It ran siege rhino, abzan charm, chord of calling, collected company and ultimate price. I would also assume four shaman of the pack, four elvish mystic, 4 dywens elite, one rec sage and four rally.
I played against Hayne in the semis. The reason that Wilson and Hayne were on elf rally is because they had two byes, and expected to see hangar back abzan and abzan control at the top tables.
Round one: Seb Denno with Griselbrand reanimator (2-0)
Not much here. He saw no Goryo's vengeance either of our games, and I was able to use dismember to kill his wurm tokens from through the breach in game one. One play that saved my game one was when he had his wurm tokens (he had EOTed through the breach when I had mind slavered him) and I was at 18, I cast dismember, remanded my dismember, and ended up drawing a wurmcoil the turn before I was about to die.
Round two: Roland Matheson with burn (0-2)
This match was very embarrassing. All of my spells seemed way too clunky, and I wasn't able to hit tron early. Eidolon of the Great Revel is probably one of burns best cards against us. Probably I should sideboard two or three Spell Snare. One thing to note is that I don't think dragons claw is very good. It's a narrow sideboard card that plays into their sideboard plan of boarding in destructive revelry. Also, burns main threat is their creatures, something that dragons claw is not very impressive against. After the tournament my friend Markus Thibeau recommended that I main deck spells kite and cut treasure mage and one fabricate.
Round three: Jeff Fung with jund (2-0)
I somehow placed Jeff on twin before the match, as I had seen him playing it before the tournament. I kept a dicey hand with an expedition map, dismember and a talisman. When he opened with an inquisition, I thought I was going to lose. I ended up top decking ugin and wiping him out. Game two I had natural tron with two mindslavers and a wurmcoil, and he mulliganed into a slow hand with no hate.
Round four: Nico Skartvedt with grixis delver (2-1)
These were very interactive games, but wurmcoil + academy ruins was very hard for him to beat. The way that he won game one was by me having a slow hand, casting a wurmcoil when behind, and him kologhans commanding my wurmcoil after I blocked to have exactly lethal. Games two and three I countered or dismembered all of his relevant spells, then pulled ahead by forcing through a wurmcoil with counter spell backup. The delver matchup seems easy because they often only have 2-4 lands on the field, making it tricky to participate in counter wars.
Round five: Brandon Chreptyk with abzan (2-0)
Game one, I resolve an ugin and a mindslaver and he scoops. Game two, I resolve an ugin and he scoops. This matchup seems absurdly easy, as none of abzans removal, apart from path, matches up well against any of our threats.
Round six: ID
Quarter finals: Stephen Barnett with affinity (2-0)
Zero to talk about here; he mulliganed to five and to four with no action either game. Affinity is a terrible matchup though.
Semi finals: Roland Matheson with burn (1-2)
Roland went down to five game one, and I resolved a turn four wurmcoil. Game two he had a destructive revelry for my platinum angel. Game three ended up ending my tournament in a heartbreaking fashion. I am at five life, and I have about twelve mana sources on the field. Roland has two cards in his hand. He tanks for a minute, and considering I am tapped out, I consider myself able to live to the next turn. Roland has an arid mesa, a sacred foundry and two stomping grounds on the field. He pauses, says "sorry for slow rolling" and casts destructive revelry on my dimir signet, tapping both stomping grounds. He then flashes my an Atarka's command, and realizes he has no more stomping grounds in his deck, tanks for a minute, then passes the turn. I had one turn to find an urzas power plant, a platinum angel, a mindslaver, an expedition map or a counter spell. I cast two thirst for knowledges and find nothing.
So, an unfortunate end to my tournament, but hopefully I can win the next pptq next week. Burn and affinity were pretty bad match-ups, however I did beat affinity in a weekly modern tournament without any ridiculous mulligans.
I feel like something with Pestilence Demon and that 0/2 from ravnica that puts a copy of its self whenever its dealt damage could be good. Maybe with avacyn?
The sideboard is Mike Kenny's, from an SCG a couple of weeks ago. The main deck is loosely based on Owen Turtenwald's, from his pick of the week. Terastadon is vital to combating Liliana of the Veil. I also want to bring attention to a gifts hive tron, created by our very own LegitKarona. http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/deck-creation-modern/543487-hivatron. This deck attempts to combat some of the weaknesses UW tron has.
Ok, so UR delver is the monster of the format. Multiple pros say that this is the best deck in modern right now, so any new deck coming into the format needs to have a decent matchup against UR delver.
