Personally, I play her merely for her colours.
I mean you can play Shaarum or Zur, but you'd have to build your whole deck around your commander.
I play lots of counter spells and removal (Condemn, Sever, Shriekmaw, etc)
Lots of copies (Clone, Evil Twin, Metamorph)
and games end up boiling down to me killing everything and then responding by playing fatties. Or copying my fatties. Very classic control. Works well.
If you want protection try things like Mortify, Journey to Nowhere, Aethersnipe, and a lot of the new Avacyn Miracles.
And give her shroud or hexproof with Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves
