The MTG community is full of kleptomaniacs. We attract some of the worst people to the gaming hobby.
It's more a case of 'opportunity makes a thief'. Valuable cards are close to as good as money, easily pocketable and often laying on a table. You wouldn't leave money like this.
BZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTT! Wrong!
MTG attracts collectors, collectors are opportunistic creatures. Kleptomaniacs are often collectors as well. An entire community of collectors is going to be very attractive to a kleptomaniac. Hence, MTG has a higher than normal ratio of scumbag kleptos.
Same people who buy a single lottery ticket, are the ones buying single booster packs. They know the odds are wet garbage...but there's still a chance to pull a shiny masterpiece.
WOTC literally has to pander to the same gambling instincts and addictions found in the scratch card lottery to get there packs to move....
You're acting like gambling instincts and the TCG business model are new bedfellows. They're not. The rush of maybe getting lucky lies at the core of how TCGs make money, and it always has. I'm willing to admit that I enjoy that kind of rush, which is part of the reason I play limited, and, for people who don't, there's the singles market and LCGs.
Yes, there has always been a gambling aspect in MTG, but WOTC has ramped it up more and more. First with the addition of 'mythics' and now with special lottery cards like the Zendikar Lands, and the Masterpieces. They're becoming less dependent on making a good sustainable product, and more dependent on triggering deep rooted gambling problems.
If an LGS is currently having issues getting events to fire in the current Standard scene....do you think Ahmonket even has a ghost of a chance of reviving them?
Standard attendance has been down in the *****ter since Kaladesh, everyone is sick of seeing the same Mardu Vehicle deck every week with almost every opponent. Now FNMs are having trouble firing (first time seeing this in years at this place), even if Ahmonket is amazing, do you think it would be enough to revitalize the disinterested current player base? This is the 2nd massive community participation drop in recent memory, will the community go for 3 before giving up totally?
Seems like WOTC is giving up supporting Modern, barely support CMD, given up on really supporting Eternal.....all they care about is standard, and are doing a pretty weak job at that!
At your LGS, maybe. Try to avoid blanket statements like this--it doesn't do much to reinforce the validity of your argument.
What an awesome non-reply. Didn't even attempt to formulate a real response! Bravo!

Rat's Nest from Betrayer's of Kamigawa(decent deck that had Umezawa's Jitte in it), Elvish Rage (one of the best tribal theme decks I can remember) from Legions both come to mind.
The last set that I thought was "good" in terms of fulfilling all the hype I had for it was the first Innistrad Block. Before that and we have to go all the way back to the first Ravnica block. Further back? ....probably Legions.
You need statistics for common sense? Geeze man....I dunno....
