The End of an Era

Not sure how to edit on my phone. I'd also rather see Llanowar Augur replaced with a mana dork. I mostly get its purpose, but I think an elf just gets the whole thing running a little smoother.

Here's a list of cards that are good on their own and can pair with him:

    Colorless:
    - Fetchlands
    - Chromatic Eggs
    - Quicksand
    - Haunted Fengraf
    - Expedition Map

    Blue:
    - Mulldrifter
    - Wretched Gryff
    - Perilous Research

    Green:
    - Sakura-Tribe Elder
    - Edge of Autumn
    - Yavimaya Elder

    Black:
    - Carrion Feeder
    - Altar's Reap
    - Vulturous Aven

    Red:
    - Kuldotha Rebirth
    - Atog

Edge of Autumn, Mulldrifter, and possibly the chromatic eggs were among my initial considerations when thinking about a rock control deck, but they mostly didn't make it into the OP for some reason. I'm excited about this because there really does seem to be 1000 ways to build this and it looking totally fine and smooth. The real test will be to make something actually viable against a chunk of the field.

I'm not sure why I didn't consider mono g as an option. I'm sure with Land Grant you could have some smooth draws, but the land count seems so low without 1 cmc mana dorks that it seems like there would be times where you are using Lotus Petal to get Tribe Elder in play. I'm not a fan of Grapple for a similar reasons; it just seems like you could miss on a land a lot of the time if you don't already have Expanse/Wilds in the gy and with so little mana, you're not really reaching terminal velocity on casting spells in a timely manner. That and it seems like a dog to a deck with cheap removal and a clock, like burn or a Ponza deck of some sort.

Anyway, like I said I'm still a ways off from building or testing anything myself yet. I'm not trying to shoot stuff down, just foster discussion until I can do something useful.

It´s not that it was an uninspired response, it´s just that im not an english born speaker so it would take me at least 20 minutes to write all sort of points and explanations that, summing up, it would be what I wrote in my other post.

If you want some ideas for making a deck with that creature and a good sinergy to pair with, I think It should be something like this.

    http://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/392668#online

    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/13-04-15-bg-sacrifice/

Well, if that's where you'd have ended up, I can see saving the 20 minutes. The decklists are of more use rather than effectively stating that the format contains both removal and creatures. Of the decklists, I'm not a huge fan of either because I'm not sure either has a big enough pay off for being completely based around sacrificing, though I won't deny that they have a lot of synergy with Bloodbriar. The second deck does come marginally closer to a value deck and that is slightly closer to what I'm interested in.

I would play it in a green based midrange deck with lots of other large undercosted threats, and then just lots of incidental sacrifice. Seals, Fonts, and Vessels alone provide great fuel for an Auramancer/Monk Idealist engine. Then there is the fetchlands and I'm not sure I like the chomarocks in these style decks due to the tempo hit you get from playing them. There's a reason only tron and affinity play them. Basically just play cards you would play anyways, but focus on the ones with a sacrifice clause.

I would start with G/R with Bloodbriar, Seal of Fire, Seal of Primodium, Wearbear, Fetches, and Vessel of Nascency.

Yeah, I'm definitely learning towards gr for a start. In fact, I don't see a way around that.

As for the Chromatic Star effects, Affinity plays them because they are free. To my knowledge, Tron plays them because the mana is a bit weak, Fangren Marauder, and the cantripping doesn't hurt. That would effectively be the same reasons I'd play them in this deck, provided it did end up 3 colors, but with the additional reason of Bloodbriar. Basically, saying that there is a reason it's not done when talking about a new card or archetype is a little reductive for my taste. All that said, I don't disagree that they are a minor dip in tempo but I wouldn't say Vessel passes that test either. Of course, Vessel is a great card in a vacuum, especially for a threshold build, which is why it will be considered alongside other cards despite possible negligible setbacks.

It dies to removal and decks that go wide (and even not THAT wide) can chump you for days.
The same could be said for Tarmogoyf but for some reason people are less likely to do that. Bloodbriar is basically a Tarmogoyf that costs 1 more and requires you to jump through some hoops. If your deck already has the hoops set up, then the only question that remains is whether a 3-mana Tarmogoyf is still good.

Barring minor hyperbole in Pauper, I had a similar initial reaction to the card. For Pauper's purposes, I'd say that a 3 mana, build-specific Tarmogoyf impersonator will never truly be terrible because it can quickly get out of range of much removal and when it doesn't, oh well, play another creature and continue.

If people want to continue to discuss the possibilities here, I'm game. Specific deck lists and any testing on my end will likely be a ways off, unfortunately, as I am out of the country for a bit and away from my PC. Frown

I personally don´t like it. It dies to removal and decks that go wide (and even not THAT wide) can chump you for days.

While I don't necessarily disagree with either point, you have to admit this was a very uninspired response. Though I suppose that's partly my fault for not further explaining my goal.

The goal is not solely to attack with the one creature and scoop to blockers or a removal spell. It's going to be in a shell of similarly-oriented spells and creatures. Werebear, sweepers, regrowth effects, and sacrifice effects that can replace themselves or create card parity etc.

Now, would anyone else be willing to submit ideas for this, or is this too abstract and vague without me just building something and reporting back first?

Just wondering everyone's thoughts on Bloodbriar in really any shell, though I can't imagine it will be very fast. My current thoughts pull me towards a controlling, rock-like shell of 2-3 colors with cards like Chromatic Sphere, Evolving Wilds, various seal effects possibly from the board, and whatever role players make sense for the build: Fangren Marauder, Auramancer various Threshold/Metalcraft cards etc.

Or maybe not heavy on a particular theme, but with some incidental sacrifice cards. Essentially, I'm just trying to get Bloodbriar to a 5/6+ with fairly heavy control and close out the game shortly after.

Does this seem interesting or worthwhile to anyone else?

I look at the challenge "Trinket text" and I can only think of Ice Cauldron. It's not a mechanical challenge as far as I can tell, and it doesn't seem like a flavor challenge...idk.
