posted a message on Coalition Victory
"Interacts poorly with the format" means that a card behaves differently due to the special rules of Commander. We have already seen this with Worldfire, a nine mana spell that requires no additional effort beyond having mana and access to your general - which is the exact same prerequisite as Coalition Victory. Do you have a bunch of mana? Do you have your general? Did the spell resolve? Congratulations, you just won the game.

There are currently 15 dual lands and 5 fast fetches that are relatively cheap. There are another 7 slow fetches that all tutor basic lands types into play. So the argument of requiring work to build a mana base which isn't very difficult or expensive. Nor is casting a creature which costs 5 mana.

And for the "not just going to throw it in" and "bad Tooth and Nail" comments, I ask why. It takes up exactly one slot in your deck and wins the game instantly. Tooth and Nail requires more mana and at a minimum two additional deck slots. So why would you choose to not run CV, or why.why would you choose to run TaN over CV?

Energy was pretty fun. In the two headed giant tournament my daughter got to drop an Aetherwind Basker and then swing next turn with it as a 20/20. I also got to boost a Multiform Wonder to one-shot proportions thanks to a pair of Highspire Infusions.

Maybe I missed it, but has anyone addressed the fact that unlike "other combo cards", CV doesn't require any additional support? You could quite literally take any random card out of a 5C deck, replace it with CV, and you have a game winning "combo". This is the problem with the card. It's getting looked at as comparison to worse "I win" combo cards, but the real problem is that it interacts poorly with the format.

posted a message on Ban List Update - January 2017
    Link to Official Announcement

    NO CHANGES

Sheldon's piece on the state of the format a couple weeks ago probably gave away this update. As he says, the format is in a healthy place, and we don't see a need to make changes.

Some folks have talked about a preemptive banning of Paradox Engine, but we won't do that. Every card - even Griselbrand - gets to be legal for at least a little while, as we prefer to look at actual play in casual settings over theory. I'll note that the last time we saw this much speculation about a preemptive ban was Shaman of Forgotten Ways, and that card turned out just fine.

Wizards has adopted a new ban schedule that features an additional window five weeks out. To maintain the parallel, we will also make short announcements then, but we do not expect to make changes during those windows except in the unlikely event of an emergency.

We may make small changes to the format philosophy page in the coming weeks. There's no change in the philosophy itself, but it's been a few years since we updated it, and there are bits we feel might be expressed more clearly. So, we're planning to take an active look at it to see what might be improved.

Aether Revolt brings a bunch of new toys (and a Legendary Monkey token!) to the party. Have fun brewing, and embrace the chaos.

I feel much differently than some of you do, about this set and about the prereleases. I love prereleases personally. They tend to be fun and not super-competitive, and the only formats I play other than EDH are various forms of limited (sealed, draft, etc.)

From two prereleases and two sets of prize packs, I snagged a promo Paradox Engine and a promo Heroic Intervention, two other copies of Paradox Engine (one foil), a Restoration Specialist, three copies of Renegade Rallier two copies each of Battle at the Bridge, Efficient Construction and Whir of Invention, four copies of Resourceful Return, Kari Zev's Expertise, Release the Gremlins, and a foil Rishkar, Peema Renegade. I consider all of those to be potentially playable EDH cards. The Restoration Specialist and Heroic Intervention have gone directly into decks already, I expect Rishkar might find his way into Atraxa, and I am considering which of my decks would most benefit from a Paradox Engine (Rhys the Redeemed is a given). The Rallier is great - put him down after saccing a fetchland or Strip Mine or something like that and get it right back into play. I also got Kari Zev and the new Tezzeret, but immediately traded them and a few other things I just got on Puca Trade.

If one is playing really competitive EDH, then yeah, new sets are going to offer very few cards you're going to want, and the likelihood of you getting one at a prerelease is very slim (I have no explanation for my luck in snagging three copies of Paradox Engine). But if you're playing a less competitive version, I think this set and Kaladesh have both offered a lot of interesting stuff. Maybe not "best of the best," which is a hard standard to meet when you are comparing new cards to everything that's ever been released in the history of the game and isn't already on the banned list, but still playable.

If I were able to pull any sort of value from my packs then I would feel differently. I don't mean "Oh man I pulled double inventions and a foil Fatal Push", but at least getting something to lessen the cost of playing. But every single time I go to one I pull absolute crap while the people next to me can pay for the entire table's entry with their packs. Couple that with going 0-4 and I just cement the mentality that I should be supporting Wizards by supporting the secondary market.

