Why is 2/2 split of Dark Confidant and Grim Flayer not done?

Hey guys, I'm coming back from a near 2 year absence from MTG. Can someone give me the quick rundown on the last 2 years and the modern meta? What are the decks to beat right now?

I had a quick look on mtggoldfish and I must say Modern looks much healthier than it did when I went on break. There's an actual control deck doing well?!

What's the chance of a Bloodbraid Elf unban? I still have the FNM promos waiting to go...

Hey guys, I'm coming back from a near 2 year absence from MTG. Trying to catch up with the last 2 years of modern developments. Would love some advice.

I see that Eldrazi still exists despite losing Eye of Ugin and has merged with Tron - and tier 1, perhaps the deck to beat? How is our matchup against it? What is our strategy, and sideboard strategy against it? It looks like Grixis Delver got rid of Delver, added in Death's Shadow and Street Wraith and became tier 1. That seems like a good matchup for us?

Is the meta too aggressive for Dark Confidant?

In fact I'm just going to ask - can people give me their general impressions and thoughts on Abzan, BGx achetype as a whole, the meta and our matchups, sideboarding etc right now?

Hey guys I've been on a break from Magic for the last ~14 months, can anyone sum up what's changed in modern Jund since then?

Are Collective Brutality and the new Chandra the real deal?

How do the new bans affect Jund? Is that new one mana black removal spell going to be better for us than Terminate?

Chandra, Pyromaster saw play in Jund in 2014. The new one seems much better, so it wouldn't surprise me if it saw play in modern. For a while now the meta has been so aggressive that the 4 drop needs to save you from aggro and burn like Huntmaster and Kalitas do... so I don't think the meta is right for a 4 drop that simply exists to gain card advantage. Bloodbraid Elf might not even be played over the former 2 for the same reason were it unbanned, so I'm sceptical that anything that doesn't gain life can be played.

Breakdown is up, just in time to watch Tron obliterate Company in G2.
    http://www.starcitygames.com/events/coverage/3757_day_2_metagame_breakdown_.html

Top decks are exactly as expected going into the Open from States... except for Affinity! We already heard on stream that it had only two representatives going into Day 2, but it's fascinating to see that in the standings. Blue decks are around (the Scapeshift stat splits the Titan and Temur/BtL versions) too, but are hardly dominating. Looking at all the decks which might represent AV and/or Snapcaster decks, and including only half the Scapeshift decks, here's what we see:

    4 Scapeshift
    4 Jeskai Control
    3 Grixis Control
    2 Blue Moon
    1 Jeskai Flash
    1 Jeskai Black
    1 Temur Control
    1 Jeskai Thopter

That's 17 decks, or just over 12% of the field. Aggro is clearly in a better place than these blue-based decks, at least heading into the Top 32.

Thanks for compiling the number of AV decks in the field, I came into this thread just to ask about this.

Loving that Jund still puts up the highest numbers of any single deck after all predictions of its demise, even I didn't expect for it to do this well in a modern format with AV and no BBE.

    Format's looking good.

No. The only reason it ever had a pro tour was to make it popular to start with. It doesn't need the help anymore.

It will still have the second most constructed GPs and a PPTQ/RPTQ season, as well as being a format for the WMC and WMCQs.

I hope they increase the number of modern GPs to compensate. Otherwise, good decision.

It's for the best. Good decision. Affinity players can now relax.

If you read AF's article again, decks like Affinity, Infect, Grishoalbrand are all on the chopping block.

AF said he wants modern to "Offer different types of decks and gameplay than what you typically see in Standard". He wants modern to have a small ban list as possible. And he just restated the turn 4 rule.

While "not be dominated by fast, non-interactive decks" might sound worrisome for linear aggro-combo players, it's a vague statement up to interpretation. What is dominance? What is fast? All this point was really saying was that the turn 4 guiding principle is still in effect. Don't worry about a deck unless it is killing through disruption on turn 3 or below.

If they ban a combo or linear deck, another will immediately rise to occupy it's metagame share. It's like a hydra. The only way to truly reduce the overall linear metagame share is to print cards that enhance the generic answers of non-linear decks rather than trying to cut a single head off the hydra.

They took on board the mistake of last time and published a proper explanation this time too.

Well Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch now has the dubious honour of being the only (?) PT to cause a format to be removed from the PT entirely!

I don't think Affinity players can relax. The "less non-interactive decks" and "lower power level so more bad Standard cards can impact the format" paints a target on our forehead. I fear this will become an Extended Standard of sorts with grindy midrange creatures and 3 CMC removal swinging at each other.

