Right now I am always facing off against Goryo Vengance, Ad Nauseam, and thopter combo as some of the staples in my meta (its a strange store) EDIT: Also scapeshift!. Skred is also popular and other decks as well. The meta shifts pretty regularly so I'm sure at somepoint they will get back around to dredge and infect. Sometimes burn but I'm usually the burn player.
Collected Brutality is in there more as an ultimate weapon against Infect, Burn, etc. It's an absolutely devastating card that sets up a delved creature turn 3. I may shift down to 2 though.
I did change my delve creature layout to 3 Tasigur and 2 Gurmag.
Thanks for the suggestions! I've used some of them and modified my list a little. I think I'm going to still try 5 delve creatures, go ahead and add Vendilion, and go up to a playset of Mana Leak and fatal push for now. Here is my revised list:
With Snap and Tarn in Modern Masters 2017 this is the deck I've decided to build! This is going to be my starting lineup. Please let me know your thoughts. I was thinking of doing a transformative sideboard and sideboarding in Inquisition and Thoughtseize post game 1 if it will help out your game 2.
With those as the face cards and the extra pricing looks like this might be a hard pass. They'd need to do something like have ancestral vision to go along with the suspend.
I think he's a sideboard card right now. There is too much removal running around for him to be a mainboard choice. I think that the mainboard creature lineup going forward should be Eidolon of the Great Revel, Goblin Guide, and Monastery Swiftspear. No more, no less.
Pretty much this. I've placed 2 Shard Volley back in it's spot and haven't complained since.
I don't know anything about an additional run afterwards. If I remember correctly MM1 had only the initial run, MM2 had the larger initial run and that's it. Now they will have a double initial run. My guess would be that is it however there is no initial fear of limited product so I'd you want to buy those chase rares let the price settle in it's second week and get them.
I don't know if this information has been posted yet but from what I gather while my LGS that has insider information and a huge online presense was making purchases, the amount of MM17 product is going to be double the starting amount of Eternal Masters. Instead of making print 1 and then print 2 they are making print 1 and 2 to start with which caused the purchase of a thousand boxes from a number of distributors to be way too easy.
This is causing box prices to be initially sold at around the $180-190 mark because they know they are going to have a ridiculous load of product. My LGS has told me personally that I will not need to worry about a product scarcity and that in turn the level of product availability is going to make what is printed nose dive. He said he would have so much of it I'd literally be sick of buying it before he runs out.
Doubling up on creatures to throw into removal is the wrong answer for a turn 4 deck. With burn right now, more than ever it is important that each card you play effects the board state on the turn you play it. The noteable example will be Rift Bolt which against infect I used to have them hesitate dropping a turn 1 creature (I actually think opening with rift bolt is ok on the play if you dont have goblin guide and monatery swiftspear. It keeps lighting bolt in hand to deal with interacting when the game becomes more intense.)
Lavamancer right now sets you up for a tempo play against you.
Other than that as far as what you keep depends on what you are going up against. In an unknown situation you want to have something on turn 1 always and turn 3 you want to have a 2 drop and a 1 drop if at all possible.
When you know what you are going up against your hand should reflect what you are going to do to interact with your opponent. Do you have removal for infect creatures? Do you have ability to race them if it takes time for their deck to setup? Whatever you have reflects the story of how you are going to play. If you look at your hand and say to yourself "I'm going to lose if..." and it's reasonable to expect the if then it's time to seriously consider a mulligan.
I was fortunate enough to receive my sideboard cards in most of my matchups however my sideboard cards ended up reflecting what I would need and I went ahead and had them in massive quantities. More than ever I feel like Deflecting Palm is a great card for us to seal a game.
Boggles - Deflecting Palm is my all star. Destructive Revelry is my All star. Skullcrack is my all star I had 9 of those in my deck post board
Eggs - Destructive Revelry is my all star. I had 4 of those post board
Infect - Path to Exile is my all star. Deflecting Palm is my all star. I had 3 of those post board
GW Hatebears - Path to Exile is my all star to deal with Kitchen Finks, Thalia, Leonin Arbiter, etc. Skullcrack is my all star. I had 6 post board.
I think more than ever our sideboard shouldnt have things like Lightning Helix and Searing Blaze. Those should be main deck or not in the deck. Its already a part of our general plan. Sideboard needs to change your deck to have big plays against their deck to throw off their consistency and set you up for the win, period. Not win more or inch closer cards.
I got tonight's modern 4-0 for the win. For me personally it was the right call taking out the Grim Lavamancer and putting in the Shard Volley. It even won me the tournament in the end.
Just a quick recap since we all know how burn works and I wasn't playtesting anything new.
Match 1 - Boggles 2-1 WIN
Game 1 I have atarka's command in hand but have a mountain and a sacred foundry as my opening lands and didnt draw a fetch land until my 4 turn. He successfully T1 creature, T2 two Enchantments and T3 Daybreak Coronet so I end up losing to not having the green land.
Game 2 I destructive revelry his first turn enchantment as he enchants with daybreak coronet and proceed to win from there.
Game 3 I successfully deflecting palm his huge creature for the win.
Match 2 - Thopter Eggs 2-0 WIN
Game 1 I land a lot of 1 drops and am able to take the game as he falters for land. The game lasts for awhile though as he pithing needles arid mesa and guess what lands 2 and 3 were.
Game 2 I use Destructive Revelry on his Thopter Foundry for the win.
Match 3 - Infect 2-1 WIN
Game 1 - I get him to 1 life before he is able to infect me all the way.
Game 2 - We play a removal counter war with 2 path to exile cards and finally a lighting bolt. I have to use 3 cards to take care of his infect creature but it ends up being the only one and I take the game.
Game 3 - I play Deflecting Palm after goading him into using his spell pierce on my lightning bolt and I don't add anything to the stack of his protected creature from Blossoming Defense. He further pumps to go for the kill which I redirect for the win.
Match 4 - GW HateBears 2-1 Win
Game 1 - I get him to 1 life before he is able to finish me off. He has a lot of mainboard hate. Thalia, Leonin Arbiter, etc, ghost quarter, etc. I end up drawing too much land to end the game.
Game 2 - I use Monastery Swiftspear with 2 atarka's commands and Boros charm to finish him off when he falters on land draw.
Game 3 - I get him down low. He ghost quarterrenegade rallierghost quarter my lands and in the game I use Skullcrack to negate the lifegain from kitchen finks. Thankfully he didnt have leonin arbiter out so I had my two mountains in my deck. I have nothing left in hand and he has lethal swing on the board. I top draw Shard Volley to do the 2 points of damage that I need. If it hand been a creature or land I would have lost as he had many open blockers. If it had been boros charm or anything else with a red color I would have lost. Thankfully it was shard volley.
I remember shard volley did work for me in other matches as well. I was never sad to see it. In the eggs game I sacrificed arid mesa as it wasn't of use to me otherwise. It was fun playing burn again in a tournament. I forgot how intense the matches were when grinding through turns 1 through 4.
I'm going to make a minor change to my decklist tonight. There is just so much death floating around that grim lavamancer is a wasted slot. I'm going to throw 2 shard volley in it's place because I can't stomach having additional 2 drops. When I put out a grim lavamancer and they respond with a collective brutality on their next turn I'm just wasting my time shuffling up.
I tried Sigarda's Aid and i wasn't really pleased with it. I think I'll just use counters and Silence instead. Leyline is still in their for hand discard. Fragmentize for Eidolon of the Great Revel as well as Stoney Silence, etc.
What do people usually sideboard out? I've mostly been doing the Serum Visions slots.