This is exactly how I feel.

Despite the impressive prize support I received for placing 3rd out of 71 players, I felt as though it wasn't worth my money whatsoever. Sets like Aether Revolt just aren't designed for Commander; they're designed for limited, and they're designed for Standard. I don't play Limited, and I don't play Standard, so why would I ever purchase your product Wizards? Sure, your sets are spiced with a few Commander playable cards here and there, but if I want those, I will just buy the singles. I'm not going to shred my wallet opening dozens of booster packs hoping to get the one, inexpensive card that I need. As Commander's popularity grows, I suspect more and more players will feel the way I do, that sets designed for Standard and Limited are unsatisfying for Commander players and lack a compelling reason to be purchased.

Or even worse, they will design more cards that will be "good" for the format.

Quick question about PucaTrade. If list that I want 4 copies of a card, will other traders still be able to send less than 4 copies of that card to me, or will Puca not let them send less than that amount? I've only had 1 instance where more than 1 copy of a card was sent to me since they've implemented that feature and I only asked for 2 copies of the card at that time nor have I had any cards worth sending out, so I haven't been able to test this.

Yes, you can still send out multiple copies. I've noticed that it doesn't do it automatically so perhaps that is part of the reason you get one copy (or perhaps they only have the one copy).

    Sheldon,

Lou summed it up perfectly: you are our MaRo. You may not have created the format, and you are only one of the people in charge of it, but you are the face and mouthpiece of it (as you knoe). So when you run Hermit Druid in Karador because it's value, the people who encounter Druid in LabMan decks complain that you won't ban it because you run it, or that your playgroup decided Hulk was still too strong which is why it's still banned. And of course this is nothing new, and of course these same people conveniently ignore every time you've said you love Recurring Nightmare and Primeval Titan.

And truthfully, there isn't anything you can do about people who hold onto half formed opinions, so I don't really know how to address it. Although I think Sol Ring loosely falls into this category as a "pet card" of threads RC despite how broken it is.

To speak on the balance issue, I think that the goal of the ban list should be "public balance", rather than competitive balance. In other words, spikes are still gonna spike so trying to balance the game around them is a folly, but the game is huge now and playing public games in an LGS where it isn't realistic to expect everyone to have discussions and agree on the type of game they'd like and house bans. So for me, "balance" is trying to figure out what types of games you guys would enjoy against random strangers would be if the only pregame talk was "hey want to play some edh?"

So I says to some stranger I says "Hey man, lemme bum a deck." And this big dude, tatted neck to nuts, says "Aight man pick one." and pulls out these big boxes. So I'm a gambler, and I randomly choose the orange sleeves. Mono black.

First round is this 12 year old who plays boggle something, can't be the target of such and such. I roll that dudes face with Gurmag Angler cause ****in why not, a big fish.

Second guy is the tatted motorcycle guy the loaned me the deck. RDW? In pauper? Five minutes later I'm in the middle of a smoke break after that 5 minute *****storm of a match. Wondering why I'm here, what's the whole thing mean, what the **** man whys that ***** in PAUPER???

Match three win the first game on a nut draw. Narrowly lose the second because this first year law student decides he's gonna sac, draw, sac, draw, sac, draw, oh there's Metalcraft gg. Lost 2-1.

Let's just be perfectly clear here. OP, you're not talking about altering a card in a traditional sense (painting the car to make it unique), you're talking about straight up counterfeiting a card which is illegal and will get you ejected from every official event you play in (excluding proxy vintage). Also, if you are advocating that people do that, you should know that doing so is against site rules.

True, but CV can be jammed into quite literally any 5c deck, and if it resolves you probably just won the game. Doomsday requires 4-5 cards to make it work, and has opportunities for disruption after the spell resolves.

Without desiring to trudge through a thousand pages of discussion - anyone know why doomsday isn't banned? It seems like the sort of card that can ONLY be used for degenerate purposes. At least with HD and ad nauseum and stuff like that you have some argument that they're playable legitimately. I guess the banlist is for stuff that can be used fairly but always gravitates toward unfairness, whereas doomsday you basically have to start with unfairness?

Idk it seems weird that it's never been banned to me, and I don't even see much discussion about it. There's essentially no fun way to use the card, it's basically the same as coalition victory where it's just a boring i-win button that serves no other purpose.

