posted a message on Random Card of the Day - Landbind Ritual
What I like besides everything else that has already been said, is that they took an old, good card and varied it slightly such that it fills a different role. Nobody cares for an Eternal Witness once it is on the battlefield, but this guy? It deters big beaters for days (actually, while writing, I noticed that I should put it in my Atraxa Planeswalker deck Grin ). I wished that they printed creatures like this more often, like a Duplicant with Trample, a Burning-Tree Emissary with Double Strike, a Snapcaster Mage with Prowess, a Solemn Simulacrum with Graft, a Farhaven Elf with Indestructible, a Recruiter of the Guard with protection from monocolored... of course, each with a certain drawback. You get the idea.
I think it would make games much more interesting: Instead of cluttering the the battlefield with otherwise useless chump blockers, you'd have to play around the creatures' drawbacks, while gaining advantage in other areas, rewarding you for good plays. These value creatures might even give aggro decks an edge, since they'd be able to play creatures that are efficient in combat while still providing some immediate value, something those decks severly lack in Commander.

Has anyone considered Edric, Spymaster of Trest? It has been a stellar imitation of Propaganda and Ghostly Prison for me. It diverts all those small attackers from the early game to our opponents, leaving our planeswalkers alone. Also, we can swing with Atraxa and draw an extra card almost every turn.

I think painlands and/or scry temples and/or checklands are reasonable. Scry temples would actually be a really good fit, simply because you can scry away lands whose color you don't need, thus actively helping you even more with color fixing. Additionally, their flavor is very specific and thus probably won't see Standard for a long time, so they could mean these lands....

Of course, as probably everyone else, I'm also hoping for fetches and shocks Wink

I'd swap out Curse of the Forsaken with Path of Bravery. Same CMC, same basic function, but with a tacked on anthem that is always on with this deck.

Isn't Curse of the Forsaken superior to Path of Bravery? It triggers for each attacking creature, giving Karlov two counters for each of your attacking creatures, while Path of Bravery triggers only once for all creatures. The anthem is negligible for Karlov, since it doesn't really matter whether he's 12/12 or 13/13....

    Quote from Sink-Error »
Gift or Orzhova has 2 4 1 written allover it. Lone Rider seems a reasonable inclusion, but Vampire Cutthroat and farbog are terrible, barely limited playable. Authority of the Counsuls seems to do nothing too - Karlov should be so big he doesn't need to worry about blockers.

Yeah, all suras have the 2-for-1 problem, but I think this one might be worth the slot. It gives evasion and lifelink, both of which are not present on Karlov himself, but very important for the deck to work.
Vampire Cutthroat is a strict upgrade compared to Trained Caracal (whcich is included in the deck list). I think most of the cards that can reliably give Karlov counters on turn two should be considered, since he will proceed to dominate combat himself. Though you're probably right with Farbog Revenant, it's just too expensive.
The point about Authority of the Consuls is not that Karlov might die in combat, but that it passively gains you life from very early on, while you have to invest almost nothing. Opposing creatures entering the battlefield tapped is just icing on the cake, since the opponent has no chance to play chump blockers (which are a real issue) on his turn.

Have you considered Gift of Orzhova? It has been an all-star in my Karlov deck. Fits nicely into the curve.

Lone Rider, Vampire Cutthroat (and maybe Farbog Revenant) from Eldritch Moon are really good for this deck, too.

Oh, and Authority of the Consuls will also be really helpful.

Huh didn't expect that. The art is gorgeous, and I'll be happy to pull one, if only to trade it for other cool cards in case I don't need it.

I don't think this will affect WOTC's reprint policy. I mean, they reprinted Mana Crypt just this year. Also, they acknowledged that reprinting cards this way merely alleviates the problem of reprints and doesn't solve it. We will continue to see high quality reprints in the future, most likely at the same rate as before.

    Quote from NGW »

I would shell out for a box set of these (well, preferably for the whole set of them).

That would be something WotC should do after the full block is released, put a big price tag on it if they have to, but make these available for those that want them.

