posted a message on Why is Kaladesh a month early?
The release schedule is based on a lot of factors. Some of the biggest are competing products (even if they're not in the same industry) and school schedules for high-school and college-aged kids (one of MTG's biggest demographics). The fall set comes out just as school is starting and the weather is changing. That means less competition from outdoor activities and fewer people traveling (thereby being more likely to attend events or even play at home).

The holidays (November, December) are typically slower, because MTG has to compete with tons of other products that are given as gifts.

The spring set typically will release during the window where most students are on Spring Break which will give a boost to the number of available players.

The late-spring set seems to hit a bit before people start going on summer vacation. The summer sets are typically the lowest selling of the year, which is likely why they'd put the core sets in that slot (they're likely to sell worse anyway since they're mostly reprints). Since people are going on vacation and doing outdoor activities, it dilutes the player base a bunch.

Cool concept, but Judgment Day doesn't really work within the rules. The wording you'd need to make the damage ability works would probably be too long for the text to fit on an actual card. Even if it's not, it reads a bit strangely. "Each creature has "When a creature dealt combat damage by this creature this turn dies, put a judgment counter on this creature.""

A workable alternative might be something like this:

Judgment day enters the battlefield with X judgment counters on it.
Whenever an attacking creature deals combat damage, move a Judgment counter from ~ onto that creature.
When ~ has no Judgment counters on it, sacrifice it. If you do, destroy all creatures will judgment counters on them.

Tax Collection seems like a fine card mechanically, though the Wall should probably have defender. The flavor doesn't really make much sense at first blush; the counterspell part does, but it's unclear what a wall has to do with collecting taxes. I assume the idea is that's what the taxes went toward. If that's the case, I think a delayed trigger makes it read a lot better. "Counter target spell unless its controller pays 2. If that player does, put a 0/3 colorless Wall artifact creature token with defender onto the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step." Flavor text would obviously help with the concept as well.

Splintering Lie feels off in several ways. The default case isn't a card you'd ever want to play. 3 mana for a 1/1 with no evasion or other notable abilities is far below the curve. When it feels like you have to kick something to make it useful, it defeats the purpose of kicker. but, even kicked, this feels pretty weak. You can pay 5 mana for a 2/2 that leaves behind a 1/1 or 7 mana for a 3/3 that leaves behind two 1/1s. Compare to Carrier Thrall or MaUSolEUmGUaRd

Lastly, this card feels more GU or even mono-G than mono-U. Blue typically copies other creatures, while green will make copies of itself (see Giant Adephage, Sprouting Phytohydra, Spawnwrithe & Essence of the Wild). Blue also typically gets its card advantage via card draw, not creature replacement.

Unceasing Growth is an interesting effect, but I've never really been a fan of Epic as a keyword. In this case, one board wipe will mean a game loss unless you have non-spell based way to make tokens. It does lead to interesting deck-building decisions.

Just a heads up; the way double-faced cards appear in packs in SOI is different than in the original Innistrad block. Every pack has a common or uncommon DFC that replaces a common. 1 in 8 packs has a Rare or Mythic Rare DFC that replaces another common (in addition to the Common/Uncommon DFC). With that in mind, the "booster" field should look something like this:

    {
          "name" : "Shadows Over Innistrad",
       "booster" : [ ["land","checklist"]

Reverted Shambler seems fine for constructed, but is probably too strong for limited. If this comes down on turn 2 and your opponent doesn't have a follow up, it gets out of hand very quickly. It's also a bit strange with some of the cards that check for "non-human" transformation, like Immerwolf and Cult of the Waxing Moon

Emrakul, the Vast Devourer has flavor, gameplay and templating issues.

    • Flavor - Eldrazi are native to the Blind Eternities (the space in between planes) so it doesn't make sense for one to have a planeswalker spark.
    • Gameplay - The -3 ability is severely overloaded. It needs to do less and be a lot more powerful given the mana cost. Speaking of which, the mana cost is entirely too restrictive and feels odd for the sake of being odd. Needing every color of mana and 5 colorless mana is pretty contradictory from a deck-building standpoint.
    • Templating - "Exile target card," is far too broad. Since it does specify a zone or card type, it can literally target any card, even cards in hidden zones or exile. "Activate Emrakul's +1 targeting the 32nd card from the top in your library," would be a legal way to play that ability, for example. The card text for the -3 ability alone wouldn't even fit on a normal-sized card.