You said it yourself: It's pretty much ONLY a boring I-win card with degenerate use only (not counting the hilarity of Hind Mind shenanigans. As far as I know, the RC isn't worried too much any more about those types of cards.

My apologies for lack of clarity. I never went up against more than one Leovold in a given game back when people were running him locally, but for a few weeks there it seemed like almost every game I played, someone was not only running a Leovold deck, but was running essentially the very same Leovold deck, which included every mass draw spell and Windfall variant in the game, resulting in the Leo player having a huge grip of cards while everyone else got one card and kept having to discard their hands repeatedly. That got old really quick. Not to say Leovold is any worse than a number of other ridiculously strong commanders (Derevi, Arcum, Zur, etc.), but that particular build doesn't lend itself to games that the typical group of Commander players finds very fun... which people figured out soon enough, apparently, based on the observed absence of Leovold during last Monday's session. I'm hoping that will be the case again when I play this Monday.

Luckily that bug barely caught on in my group. One guy built the deck and retired it after the first game, and another one may still have the deck but doesn't play it. I picked up a copy of him, but it's going in my cube.

Any chance you could explain this discord business as though I was your grandma and had no clue what it was? Is it a website? An app? I really don't get it lol

It's a chat server (website and phone app). Looks like an entity sets something up with channels and you sign in through a particular network. Try this link. It's free to sign up. That link is the channel where we spam each other with links to our profile. It that doesn't work, at the bottom of every PucaTrade article will be a "discuss this article here (Discord logo)". Click on it, sign up, and it should direct you to the #articles channel. Look for #trades-paper channel. The consistent thing I've noticed is that like pongie noticed, a lot of people are trying to get fairly even reciprocal sends, and people there tend to want users to have an avatar for some reason. If you're just looking to cash out you may be disappointed, but if you're trying to get back to how PucaTrade used to be (#MakePucaGreatAgain), with some persistence you'll get some trades... probably. Hard to say as everyone will have a different experience. I'm getting some stuff in slowly, but I'm also trying to be pretty friendly and chatty there to build up my presence and image as well. No one is rushing in to zero me out, which I highly doubt will happen, but if I can at least start getting points fluctuations I'll be happy.

Well on a whim I decided to jump onto their Discord server, to the trades channel. Started chatting a bit and ended up getting two people sending me stuff. More of a "welcome to the Discord channel, don't lose faith" gesture, but it was still a very nice gesture all the same. I'll be reciprocating as best I can, and it certainly makes me feel better about the site.

I imagine most people know what Atraxa does since she was released barely over a month ago, but I'll card tag her so your life is just a tad more convenient.

Well card tags are actually one of the basic requirements for a primer, if you were planning on going that route. So even if another user hadn't brought it up the Primer Committee would have. One of the keys of a successful primer is that it includes everything a reader might need to know, under the assumption that the reader doesn't know what a card does.

I think the current state of the site demonstrates that they did not have a good plan, even if they did have good intentions. My biggest concern during the good times was that the site was financially unsustainable, and as behind the scenes info like paying writers and even full time tech positions in pucapoints surfaced it's become increasingly obvious that's the case. They spent tens of thousands of dollars of other peoples' money on the Future Site overhaul, but didn't address issues like inflation and bounties until the site was dying and didn't really fix either. Not to mention driving off most of the power senders by banning pucapoint sales. I for one think the current leadership is too set on their idea of what they want the site to be to realize that it isn't working out and taking a radically different approach is the only way to turn things around. I've been hoping to get proven wrong for about a year now.

Well I didn't realize that they were paying their staff in PucaPoints rather than delicious Trident Layers gum.that makes more sense why they were trying so hard to "remove" points from the system, and using those points in less visible ways.

Do you guys think a leadership change could turn things around? Obviously the new head would have to make some substantive changes to the site after taking over, but would Freytag stepping down restore public confidence or is the death spiral irreversible at this point?

I don't think that it is so much an issue of leadership, it's an issue of their vision. They had a good plan, it's just that their execution went downhill when they tried to make too many improvements all at once and were too aggressive at removing points from the system. Eric and the others have shown that they are serious about the site and have put time, effort, and money into it. So it isn't that they need to be removed, it's that they need to actually listen to the users complaints.

If you convinced your local group to house rule Partner as a new EDH rule on any general, which two legendary creatures would you partner up to lead your deck?

