  • posted a message on Permanents with the same name
Whenever a card refers to itself by name, it always means "this permanent". The exception is whenever the card text reads "card named ____", in which case it refers to cards that have the name in question.

Yep, but you probably won't be able to cast Unburial Rites due to not having legal targets.

Ground Seal stops Snapcaster's ability from targeting an instant or sorcery in the grave (for example), but it won't stop you from casting a spell from the grave should you have the ability to do so (say from Yawg's Will).

It would fizzle - said permanent is not a "nonblack creature", which is the targeting restriction for Doom Blade. The Blade would be countered on resolution for having no legal targets.

Thalia has a 2/1 First Strike body on her, which means she can deal damage and block to protect your life total as need be. Plus, for Shaman builds, she is tutorable that way. Thorn of Amethyst provides no clock whatsoever, and should be a supplement to Thalia, not the other way around. Also, Thorn is actively bad in the mirror since you're playing fewer creatures and this is effectively creature-based aggro-midrange.

This assumes that you are always going to draw your singleton of Thalia, that Mother of Runes won't eat removal, and that you get a Cavern as well. Against a goldfish, this may be doable, but when matches are played against intelligent opponents who are privy to what your deck seeks to do and have the means to interact with it, it is a far different question. Also, Wasteland is a big thing in the format against nonbasic lands.

Swords to Plowshares is commonplace, FoW, Daze, and Spell Snare are all things, Lightning Bolt and its ilk munch on her. In short, creature removal is very commonplace, so having backups is a very good thing, and you really want to draw her, as she shuts down a lot of decks (Storm, for example, probably can't win with a Thalia in play).

You can. Trample rules state that the amount of damage I described is the minimum that you may assign. You may assign more if you'd like (say, you want to make sure your opponent's Gisela gets nice and dead).

I think that it's too good for the cost. Diabolic Edict is :1mana::symb: and Essence Scatter is :1mana::symu:. As this is putting both effects together and on one card, I feel that increasing the mana cost to 2UB is prudent. The fact that you must have a creature spell to target to use it makes it more restrictive, which is why I go here instead of to 3UB (as the fact you only need to use one card has to weigh in as well).

You will get trampled for one point of (poison) damage, but your Fog Bank will emerge without harm. Trample rules state that you must assign lethal damage, defined as damage equal to the toughness of the blocker minus damage already marked on the creature (or one damage from a source with deathtouch).

The fact that the damage will be prevented by Fog Bank's ability does not change how the trample will work.

If you animate your Inkmoth Nexus and make it a creature, it will be affected by Gideon Jura's ability. Gideon Jura's ability creates a blanket effect that modifies all creatures controlled by the targeted player, including those that were not creatures when Gideon's ability resolved or those that were not on the battlefield at the time.

    Quote from Cyan
To be honest, I don't understand the appeal of the Libertarian party. Not enough government is just as bad as too much government. If a Libertarian ever got elected, I feel like corporations would just trample all over everyone even more than they do now.

I would take this point one step further. The government is at least in theory beholden to the people. Sure, a lot of people are sheep and can be bent with the right words and talking points, but at least on the surface, the government has to be mindful of what the people want, and if that includes change, there has to be at least superficial "reforms".

Corporations don't have even this much going for them. They are legally beholden to maximize profit at all expense or risk shareholder lawsuits. Without a well managed government to keep them in check, I see the corporations becoming the state (if they aren't already). I guess at least corporations are honest in stating that they're only out for themselves.

    Walking Desecration

If you use the ability on your turn, your creatures that have the specified creature type will have to attack. If you use it on an opponent's turn, his/her creatures do, unless they are unable (due to summoning sickness, being tapped, having defender, etc.).

As of March or so, I believe. But as you can clearly tell, I'm a n00b here, so it's not something I know decisively. I do know that there's an announcement pretty clearly posted in the Standard subforum with more information.

I don't see how the flash really helps with this, since modes are already chosen as part of casting the spell. Also, I'm not sure how this would work with something like Deceiver Exarch - after you choose the mode, your opponent then chooses the target?

  • posted a message on price of Shock Lands
They will probably be 12-15 while in Standard and then 8-10 post rotation. Unlike the fetchlands, RTR is going to be opened significantly less than Zendikar (about 20-25% less) due to the Large-Large-Small set and the prevalence of always drafting the "suggested" mix. Coupled with the continued rise of EDH and a growing Modern crowd, and I think you will find that demand is somewhat more elastic than one might expect - that is, there will be a lot of shocks that go into EDH decks and cubes and the like that won't make it into the secondary market.

However, ultimately, it's a question of speculation at this point, and I feel that the price decline will be lower than expected. Just my $0.02, but I would not bank on getting $10 shocks for awhile.