Scodrid, God of Disharmony is an example of overloading a design. This is like 4 or 5 cards squeezed into one. Ignoring the fact that all that text could never fit comfortably on a card, this card requires far too much bookkeeping and would likely lead to analysis paralysis.

Velsir, Illusive Mindknight feels a bit weak. His current ability line up leads to awkward play patterns. If you +1 him right away, it has no real effect on the game state. If you -3 him right away, you'll often want to avoid doing +1 on the following turns, otherwise you'll lose the permanent you've taken control of. Changing the sequence to +1 then -3 leads to a similar situation. Activating his +1 loses you the stolen permanent and activating his -3 loses you both permanents, since he goes to the graveyard. So either you activate his -3 immediately and then he sits there doing nothing for a long time; or you activate his +1 multiple turns in a row until he can do something worthwhile. Either way, he's taking a lot of time off.

    1) How much have you played with the format, roughly?
I've done 1 or 2 drafts every week since release.

    2) Which common was better than you expected?
Bone Saw; I didn't think it'd be worth a card for the small effect, but it's great as a surge enabler. It also does work in the ally decks to make your small fliers and first strikers into threats that need answers that much faster.

    3) Which common was worse than you expected?
Tar Snare. It's typically an overly expensive combat trick, and Unnatural Endurance would do the same thing more efficiently. When it can straight up remove something, it's typically a 2 or 3 drop, so it's not super efficient there either.

    4) What's the most underappreciated card?
Sparkmage's Gambit. It's a great sideboard card that helps get through extra damage in a board stall, or clears out small creatures in a race situation.

    5) What's the worst common that people still play?
Either Searing Light or Eldrazi Aggressor. The former is a decent sideboard card, but I do still see people main deck it. Usually when I see people playing the latter, it's for synergy reasons. They have a bunch cards like Sky Scourer and Nettle Drone and would rather play another colorless creature than a better, colored creature.

    6) What was your favorite archetype?
The ones I've enjoyed the most are white-based allies (WB or RW) and UR tempo.

    7) Which archetype wasn't as good as you'd expected?
Blue-based control decks got a huge downgrade vs. BFZ draft. The format sped up a bit too much for them to really hold their own unless they get perfect opens.

    8) Which colors were the best and worst?
Blue is definitely the weakest color overall, and white the strongest, but I think there's not a huge differential like there was with Green in BFZ. Even as the weakest color, blue is solid.

    9) Thoughts on the format as a whole?
Definite upgrade from BFZ. Cohort plays a lot better than it initially read and is probably one of the best mechanics in the set for limited. I do wish there were more build-arounds that let you tackle deck-building from different angles along the lines of Spider Spawning or Secret Plans. I also wish the BG archetype were a bit stronger, because it has an interesting play style, but does it's thing a little too inconsistently. Overall, I liked the format. I'd rate it about the same as triple Theros.

The numbers of Unhappy Servitude seem fine. The bigger issue is that it's out of pie. Tapping creatures isn't typically a black thing (even if they played around with it a bit in Planar Chaos and M11). I think something along the lines of Brink of Disaster could work. "Whenever enchanted creature becomes tapped, destroy it unless it's controller pays 2 life." The original version is fine as a WB or UB card.

Intrepid Chonomancer doesn't have a power and toughness, so it's a little hard to judge. That said, Eonwalker feels a bit weak, and feels clunky as templated. Returning at the beginning of combat tapped and attacking feels odd, because it's before attackers are declared, but it's already attacking. The activated ability on Chronomancer also feels only tangentially related. I think having the transformation/suspend tied to the ability somehow would feel more natural than have an Ophidian trigger.

    Quote from TearingEons »
Nahiri being a Kor, which with only two exception are mono-W, could have seen her stay a mono colored 'walker with retribution styled abilities. On the other hand, I will acknowledge that lithomancy toes the line of geomancy and we have seen her do some crazy things with the ground, so adding R is totally understandable. But my thoughts were 'Is adding R warranted just because she is sufficiently angry at this point in her life?' 'If she calms down (and survives), will she continue to have red or go back to one color?'
Assuming she sticks around, I think she'll stick to being RW. Red isn't just the color of anger, but the color of passion and emotion in general. The last story that she showed up in was all about how she started RW, then became mono-W over the years, then went back to being RW.