While I would personally love for that to sort of happen, I have no idea what has driven you to believe this paranoid babble.

AF admitted in this article the PT caused more bans on an accelerated schedule. Affinity doesn't break the turn 4 rule. You have no reason to worry. Only start worrying if Affinity ever gets so good that it gets to 20% of the meta and people are mainboarding dedicated artifact hate.

Removing the modern PT is a great move. The meta will move more slowly, less cards will be banned, card prices will not spike because of the PT anymore.

      Modern should:
    • Have a diverse top-tier metagame featuring over a dozen archetypes
    • Not be dominated by fast, non-interactive decks (consistent kills before turn four are a red flag)
    • Be at a power level that allows some newly printed Standard cards to affect the format (we don't have other ways to introduce cards into the format, and we like it when cards or decks can transition)
    • Have as small a banned list as possible that accomplishes all the previous goals

It's great that AF publicly stated the goals for modern. I'm sure Sheridan is leaping for joy right now. He's going to come into this thread and either lock it or start celebrating.

My main interest here is that AF literally stated a number (12) for the number of top tier decks he wants in the metagame at minimum. I'll assume by top tier he means what we classify as tier 1 + 2.

The point about having newly printed standard cards affect the format is the most interesting one. Because that is the one they will most easily fail, and I'm sure some people think it's already a failed point.

I think Infect and Affinity are less at risk than Goryo's Vengeance/Through the Breach because Infect just loses hard to Jund and Grixis. I don't think they're ever going to bring infect back, but the core weakness of the deck to removal spells remains. Affinity has the most incredible hate cards in the format stacked against it. If it ever gets to the level where people start maindecking cards like Ancient Grudge to fight it then we know it's warped the format too far, but I don't see that happening. Yeah WotC could print a card that breaks those decks, but that argument applies to the format as a whole - they could print a card in a future block that could break any deck archetype.

Speaking of people losing to decks and then crying for bans...

You know, I've expressed the opinion here before that Goryo's Vengeance is probably on their watchlist and that if it ever gets popular enough or enough top 8s to be tier 1 I think it's got a good chance of being banned. It's the most purely unfair card in the format in terms of fastest you can do something ridiculously unfair. It's probably too strong for modern given the current answers. That being said, I might actually dislike Through the Breach more. You can neuter Goryo's Vengeance easily with maindeck cards like Scavenging Ooze, and since GV is a three card combo (you need a card to dump the fatty in the GY), it's more easily disrupted by modern's best disruption: discard. Through the Breach is 5 mana, which might be enough to completely rubbish my entire argument, but it's only a 2 card combo, so if you've used your discard to get rid of TTB or Emrakul, if they topdeck another one, you just lose the game instantly and there's nothing you can do about it.

Now by itself none of it would be irksome, but it all comes into a deck that has multiple angles of attack so requires you to have the perfect answers. Jace VP is amazing in that deck by the way. And since the deck is so unpopular, you can't waste any sideboard slots for it since we only get 15 of those slots (not enough imo). That's the strange situation a lot of these unfair decks exist in. They thrive and predate on you precisely because they're so unpopular. Collectively they occupy a large percentage of the metagame, except each of these linear combo decks by itself only has a tiny slice, meaning you can't waste sideboard slots on them. It all comes back to what I said before that to play a fair midrange deck in this format, you're fighting a war on an insane number of fronts at the same time.

What to do? Maybe just to accept that any deck that doesn't have blue in it for counterspells or vendilion clique just has a naturally bad time trying to fight Through the Breach + Emrakul, the Aeons Torn? Start playing blue myself and be better against combo but worse against burn? I guess I'll try it.

    @ Sentimental_Engine_Slayer

In General what ever reid duke is playing. I think mine is pretty generic:
In regards to sideboard I Wrote a computer program that runs a monte carlo simulation of an Evolutionary algorithm to determine the optimal side board for my meta.
Basically it does some smart guess and check for a couple thousand different combinations, Tweaks all the values then reruns.

Some items to note on Main board.
    • Kalitas is prob most popular due to Abzan Company
    • 4-2 Split IOK/TS is now the norm that eldrazi is dead
    • 2 K-Command Min now that Affinity is one of the strongest decks
    • Ghost quarters is the flex spot in the lands, it can be Overgrown tomb, Forest, or a fetch
    • A Scooze can become K-Finks if you have more burn than Abzan Company.

Like your list. Your sideboard definitely looks like it would wreck Affinity!

You thought about Thrun, the Last Troll in the sideboard now that blue decks are making a comeback? I've found he's just good against more than blue decks too, some decks just have a really hard time getting past an immovable single creature that they can't kill.