In my league recently we had to implement a Dookie for infinite combos because the number players complaining about it has been steadily increasing. By their own word, "it's a Cold War and you'll have to make us stop". As a player who considers himself capable of self-restraint and not running something just because it's good, this mentality frustrates me. So my question is, was this something you or BKM ever experienced in your leagues? How did you address the concern?

For my recurring nightmare of a question, why don't you want me to have fun?

I want to get my mom a nice bottle of riesling bUT the extent of my wine knowledge is that I'm pretty sure they come from grapes. What can you suggest for under $100? (Feel free to answer this before Xmas :D)

Regardless of power level I think Sol Ring has been grandfathered in and should be exempt from banning by virtue of it being Sol Ring.

This is a bad arguments. No card should be exempt from the ban hammer. Yes, I think that just like Balance is probably the last card to come off the ban list Sol Ring is the last card to ever make the ban list, but regardless I think it is very poor format management if you are unwilling to even examine a card.

Thoughts? No indication of whether this will be a premium only thing, but it's a good way to not let people get ripped off (I still haven't received my promised bounty from 2 weeks ago from one member). If it was something that all members could engage in then it would help let the little guys stand out. Pretty steep price though, 10% to PT on top of whatever you throw in.

Why are you so convinced there's a mini game surrounding PT? Lotsa creatures get abused, Rune-Scarred Demon is one big example. It doesn't just apply to PT.

So why isn't Sol Ring a mini-game during turns 1-4, considering these turns are the most important in crafting your strategy out. Which, in turn, is arguably more pronounced than a PT situation because it happens way too early, too fast.

Well I'm "convinced" Because it's something I saw first hand. I've seen games where Player 1 casts PT and in a row Players 2-4 followed it up with a Clone effect. Where it ate removal only to be subsequently reanimated. Where the Bribery targets the Green player just to grab the PT they know is there. Where 5c decks run Urborg/Coffers simply because they run PT.

Can you say the same thing about Sol Ring? Sure, we've all seen Thada Adel make it her first target, but that's about it. Do people run Trinket Mage just for it? How many times will someone Commander a Sol Ring? Do you often think "better run Mental Misstep, gotta expect SR"?

Naturally, ymmv, but those are my experiences which I draw from.

Because, comparatively, I see much less Consecrated Sphinx anymore, or Palinchron, or Defense of the Heart, or Mind Over Matter, or Necropotence, or Armageddon, or Time Stretch, or Jhoira Decks, or Zur Decks, or Rafiq decks, or Oona decks, or Azami decks, or Azusa decks, or 5-color Hermit Druid decks. Sure, it's only my experience I'm drawing from, but it's the only experience I have. Cards and decks that I've seen dominate playgroups have consistently fallen out of favor because once they prove themselves successful, people look for a new challenge.

Sure, I can go with that. Cards that you solve or otherwise run a "correct way" can grow stale, especially in an experienced group like it sounds like you're in. I'll still contend that PT was different because there was nothing to solve, just solid ETB value and added value later on. It was also near broken from a CMC point of view. This is getting somewhat tangential though and starting to focus solely on PT. Bringing it back to Sol Ring, the similarities as I see it are that both cards provide an effect which is greater than its cmc, and both cards are/were ubiquitous. They also tended to subtly warp games unintentionally and it often is difficult to see them as the true culprit.

Ok, but if they kept running those things just by the argument that Primeval Titan is around, they'd start having problems when it stopped being played everywhere because people got bored and wanted to play with newer, shinier toys. Prime Time is a strong card, but it's not stronger than all the broken old crap, it's not new enough to be excitingly fresh, and it has the staleness of being a long-term competitive staple in another format already. Nobody is fighting for Prime Time because people don't particularly care to play it anymore.

Why would people stop playing it? It was some of the best ramp available, and it was for that reason that it was pkayed, not because it was broken or exciting. The only reason people aren't fighting for it now is because after being forced to remove it from their decks and seeing how games are now, they can see just how much of an impact it had and they are happier now. If Sol Ring were banned we would probably see the same result to a lesser amount, but not quite since Sol Ring doesn't get played like a mini-game as soon as someone plays it.

I would bet my entire magic collection that if any of those cards weren't banned, the problem would have solved itself, but not a single one of those escaped standard rotation before their bans. It's my belief that the primary motivation when choosing cards for the vast majority of people playing this format is what they want to play rather than what they feel is strongest, and cards definitely have a honeymoon period where they're new and exciting and copies are in everyone's trade binders, and that's long since gone for all those cards.