And for those first few centuries, she had lived—really lived—among her own people, the kor. She had cooed at babies and wept at funerals, laughed around tables piled with good food, and fell in love…twice. She had taught lithomancy to a long, long stream of students, showing them how to use stone and the metal within it to form objects and weapons.

But her students learned and moved on. Her lovers aged and died. Birth followed birth, over and over, and one funeral followed another, and eventually she couldn't remember why it mattered…any of it.

All the pleasure and heartache of life rushed over her in a moment. Memories flooded her mind—the sights and sounds and smells of the bustling marketplace, the laughter in her heart, the taste of her lover's kiss, the bitter sting of tears. This had been a place of life once, a place where she had lived, and she had missed its fall.

Fury—another feeling she had forgotten. It felt good.

She would go and find him, wake him up if she needed to, remind him of her and Zendikar and the friendship they had once shared, remind him what it was to live, to feel, to care. She had saved Zendikar, and now she would save him. And then she would return and walk among her people again, she would teach and laugh and love again, and it would matter again. It would all matter.

I think you misunderstood. Since it lets you 'wish' for anything but cards in your graveyard, if you have Dryad Militant out, you can just have a stack of, say, lightning bolts or any other instant and keep wishing for the same card every turn. If it kept you from wishing for cards in your graveyard and in exile than it leads to more interesting decisions turn after turn.

Gregarious Mage is an interesting design. I think it probably needs some play testing and number-tweaking to get it just right though. As it is right now, I think it might be a bit strong in casual play where outside of the game means anything in your collection. I'm not sure what deck wants Avatar of Stillness. At CMC 8 a control deck is going to want a finisher, but this is the opposite. Aggressive decks aren't going to want this at all, but it's also too costly to slow them down. Midrange decks might like this if not for the life-setting ability. The flavor is spot-on, but I think the gameplay this card encourages isn't terribly interesting.

Elvish Hexmage is an interesting design, but I'm not a big fan of cheap creatures having hexproof, even if this one gives you a window to respond. Barrier seems like a decently fixed version of absorb. This card in particular isn't too interesting, other than as a proof-of-concept. I feel like a format with barrier would want a greater number of red ping effects. Cards like Goblin Arsonist, Kolaghan Aspirant and Sparkmage Apprentice.

posted a message on Stores selling one OGW intro pack per person during pre-release period?
It's called open-dueling and has been going on for a long time. The idea is that if someone doesn't want to participate in the actual pre-release tournament, you set up a side event and sell them an intro pack. Then they can play other players that aren't in the tournament (or even tournament players between rounds) and still get the pre-release experience in a non-competitive environment. Technically, you're not supposed to sell the intro packs unless the person is int he open-dueling event, but there's nothing that stops them from simply joining just to buy the intro pack and drop. Pre-release allocations for future pre-releases are based on the number of players in both the main events and any open-dueling, so it's in the store's best interest to register the people buying the intro packs into the side event.

Crystal Palace feels a bit weak. Especially for a Legendary land. The second ability has a few too many riders that make it underwhelming. I think you could remove the Rhystic rider, the colorless mana in the activation, and change the ability so that it can only be activated on your turn.

I feel like this card is trying to do too much at once. It also doesn't feel like it needs to be a 5-color card. The fact that the abilities are symmetrical, but the controller gets all the benefit is also a little strange. "Cares about tapped lands" is interesting design space that's been done in the game before, but not since mana burn went away. Check Tunnel Ingus for a better wording of the first ability.

Ezuri's ability is a trigger; Bramblewood Paragon's ability is a replacement effect; it changes the way the other warrior enters the battlefield. It's not a triggered ability and doesn't use the stack. In this case, the Elvish Warrior will enter as a 3/4 and won't trigger Ezuri's ability.

I wonder why you only run very few aggressiv one-drops in such a cube. Is straight aggro not as good, when everyone hs early interaction?
I tried to avoid hyper-aggressive creatures like Goblin Guide and Rabblemaster because I wanted the cube to be more about pressing incremental advantages. I tried to include lots of mana sinks and cards that get better over time to increase the amount of decision-making that's necessary both during deckbuilding and in-game. It's still possible to build a fairly aggressive deck, but not the win-on-turn-4 sort of decks that you can sometimes run into in powered cubes.

