If a creature is a 1/2 and has an equipment or enchantment that gives it a +3/+3 or perhaps counters that add to its power and toughness, to any end, does a Smite the Monsterous (Destroy target creature with power of 4 or greater) or a similar card destroy it, or does the creature retain its initial printed power and toughness for the sake of this spell and therefore this card cannot be used on it? Thank you for reading.

I am Chad Perron, I live in Port Arthur, Texas. I am relatively new to magic(been playing for about 3-4 months), but I love the game, and am eager to fully understand the mechanics of the game. I have already got quite a collection, including 9 decks total(2 or 3 of which i am still working on a bit) and a fatpack sized box full of cards i am not yet using in a deck. I seem to like mono color decks and favor red a lot, but i love aspects of all colors(as i am sure we all do) I will be posting for many rules questions and welcome anyone who is in the SE Texas area to contact me by replys for anything or with any information in local events. Thank you for reading.

Thank you Root breaker. Its not even me trying to throw it in his face(him being my buddy i was playing at the time). It's just me making sure I understand the rules correctly. Thank you all for the very speedy responses.

yes, bradleyforrest, that is one of the many things i was referring too that was wrong with the play...sorry i didn't mention that. I should of pointed out that i was asking in light that the situation was repeated with a similar card without hex proof. Sorry, I know its very confusing, because we messed up that play SO bad. (Laughs at self)

Ok. Here is the situation. In a game between a friend of mine and I, which he has played magic for some time now(and I will admit that I am even somewhat of a "newb"(bout 4 months playing); I have a Lumberknot on the battlefield, as well as he has two fumespitters on the battlefield and another creature. After an attack where i took the damage from the other creature and the fumespitters, he opted to sacrifice a fume spitter to put a -1/-1 counter on lumberknot, in response, i played a hunger of the howlpack on lumberknot.
At the time we didn't even resolve it remotely correctly. But later when i brought it up, this is what i said should have happened.

    He sacrifices the fumespitter(activates morbid)(puts a +1/+1 counter on Lumberknot(total 1))
the -1/-1 goes on the stack, and is responded by the hunger of the howlpack, which then resolves first, with morbid, putting 3 +1/+1 counters on Lumberknot(total 4),
his -1/-1 counter negates one of the 4 and thus Lumberknot is left with 3 +1/+1 counters on him.

He argued that the sacrifice, as well as the counters all go on the stack. I found that the sacrifice, in this situation, is a cost to do the ability, therefore the sacrifice would happen before anything else, and the -1/-1 would go on the stack. meaning that both the instant i played in response, as well as the triggered ability would happen before the -1/-1 counter is resolved.

Is any of my understanding of how this would play out incorrect? If so please explain and rule listings either way would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and help.