Ah, but you are forgetting that many players did not view Primeval Titan as a "problem". In fact, most people "solved" the problem by running more ways to capitalize on 100% of green decks running PT, be it theft, clones, reanimation, etc. So to liken it to Sol Ring, the answer to other players running Sol Ring is to run it harder? Doesn't sound like a solved problem.

And that is the problem with your assessment of warping the format. It doesn't just mean that a card is a known threat that has to be dealt with on the spot, it means that the card is so powerful and has so much of an impact on the game that EVERYONE is either running it or preparing for it during the deck-building stage, and once it is in play the game focuses on that card. Sol Ring doesn't quite fit this criteria because while it is ubiquitous, there is not much vocal evidence to suggest that players are filling their decks with answers to the card.

I think that is a flawed stance. It isn't strictly true that it adds nothing to the format, it just doesn't add much. Similarly, a blanket statement of "it ruins gsmes" isn't entirely true since this isn't always the case. Lastly, I know you are smart enough to know why the cards you listed aren't apples to apples since thrre are other reasons for their ban which don't apply to SR.

Lol so true when we've people who can't tell if it's a chicken or an egg.

See, you're doing it again. It sounds like you're referring to someone specifically. Are you intentionally vaugeposting?
I believe I was one of the early guys to term the word archenemy (not the format). That said, I still can't believe many people think fast mana isn't the problem here. It makes me feel that us anti-fast mana guys are in some kind of cult in the entire EDH section.

Well if you choose to identify yourself as a small minority of players who know better than the RC and know for a fact that fast mana is ruining the format, then yeah you probably are treated like a cult. Just like you guys think that your polar opposite drank the EDH kool-aid.
Fast mana bannings are always the first to go in any given format. History has backed that up, data has proven formats do better without them. And it doesn't matter if you're competitive or casual.

Sure. Every other format says "we don't want games to end before turn X" and uses data to reach that goal. And fast mana is always the first to go because the primary objective is to win faster than your opponent. That is the mentality players have in those formats. EDH doesn't have that mentality, and if you want data to back it up, go look in the decklist forum and tell me how many decks run Sol Ring AND Mana Crypt AND Mana Vault and whatever other rocks you consider broken. Heck, just look at the primers which are supposed to be some of the most developed lists.

So if you want to argue that a card like Sol Ring doesn't add to the format and has the potential to ruin a game here and there, I've got your back. But you seem to be taking this to an extreme and I have to disagree with your overall stance.

I don't remember who said it first, and a few people here have said as much, but if a card turns the game into Archenemy then that card should really be evaluated for its effect on the format. Obviously, "turns the game into archenemy" shouldn't be a BL criteria, but it is certainly an indicator.

Well, the moderators in Modern made an interesting choice and locked down the Banlist thread. Probably the right move given how toxic it was getting and apparently there was some silly fight in it using the report comment function.

While I enjoyed reading some of the constructive stuff that was written in there, the constant flame wars were getting out of hand and I'm glad they are trying to ensure that civil constructive conversation happens by moving it to a new thread with new rules.

Thank you for the kind words. Usually when we have to step in like that we get called Nazis and other things which our censor would edit.

Bolas, who are you asking, Blue or myself? Because if you're going to call out someone at least do it by name.

Anyway, if you're talking about me then it's like I said: the more the card got discussed here, the more I started paying attention to what was being said and mulling it over independently of the ban list or philosophy, and I started paying more attention to when it was played in my own games.

Tstorm, some of us do listen to turds like you :p We don't have to agree, but we listen. I admit that I used to be firmly in the camp of people who swore up and down that the card was harmless, but then I actually started listening to the people on the forum and observing my own games. And even though it is very rare that I see a game where I could retrace the cause to SR, I still have seen plenty of games where it just enough of a nudge. Of course, I also see plenty of games where that early game SR didn't make a whit of difference either. And then I thought about what SR means to me. And it doesn't mean much at all. It's a mana rock with no down side and vintage power level in a format that desperately wants to prove it isn't vintage despite sharing a card pool. The only plus side that's touted as far as I can tell is that it's nostalgia, but I count myself as an old fart that started playing in 94 and that novelty wore off now that it's been reprinted five times now. I approach deck building holistically, and I get more excitement from finding a crap common that synergies with my deck than a card that I probably grab right after selecting my general.