Woah, ancient Egyptian world, finally! It's a theme I think is way too underrated....

I speculate that the five gods (and their factions) will be enemy-colored. The only real reason I have for this is that we haven't had an enemy-color block or even set for a long time. Also, for me, if I had to choose five, enemy-colored gods would make a lot of sense: WR and WB gods fit better in a desert world than WG and WU gods. Also, UG and BG gods would fit better than RG and WG gods into a jungle subtheme that a desert world is bound to have somewhere, at least to a small extent.

Cost and color are appropriate, and the flavor is definitely a hit. I don't like that the card is very narrow in application. Although the wording is probably correct, orientating on the wording of old cards isn't a good idea (even if it's the oracle wording). A very new card that does something similar is Ride Down, so maybe giving the creatures trample would have been better.

Passwall Adept is unblockable as long as an opponent controls a creature with defender.
"The best way out is always through."
    2/2

Overall good card, costs and color are appropriate, and IMO the challenge is fulfilled in a creative way. Note however that "unblockable" got replaced by "can't be blocked". Also, with the very conditional unblockability, this might have been a common, as Looter il-Kor.

    Quote from FreshMeat »

RW, T: Deal 1 damage to target creature, then regenerate it.
"Relax, I've removed dozens of arrows in my career, the best way out is always through."
    2/2

At first I didn't get how this card would fulfill the challenge, until I read the flavor text. Good idea! Regeneration is a bit awkward in these colors, but a quick search implies that it is still tertiary in white, so that's okay (there even exists a very similar card in Gore Vassal). However, the wording should probably be something like "Boros Battlemedic deals 1 damage to target creature. Then, if that creature is still on the battlefield, regenerate it."

    Quote from Hemlock »
    Raging Charge 1R
    Instant (U)
If you control a mountain, you may cast Raging Charge without paying its mana cost.
Target creature you control gets +4/+0 and trample until the end of turn. At the end of turn, sacrifice that creature if you didn't pay Raging Charge's mana cost.
"The best way out is always through, specially if you can take the concussions"

I don't know what to think about this card. On the hand I like it because it's so strong, on the other hand it's probably too strong, since players will almost always try to cast it for free. Also, wizards officially don't want to do such zero cost spells anymore, so this card probably wouldn't see print. Other than that, this card fits well into red and has about the right casting cost.

    Quote from Piar »
    Crashing Baloth 3GG
    Creature - Beast (R)
    Trample
Crashing Baloth must be blocked if able and can't be blocked by more than one creature.
"Cornered beasts know that the best way out is always through." - Garruk
    5/5

I think this card seems a bit undercosted, maybe 4GG or 2GGG might have fit a little bit better. I also think it's a bit unexciting for five mana, but other than that, I have no real complaints.

    Creature - Minotaur Shaman (MR)
    Haste, intimidate
When Mogis's Hierophant enters the battlefield, each opponent sacrifices X permanents, where X is your devotion to red and to black. (Each R and B in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to red and to black.)

According to my MSE, this juuuust fits onto the card (with M15 border!):

    Twisted Conscription UBBR
    Sorcery (MR)
Each player reveals his or her hand. For each player, you may put a creature card with converted mana cost 6 or less from that player's hand onto the battlefield under your control. Those creatures gain haste until end of turn. Return them to their owners' hands at the beginning of the next end step.

doomfish: Nice, clean and efficient. I like it.
netn10: Ooooh, that's one juicy mythic! Has lots of potential, good card!
Tilwin Interesting card, but the colors seem to be off. I'd say, this should have been XWG (see Ajani, Mentor of Heroes) with exiling instead of sacrificing.
scrad_the_wanderer: Giving planeswalkers new abilities is intersting, but I'm not sure if it fits an uncommon. Maybe something similar could be done a rare.
Jimmy Groove: I get the flavor on this one, but I don't think that this is something BW would ever really get since it's eseentially a fog every turn, which is usually green. Also, exiling my precious planeswalkers? D:
bravelion83: I like the idea, although it seems a little bit weak. Flavor is okay on this one.

