I'll try it for next month's tournament Smile

Sorry, Idk, he seemed really interested, I'd say just wait a few days, if there's no reply by the time we have 3 Top 4 players, then we'll have to drop him,

I began a training course this week that is far more demanding than foreseen. I'll have some time this weekend but won't be back on a regular schedule until Nov 2. If that's too slow then just sideline me until the next time.

I made a similar shout out to vintage players awhile ago but received no interest. Don't know if there's enough players out there to carry through a tournament, but I'm game all the same. I'll PM you this weekend after the work week dies down.

Ebay is just as bad but with older games, some people seem to think that just because a game/system/peripheral it old it must be valuable

Can I get a witness! I've been searching of late for an old NES console to hook up for the neighborhood kids, but sellers seem to have a high degree of nostalgia infused into these machines, which translates into high $$$.

Better to have it rot in the closet than turn a profit on your childhood memories...

What I see on the available footage thus far is Boston police, some soldiers in ACUs, and several civilian bystanders going directly into the source of the blast.

    That says it all.

These are the people who will run headlong into uncertainty without enough protection, without enough pay, and often without enough praise. No matter what violence comes, they will always be there.

Just because the developer isn't working on the software anymore that doesn't mean that the program can't be used anymore. There is a perfectly good server running on woogerworks.com that's been up and running for a while now. And if that goes down, anyone else can run the server software on their own server with ease.

This is why I'm glad Cockatrice wasn't developed as a web-based app as it would've likely lost all functionality after receiving a C&D. Although I wonder if new development might feel pressure to be more web-friendly due to growing adoption of smart phones and mobile internet.

Anybody looking to playtest your latest vintage idea? PM me and we'll work out a time. Casual, no pressure gameplay.

I've been developing some 'old frames' only ideas and I'm curious how competitive they can get vs. the latest game mechanics. I haven't learned all of the current card abilities, so show me something new.

It's too bad these cases tend to be decided on access to financial resources, rather than the legal merits of the case.

Always a good reason to contribute on the cockatrice.de site. Opensource is just like public radio, desperate for some financial love from its users.

Is anyone considering to do development work on a re-made Cockatrice? Would that necessitate doing such work from a country outside the strike zone of Hasbro?

Only version I know of would be the KMC Character Guard sleeves.

I know there are +67mm soft sleeves out there as I've got a quite few in my random pile. Question is how to determine someone specific that's making them?

Seems Cockatrice will no longer continue in its current form based on the latest word from Brukie:

Hasbro's lawyers have stated that they regard the case as over assuming I stick to the declaration of cease and desist that I had signed before. According to their latest letter, there will be no further consequences. However, when I asked whether I could publicise their letters, there was no reply, and I assume there won't be any. Long story short, the main point of the declaration is: I may not copy, distribute or use for advertisement any copyrighted visual representation related to MTG. As you know, I've never done any of that myself (except for some screenshots in the downloads section), but as their exemplary screenshots show parts of the Cockatrice UI with MTG card pictures in it for the most part, what they mean is probably that I should not distribute this software any more. The immediate consequences are as follows:

I'm looking for someone else to take over this project and modify it to be a general purpose card playing program. Cockatrice was never meant to infringe any copyrights, and I'm certain it can be made that way. The code contains very few MTG-specific bits, and throwing away the whole code because of those bits is not the way to go. I will be happy to assist with development of a non-infringing software based of Cockatrice once a new project leader is found.
I had to pay attorney fees in the amount of € 911.80 (about $1200). As many of you have expressed a wish to help me in this regard, I've added the donate button again. Any donations are greatly appreciated.

As such, how should a revised version of the program be developed in order to satisfy generic CCG requirements? And what to call if for that matter?

Considering the times we exist in, it almost seems a non-starter that new software will be web-deployed in order to maximize connectivity and user-base. Sites like Deckstats and TappedOut already have rudimentary deckbuilding and testing features, and it's so much easier to organize online play with an integrated user system. However, outright recreating MTGO is certainly not feasible and would be squashed by the corporate Hasbro hammer. So is there some space in between for a new generic Cockatrice to occupy, or is the installed app/private server model still the best way to go for an opensource solution to thrive?

ALSO: Be a mensch and donate towards new development on the Cockatrice.de site.

I'm having trouble figuring where to get some decent quality penny sleeves which will be +67mm wide. I have a heap of never used clear KMC sleeves that I plan on using to store a few complete sets, and I found that some penny sleeves are wide enough to sleeve over as double.

The standard Ultra Pro soft penny sleeves are advertised at 2 5/8 inches wide, which is only 66.675 mm. I've heard their widths may vary from pack to pack, but how can I find soft sleeves which will be at least 67.5mm wide? Any alternate suggestions?

Here's some examples of the KMC / Penny combo:

I wonder why Magic doesn't do it's own "free" mode with MTGO, and just let people create infinite decks but you just can't join money tournaments with them (basically the same as Cockatrice). Perhaps even go a step further and allow for "free" sealed/draft tournaments (with no prizes obviously) to let people that want to practice for the real thing do so. They wouldn't make money strictly from people that use said mode... but you would give people the same ability to playtest (and then buy the cards they they want to buy when they are done), and also because it's on MTGO and not a nuetral party, there's opportunity for ads and just the fact that they are on MTGO at all means they are more likely to buy stuff from Bots for their first real deck or w/e.

Also... a factor that I don't think gets that much mention is...... oh my god think of how many new players would try this new game for free and learn how to play magic, and then eventually buy cards once they feel confident enough to play. And the most important thing about this is they are playing on a system that for the most part doesn't let them develop misconceptions about the rules. Stuff about targeting, timing, attacking, blocking, w/e. It's all there.

It's basically like "free to play" modes in other MMORPGs that let you demo the game. And for the most part it's a proven system.

A very sound concept, but likely too sensible for Wizards to implement. I agree that Hasbro is the primary villain in this case, but when a substantial business concern like WotC with more than adequate resources and financing allows an unpaid freelance team to develop a superior product versus their official digital play platform, then they are inviting their own decline.

I use OCTGN. It takes a bit to setup but I like the search feature a lot and then can go play against some one online.

Never used OCTGN, how far were you able to take the integration of MTG? Able to use actual card images from gatherer or just proxy icons of some kind?

Just more fuel on the fire to stay away from Wizards products. It's interesting that user enmity as someone here called it will no longer register as a metric on their bottom line. But why should it be when your product is being pushed in every Walmart across the land?

I can see that there have been some interesting new game dynamics arrive over the past years, but the scheming that happens at the high end of the business only infects downward. EDH and Legacy seem to be the best insulation available from all that nonsense, so I'll stick with that. I've little doubt that Cockatrice will find the legs it needs to continue operations elsewhere on the net if need be.

And the moral of the story: Next time you are considering to spend your hard earned $$$, €€€, or ¥¥¥ on a Wizards product... make a donation to Cockatrice development team instead.
