A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

So I decided to build my first cube using this set. I've been thinking about building a cube for a while now, as it is quite the undertaking, but this set really does make it easy.

This cube a little more than 600 cards (604 to be exact) and is designed for four people to do two consecutive drafts (we build 60-card draft decks). It can support play for up to 8 people, however, with a single draft. I went with the conventional wisdom of doing 4 of each common, 2 of each uncommon, and 1 of each rare/mythic. That accounts for 592 of 604 cards, so what are the other twelve? Read on...

First I wil describe how we run the draft. Each rarity sits in a pile on the table (404 commons, 120 uncommons, 80 rares/mythics). We each select 10 commons, 3 uncommons, and 2 rare/mythics. With four people drafting, thats 10 packs worth of cards each (again, two consecutive drafts of 5 15-card packs each for building 60-card decks); only four commons are left over this way.

Since the sum of the set mythics/rares is only 68 cards, and that only gets us enough for 8.5 packs worth each, I needed to add 12 cards to round out the 10 packs. Here is what I added:

    - The Lorwyn 5 Planeswalkers (counted as mythics, using M10 versions)
    - The remainder of the Lorwyn Command cycle (Profane, Primal, Incendiary, Austere)
    - The remainder of the Shards of Alara block planeswalkers (Ajani V., Tezz the Seeker, Nicol Bolas)

Thats 2 of each color and 2 gold cards. Rarity-wise, thats 8 mythics and 4 rares. The only imbalance I see is that blue ends up short a rare but up a mythic (Tezz rounds out the Command cycle since Cryptic is already in the set). Also, there are slightly more gold cards than hybrid. However, I think this is very minor and should not affect power levels at this sized cube. I'm actually more concerned with the power level of Doubling Season now that I've added so many walkers, but I like the idea of having all the 'walkers from this time period in the set, as they are fun, iconic, and none are too particularly busted in draft. The remaining Commands were a convenient way to balance out the rest to get to 80, since I was adding an extra blue mythic (Tezz).

I'm curous what people think about this, I spent quite a bit of time working out the logistics. Feel free to share your thoughts, thanks!
