  • posted a message on Commander 2011 deck worth buying?
Hey guys long time standard player here looking to get into edh. I did some browsing and decided i want to play abzan in commander. So is the 2011 counterpunch deck worth buying now for around $90-$120 or would I get more bang for my buck if i build my own ghave deck from the ground up? I just don't want to buy the precon and ended up scraping 80% of the deck for better cards. If that's the case I rather build it from singles.

    Thanks

@Control, Yeah the deck is a little threat light but most of the time Nylea will count as a creature.Plus Boon Satyr allows me to swing with mana dorks. The deck's main goal is to get garruk out as quick as possible so I can dig into my threats, refill my hand, and unload fodder to chump block. Nylea's activated ability allows me to steal games by unloading +20 mana into pumping mana dorks when they get in unblocked, hence why I'm so sold on the voyaging satyr

Here is the build I currently pilot at my lgs. the deck plays fairly well against most decks with the exception of control (due to the inherent nature of the deck to over-commit plus their verdicts) and extreme aggro strategies if I can't find a Disciple. Mono black can be troublesome too but then again anything with lifebane will give me problems.

what I love is the nut draws. I particularly recalled one game in which I first turn elvish mystic. Second turn drew into a burning-tree to add to the one already in my hand and went burning-tree ----> burning-tree----> sylvan caryatid. 3rd turn I dropped a nykthos, activate it and drop a garruk into a arbor colossus and it was GG from there. However that is an once every 100 games scenario kind of thing, but it happens.

I also run a minor constellation thing for extra draws when I don't have garruk to keep my hand fully stocked. The only thing I wish I had more of is interactions with my opponent. Polukranos is a 4 of because I always expect the first one to be removed and serves as my only removal.
I also believe 4 nykthos is necessary if the base of the deck is to ramp hardcore.

Going forward for m15, I plan on enjoying my last few months with my burning-trees, going to try to fit nissa in, and will probably splash black to trade caller of beast for apex predator but that's another deck.

cards I will be experimenting with from m15 are reclamation sage, Kalonian Twingrove (jank, but I like it), scuttling doom engine (may be a sideboard thing for decks running elspeth), Soul of New Phyrexia (potential anti-wrath),Soul of Zendikar (I'm not completely sold on this guy, but will playtest) and Hornet Queen (because you never have enough flying hate in green). Also maybe Terra Stomper because he gives 3 green symbols and comes with trample

I'm not sure if scuttling doom engineshould be a 4 of. It doesn't add to the devotion. Maybe cut 2 doom engine for arbor colossus or soul of zendikar so you can stop stop Stormbreath and D.demon. Have you considered some amount of chord of calling? Also if there isn't a lot of gods going around perhaps trade unravel the aether for reclamation sage. At the very least the sage gives you one devotion.

I like Kalonian Hydra here for the ultimate win-more via doubling counters for your mistcutters and your already monstrous Poly K and Hydra Broodmaster. Plus more Hydras!

In a competitive format, it seems unlikely this will be played, However that doesn't mean I won't have fun playing her.

    In standard
me: behold the fearsome Polukranos reincarnated *places 1/1 snake token on table* Tremble at his might!
    opponent: so?
    me: it has deathtouch
opponent OH GAWD NO, KILL IT NOW, PLEASE SOMEONE! *precinct captain steps on snake*
    me: damn.

    In EDH
me: *points at each player* you get a snake!

I've been collecting Hydras since the start of Theros and this is definitely worth trying.

Yeah I fully expect W/B humans to be a thing now. Maybe Cartel Aristocrat will see more play.

I'm not really sure what to make of Ajani. I don't want to be too quick to write him off as unplayable. As with all new walkers, the deckbuilder in me wants to make him work somehow. I could see myself trying him as a 1-2 of in an g/w aggro deck for late game staying power against midrange decks. Against control He'll probably be next to useless as elspeth's token can chump block for days and digging for one creature won't make much of a difference.

In a midrange shell Ajani's in a rough spot. If I'm running naya I'm pretty sure I want to drop stormbreath 9/10 time. For junk ajani competes against archangel of thune, BLood baron, and obzedat so that's rough. Ajani seems good at breaking creature stalls but there are better ways to do that than ajani.

Let's wait and see. Someone is going to try to break him.

  • posted a message on G/W in standard
    Hello everyone

Just wondering, could someone explain to me why exactly G/W aggro & G/W midrange has fallen out of favor in the meta? It was present before Born of the Gods. Post BNG G/W picks up Brimaz and Courser of Kruphix (if they want courser over smiter). I haven't heard much about any G/W decks making waves at any tournaments as of lately. So what has changed in the meta that caused this?

    Thanks