posted a message on Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
I think Sword of Fire and Ice isn't that good in here, since it gives the equipped creature protection from blue, which doesn't allow you to target it with Shun Yu's ability unless you unequip it... the only viable sword might be Sword of Feast and Famine, because the other swords give unfavorable protections (although that really depends on the choice of the cards).
Did you consider Bonesplitter, Darksteel Axe, Silver-Inlaid Dagger and Steelshaper's Gift? Each is a cheap noncreature spell, and the three equipments have a good boost and low equipment cost. Another possible addition might be Masterwork of Ingenuity.
Also, View from Above could be a nice self-recurring prowess trigger.

I fear the mana base of this deck. Three different colours, AND one wants to activate a (R/W)(R/W) abiity each turn? Time to finally get all those good lands...

posted a message on Best Commander(s) for Running Eldrazi
I have a Kruphix deck that uses all Eldrazis, and it's great! You just have to pack lots of mana dorks and cheap ramp like Utopia Sprawl to cast Kruphix early, then wait a turn and stack up mana, then cast Kozilek or Ulamog. You can backup your strategy with various counterspells. You don't even need any tutors, just play X-spells like Blue Sun's Zenith to draw into them. If you want to know what it could look like, here's my decklist: http://deckstats.net/decks/15631/86243-kruphix-god-of-eldrazis?saved=1&lng=de

I have yet to draw it and I don't know if it is viable (the high cmc hurts it a lot), but Dismiss into Dream seems fun. I really like your decklist, guess I'll have to get this Grin
    Some questions though:
Why isn't Grave Titan in the list? Does he draw too much aggression?
And what is your opinion towards Gnawing Zombie and that new Gray Merchant of Asphodel from Theros (see here)? I think especially the merchant is of interest, as it doesn't seem to be that hard to get a high devotion count in this deck with stuff like Nether Traitor, Bloodghast and Dark Prophecy.

posted a message on Astral Ink-Treader EDH
I thought a while about Ink-Treader as a general, and I guess that mass token producers like Alliance of Arms and Increasing Devotion are very good to sustain his ability. Stuff like a radiated Fiery Gambit (which has exactly one target as you cast it) gets suddenly much better (you don't even have to deal 3 dmg to your creature - just flip again!). Spiritualize lets you capitalize on other people's attacks. Vanish into Memory becomes a mass card draw. Aether Mutation becomes plain silly. Prophetic Bolt lets you scry your library (although it kills the nephilim)). Shining Shoal could get weird. Withstand nullifies a board wipe.
There's a lot of fun stuff to do with the nephilim Grin

posted a message on Tamanoa the Spellvamp
    Hi there,
I'm new here and would like to present you one of my more hilarious decks - hope you enjoy it!

    Tamanoa the Spellvamp

So - what is this deck about?
Well, it's all about Tamanoa's unique ability to transform your average Earthquake into a bombastic Exsanguinate and abusing the enormous amount of life that comes with it, with cards like Storm Herd.
Think of it: You can even use all that fun noncreature stuff no one in your playgroup has ever heard of - for example Lightmine Field, Repercussion, Overabundance and Vicious Shadows - and Tamanoa makes it even funnier!
It should be noted, though, that Tamanoa is not legendary, but I guess people who won't let you play with her as general are just wasting their time if they play Commander.
This deck was inspired by a very similar deck on mtgcommander.net, unfortunately I can't link to it at the moment because the site is down Frown

    The Deck
Let's now move to the deck itself (numbers in front of the card are the converted mana cost):

    Card Choices
By browsing through the decklist you might notice that I run *very* low on artifact and enchantment hate. Well, this is one of the reasons why this deck is a pure multiplayer deck: most times the other players take care of the dangerous noncreature permanents, I don't have to do a thing. Besides, my friends don't own and/or play the dangerous cards like Smokestack because those cards are boring (hey, Commander is a casual format! It's about fun!). Because countermagic is boring, too, I don't need protection against that^^
You should also note that this deck is more or less a budget deck - I would love to include cards like Rolling Earthquake or dual- and fetchlands, but I don't want to spend that much money just for one card. I didn't even buy the expensive cards from this, I got them through trading or drawing from boosters.
    Now, some card choices:

    The BOOM spells:
I think most cards in here are fairly self-explanatory: cast them, wipe the board and watch your oppnents' life totals shrink. If Tamanoa and a mana doubler are out, you will most times gain 100+ life and won't have to worry about being attacked while you're waiting to cast your next devastating spell.
The inclusion of Disaster Radius might be questionnable but it only hurts your opponents' creatures and most of the creatures have a high CMC, so I put it in.
Rupture also isn't that obvious, because I run only a few creatures, but sacrificing a 30/30 Phytohydra is fun Grin
Note that Mana Barbs (and Overabundance and the pain lands) won't hurt you at all if Tamanoa is in play!

    Double the pain!:
I admit that copying a Blasphemous Act isn't very useful because most cratures can't even withstand the first one, but doubling an Earthquake is very fun Grin (remember that the X value gets copied, too!).
For the moment, Coalhauler Swine is in here because I couldn't find anything better, but it isn't that bad - at least, it's a one-time-Repercussion. And Repercussion hurts always.

    More energy!:
You might wonder why I use mana doublers instead of ramp - well, I didn't want to do ANOTHER deck that uses green to search for lands, so I took the mana doublers Grin
Most times I can save Keeper of Progenitus from being destroyed by my own spells, and almost nobody does any harm to him, Mana Flare and Heartbeat of Spring because they profit from them.
Overabundance always paints a target on you, but if you play Tamanoa you just can't leave this one out Grin

    Mmmmm.... your life tastes good!:
These are the cards that make use of the life you sucked from your enemies.
Ajani Goldmane replaces Serra Avatar until I can get one.
Cradle of Vitality has a nice synergy with Fertilid and allows my to build a defense.
Moltensteel Dragon onehits players if you pump 72 life into it (which isn't an issue in this deck).
Well of Lost Dreams can draw you ridiculous amounts of cards.
Storm Herd wins the game for you if the nobody has a wrath in his hands.

The shields against the BOOM spells:
These cards are here to protect your creatures from your own spells, they are mostly auto-includes.

    The Defense:
The vows are here to deal with those pesky indestructible creatures or creatures that can evade my spells in another way.
Privileged Position should help against spot removal, and the Hydras and the Ooze are there to block creatures like those mentionend above.

    Utility:
Hull Breach: my only artifact/enchantment removal, helps everytime ^^
Fertilid: Provides nice synergy with Vigor and Cradle of Vitality
Past in Flames: Recycles all those nice spells in your graveyard Smile
    Mind's Eye: Good card draw
Soul's Majesty: Target that Phytohydra, profit.
    Vedalken Orrery: Instant Earthquake? Thanks!

Cards that will be added as soon as I get them:
    - Serra Avatar
    - Magmaquake
    - Darksteel Plate

So, what's you opinion on this deck? Do you have any suggestions for other cards I could have missed?

posted a message on Whoo! Hi!
    Hi all,
I've been reading the forum for a while now, especially the Commander forum and the Rumor Mill, and finally decided to sign up and post on my own!
    About me:
I've been playing Magic since Ravnica came out, and I can't await the return to this coolest plane ever. Most times I play EDH/Commander or casual magic with my friends. Which is, in my opinion, a lot more fun and flavorful than competitive Magic.
Oh and I'm currently doing my bachelor in mathematics (yay!).
Interseting fact: I discovered that almost all math students on my university either have been playing Magic themselves or have played it with their brother/sister/friends - I've never seen such a high density of magic players anywhere before in my life (well, probably not that hard, as I'm from a veeeeery small village^^).

So, see you around here Smile
    Cheers
    nanonashorn

P.S: My name is a mix of the Greek word "nano", which means "dwarf", and the German word "Nashorn", which means "rhinoceros". I've been using this name throughout the internet, and I like it a lot Smile
