Every time you try to get back up on the mono-red train, they slap you back down.

Is Vial smasher burn an option now?

Looks like the engine is Retreat to Kazandu / Zuran Orb + Fastbond + Crucible of Worlds / Ramunap Excavator. You can combo with several cards in the deck, infinite mana, +1/+1 counters, landfall triggers....

It's been quite some time but I decided to come back to this deck, as a way to fight the Edgars that keep popping up and the decks that appeared to fight him. Even though we lost quite a lot with the MTGO banlist, mainly survival, the bannings of top-of-the-deck and demonic tutor, theoretically, will make it harder to fight continuous board presences with wraths, and Marath can rebuild from a single wrath very quickly.

I don't have many of the cards for this deck anymore but I'll put together a beta version of it and test it today. Later I'll update this with the test list and potential changes.

Marath's been putting up results on Modo, so maybe we can bring this thread back to life.

Losing Demonic and Vampiric will hurt uncle Ed.

What do you think about adding Athreos, God Of Passage? In any choice the opponent takes, it turns in our favor, and helps recovering from board wipes

    Testing it tonight

They are not, but you are also no killing anyone with a 3/1 on this format. Breya stopping it with a thopter, tymna-x stopping with any number of creatures, baral won't block it and this could be anything else, really, etc.

Edgar wins by creating an oppressive board presence very quickly, and maybe if your meta calls for this type of effect, this could be a good creature to have, but it does not have evasion (like Falkenrath Aristocrat) nor it grows big (like Yaheeni), so it's really the least pwoerful card with this effect.

The vampire that turns indestructible is good is cute but very life-intensive. Having 3 power is nothing special, it's more of a meta call. The flash one is cool but I didn't get one, he was supposed to come in but when I got the cards I forgot he existed.

I took out Child of Night, the 3-drop Aristocrat and Voldaren Pariah. She wasn't very hard to flip and was usually a beating against midrange or decks with few creatures but she was the biggest cmc we ran, and with fewer discard outlets she was getting less and less good. We also changed Liliana of the Veil for something, so that's one less discard outlet to power her out.

Both 1-drop vampires, the 3-drop that poops out tokens, vampire hellrider and Unexplored Territory. Mutavault also came in and Westveil came out.

Another day of testing and Edgar is X-1 on test games against Jace High Tide and Still undefeated against Baral, nowith Ixalan updates. Strangely, the deck went 7-7 against Neheb big red. The deck plays a lot of boardwipes that hurts the players, disruption against non-basic lands and everything is big. Not to be taken too seriously since no one plays this, though.

Whoever wants to keep posting on this thread, we can make it about the MTGO banlist Edgar, which BTW went 4-0 once more last week. We have until November for it to be banned anyway ;p

Would edgar really be banned in 30 life you think? BTW is your tapped out list updated?

He might not be since Leagues are suffering on MODO, so by November he might not be the biggest problem on line. I'll update it next weekend, before the new cards become legal.

3-0-1, ID'ing the last round again so we could all go home earlier. Titania, Zurgo, Baral Poly. We had some Oloros and Keranos that tryed to out-play the meta but all of their Pyroclasm effects and Engineered Plague-like enchantments only drag them down since they lost round 1 or 2 to Mono B Sidisi and Jace HT.

The problem of trying to solve it all during deckbuilding and going for counters to the current fad is that your deck also have to beat the ones that you did not came side-boarded for. Oloro already has an advantage over Edgar b/c of the life cushion but lost to HT because it was trying to interact on the wrong axis. The same is true for the Keranos player, who is a great player, but ended up losing round 1 and did not face any Edgars b/c of it.

If you have a "best deck", doesn't have to be by a great margin, and the counters to it just don't have a great % over the rest of the field, then you are better off playing the "best deck". Reducing Edgars' power to "other people not trying to counter it" is a very simplistic point of view, one that ends up not holding up most of the times. If all people just try to angle-shoot against Edgar they leave their bums uncovered for some other 'unfair' strategy to exploit the meta, one that's naturally good against Ed and people trying to punish creatures at sorcery speed, whoever this strategy might be.

Edric warped the meta, was a big trouble to the diversity and provided a very steep entry barrier for new players to overcome, as it was oppressive against untuned decks. Edgar is the same but in different colors. You might think it's easy to beat it, but I thought Vial wasn't difficult to beat when it was legal.

The mirror was the reason I put it in the first place, but then we noticed that it makes impossible to create blockers. The opponent gets so behind on the board that it's even funny. We had more effects in (Thalia, Blind Obedience, the white creature) but costing more than 1 mana makes it hard to play it and another vampire, so we ended up staying with just the best one.

Turn 1 vampire followed by turn 2 this and another 1 drop is a very strong opener.