I think that the hatebear lists have potential, but are often too weak to be competitive. Most hatebear lists feel like I'm in a wrestling match against a much heavier and stronger opponent. I may have more experience, but my opponent's raw power will beat my skill. I feel like cards such as Leonin Arbiter and other weaker bodies just ask to be beaten by decently sized creatures. I also wanted to crush liliana decks without even trying. With all this in mind, here is junk hatebears with some better creatures.
The 23 lands was a huge mistake.
Next modern tournament I attend, I will be running 20.
Firedancer was very good. Every time I drew it against an aggro player, they would either have to kill it or lose to me wiping their board.
The Flames of the Blood Hand were very good. In some matchups, like G/B and Junk, flames is really high impact on its own, and is therefore very good against them. Flames also randomly turns off lifegain like Kitchen Finks. If I had to cut something for more shard volley, it would probably be the Skullcrack. Flames and Skullcrack are very similar, but flames gets the extra one damage in.
Round One: Junk midrange
This round was really easy, the game he did win was off me hitting 3 Vexing Devils and him having double inquisition plus Scavenging Ooze.
Sideboarding--
+3 Blood Moon
+2 Searing Blaze
+1 Searing Blood
-4 Magma Jet
-1 Skullcrack
Here I thought he was more the hatebears list, and I might have sideboarded incorrectly. (2-1) (1-0)
Round Two: Aggro Zoo with Mutagenic Growth
This match was also easy. He stumbled game one, and game two Satyr Firedancer and Searing Blaze took over the game
Sideboarding--
+4 Satyr Firedancer
+2 Searing Blaze
+1 Searing Blood
-4 Spark Elemental
-3 Skullcrack
(2-0) (2-0)
Round Three: Uwr Geist
This match I was able to steal game one, and he got game two with mana leak plus Geist of saint traft. Game three I was able to get him down fairly low with a blood moon on the field, and he cast an electrolyze, and missed a goblin guide trigger. Judge was called, and he ruled that he would shuffle, and reverse game state. He then nearly got the game by flipping a plains of the guide. I got him to two, and the turn he nearly won with Clique plus Hellkite, I ripped Magma Jet to seal the match
Sideboarding--
+3 Blood Moon
+1 Hellspark Elemental
-4 Shard Volley ( really think this was a mistake. )
(2-1) (3-0)
Round Four: Uwr Twin
Game one, I win the die roll, and steamroll the twin deck like I should game one(on one land nonetheless :P). Game two, I am bit slow, and he combos off. Game three, he lands a turn two spellskite, which I volley + Searing Blood. He fails to find a fourth land, and I take the match a couple of turns later.
Sideboarding--
+3 Blood Moon
+1 Searing Blood ( Here I figured that with his wall, exarch and clique, I would be able to not lose to much advantage by clearing a creature)
-4 Magma Jet ( to slow against combo )
(2-1) (4-0!!)
Round 5-6
Double draw into top seed in top 8
Top 8 #1: Uwr Control
This matchup is absolutely abysmal for the control player, and I take it 2-0
Top 8 #2: Melria Pod
Here, my skullcracks and flames of the blood hand did a lot of work. He was able to nearly seal the game spike feeder game three, but I had skullcrack plus volley to seal it.
His Eathersworn Canonist did a lot of work, allowing him two win game 2, He had a spike feeder, which in response I tried to skullcrack. That resolved, but I wasnt able to kill him with Volley, and he was able to gain an extra two on my turn.
A play I am not to sure about is that I bolted his bird turn one both games that I won. I am not very scared of any of his two drops, and I think that the extra turn that I gain is worth the bolt. Really not to sure though. 2-1
Top 8 #3: Amulet of Vigor combo
This really wasnt a match, as I guess his luck ran out form the tournament. He had to mull to a slow start game one, and I killed him. Game two, he mulled to three, and didnt find any of his ( I think ) three leyline of sanctitys.
I won 400$ credit, which is really cool, especially when considering I couldn't run any fetches due to budget constraints.
I think I made a lot of my errors in sideboarding, and I wonder what I should do better next time.
Hey guys,
this is the list that I took to my local Ptq, and I found that I could get my opponents down to 7-10, but couldn't find the marauders to seal the game.
I think I need more reach in the deck, and I was thinking about maybe Tymaret, the Murder King. This decks worst matchup is Mono U, so I also need help beating that in the sideboard.
