fulminator mage can only destroy non-basics, so it does not affect scapeshift at all because the trigger for Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle will still be on the stack
Right, but in reality I've never seen a Scapeshift list with 5 basic Mountains, so in practice the question with Fulminator Mage will come up because they would throw down a Stomping Ground, Breeding Pool, etc.
So I can't "hard counter" a Scapeshift, but I can slow them down by 1 turn/1 land. The whole thing with scapeshift / valakut triggers is pretty arcane, so this interests me as a part of magic study in addition to deckbuilding. Is there any way the previous poster or somebody else can explain to me in detail why exactly fulminator can effect Valakut in such a fashion?
Title is pretty self explanatory... trying to figure out if Fulminator Mage is good sideboard tech vs Scapeshift, specifically, can I sac a fulminator mage when the Valakut, the Molten Elder enters the battlefield but before the trigger goes on the stack.
So imagine your opponent scapes with Fulminator on board. What's confusing me is how the whole "lands entering the battlefield" would effect the state of triggers on the stack, since as far as I know, you can't respond to lands.
So for TLDR, can I use Fulminator to stop Scapeshift? If so, how exactly, and if not, why not?
Red Black Control is back and it's back ugly. This deck has good Game 1 against both Esper and aggro in testing, sideboarding out dead cards for gas makes games 2 and 3 brutal. Between Chandra, Read the Bones, and Magma Jet, there's a lot of deck digging going on here and a lot of getting down to what's needed to win. This is probably the only competitive deck right now that can make Master of Cruelties work. He probably wins about 1 out of every 3 or so games, but he's surprisingly good on defense, and he's a threat they have to kill which draws cards and attention away from your other threats.
So from what I understand, the ruling on Rain of Gore and creatures with lifelink (for reference: Archangel of Thune) is that lifelink does NOT trigger Rain because of the wording on rain and lifelink.
Rain says "if a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life...." combat damage from a life linker does NOT trigger rain because it is actually the combat damage which is causing you to gain life, not the ability of lifelink, which merely places a status effect on said creature causing them to gain life whenever they deal damage.
BUT, if a creature deals damage outside combat, such as Grim Lavamancer or Prodigal Sorcerer with lifelink, this DOES trigger Rain of Gore.
I could be wrong about that last part, but if I'm not, what happens when you fight with a card like Domri Rade or Uvenwald Tracker?
Still very much a beta. Primary concern is life loss. Might want to go 3/1 on Thoughtseize vs Inquisition of Kozilek. May even test without shocklands and see if the mana still works

That's kinda what I thought, but then on the other hand, the ability is causing the fight. The damage itself is causing the actual lifegain.
