inigo Montoya's rapier in the piece So what I did was I took one of the movie stills and used it as a base to paint over. It's heavily modified but it's essentially still the photo
It's true what you said about the background. Perhaps next time when I revisit this, I'll add more elements to it.
Would those be the monthly contests? I'd love to try my hand at them when I'm able to! Thanks for letting me know
Akroma with Jaguar legs!
Thalia in a more "historical" outfit.

I left her stomach belts out in honor of Enthralling Victor haha.

Liliana of the Veil is my all time favorite Planeswalker. Because I cannot afford a playset, or even a few copies, I made an artwork of her instead.
This is still a work in progress. Will be coloring this after I make all the necessary corrections
Pose, zombies, and background stock photos are from deviantart. I'll make the full credits once the piece is completed.

Finally got around to finishing my Teysa painting after so long.

Decided to start from there. Focused on the face and roughly blocked out the other parts.