Drafted ravnic's casual cube. The archetypes were pretty clear, which is good. Feels like a slower format, which I like. I did feel like there was a lack of removal in the draft, however. Slow formats usually don't want hyper-efficient removal, but slower removal is usually fine. I think adding some weaker/slower removal would do the cube well.

I'm putting the finishing touches on my Tiny Cube before I sleeve it up and test out in the real world. Interested to see what sorts of decks people draft.

Supremacy seems pretty busted. The way it's currently worded, it's an 8/8 that gives all your other creatures +2/+2 for 6 generic mana.

I don't know that there's any good way to template the effect that I assume you actually want (giving +1/+1 for each time you've activated its ability). The simplest is to put some kind of counter on it whenever you activate and then have it give creatures +X/+X where X is the number of those counters, but even that becomes a little unwieldy, word-wise.

    "2brid" mana is "{2W}" (2/W).

Painter Queen feels a bit underwhelming because Painter's Servant exists. I realize it's supposed to be a reference to Servant and Reaper King, but she really needs a complimentary design; the current design just feels like a bigger version of Painter's Servant. I think, rather than changing colors, she needs to care about color. Something like "When Painter Queen enters the battlefield, choose a color. 2: Tap target permanent of the chosen color," for example. Makign her synergize with Servant works better for flavor and gameplay.

From a sales perspective, Battle for Zendikar is extremely successful. We're only one store, but for us it's sold about 2.5x as much sealed product and 3x as many event entries as compared to Khans, and Khans sold really well. The outlier seems to be Game Day, where there were less entries than Khans by a big margin. The other events have more than made up for it though.

In Vigilance It Hunts is trying to do too much. It feels like 2 or 3 cards' worth of effects in a single card. I also don't think all that text would fit comfortably into the text box.

The first ability feels arbitrary and confusing. For example, lets say that I have 2 more creatures than the opponent with the most creatures, including It Hunts, which is active. Now you kill one of my creatures. Is the Nephilim still a creature or not?

The second and final abilities both create unbreakable loops. If a player draws a card that's not the first draw that turn, then each other player will draw a card, which will trigger the ability again, which will trigger the ability again and again and again... the same thing happens with the life gain trigger.

Nameless but Enduring is an interesting design; it very much feels like a build-around Commander. The stats do feel a little low, however. I feel like it could definitely stand to have higher toughness at the very least. The only other point I can see is that I feel as though it should round up the damage prevention. With the current wording, if you get hit by a 1-power creature, you'll still take the 1 damage. That feels a little odd and counter intuitive.

Rampaging Strike feels a bit strange. The second clause is super-specific. The design seems a bit schizophrenic. The way to get a lot of damage out of this is to run a lot of red and green creatures yourself, but if you have enough creatures for the second clause to be relevant, odds are you're not going to want to play a board wipe. If you're playing creatures big enough to survive this, odds are you're not going to have a lot of them in play, so the extra damage feels almost like trinket text.

I also don't feel like this card is green in any way. If this is meant to be a color-hoser, I think there are probably more interesting effects for the second clause. If this is supposed to be a color-boon, I think giving the surviving creatures a bonus is a lot more workable. Something like "For each creature that is red and green you control dealt damage this way, that creature gains first strike and trample until end of turn."

    Quote from ArchSinccubus »
Life costs G or 1 less to cast for each point of devotion you have for green.
Just FYI, reducing the cost by colored mana also applies to generic mana costs unless the card says otherwise (see Ragemonger and Edgewalker.) So the ability could just be "~ costs G less to cast for each point of green devotion." and it'd still work the same, though it'd probably need reminder text, which sort of makes it a wash.

Labor of Cruelty is a clever design. In a vacuum, i like it a lot, but from a practical standpoint, I don't know that it makes a lot of sense in any deck. A control deck isn't going to have a bunch of creatures to conspire/convoke with and a creature-heavy black deck is likely going to be more interested in attacking than tapping their creatures. Still, it's very flexible and seems like it'd be a solid card in limited at the very least.
