Do you count colorless cards with colored activations as artifacts or as the color for the activation? Likewise, do you count a red spell with a blue flashback as red, blue, or an izzet card? I have a balanced-color cube that I want to keep balanced. This includes multicolor cards. I have two spellbombs right now, but I want to look at including more cards like that, but not entire cycles. So, the question is, colorless count, or color count?

In my normal play group, I am thought of as the most competitive person there. I was the one to really push the group into EDH, and they all love the format now. They tend towards the Timmy side of things, so more big things, more big plays. I love this! I really think that you should go ahead and play the type of Magic that you want.

However, like I said, I am though of as the most competitive person at the table. This has brought me a lot of attention when it comes to them thinking about who is the most threatening. I think they unfairly target me because of this reputation. I have made less aggressive decks, I have made weaker quality decks to force myself into a handicap. I've even stopped playing the deck they all say is by far the most powerful of my decks, though I still have it together.

This is not to say they don't have strong, or very synergistic decks. I find myself trying really hard to make things manageable for the table (4-5 ppl). But in doing so, I become the target of the table's ire.

I don't want to just make a deckt hat sweeps a lot or stops them from playing games, but how do I fight back against what I feel is an unfair targetting of me and my decks?

EDIT: Sorry for the rant. It seems a little like whining, as I read it back, but I just want a little push in a direction that everyone can be happy with.

What about a modified form of achievements? A shifting list that changes some of the higher point achievements from week to week? The 1 and 2 point items would be the same, and the penalties would stay the same, just the 3 and 4 point things change. I'm thinking that it should be multiplayer, keeping the intent of the format, not 1v1. I understand that collusion could be a thing, but the people I know for sure that would show up aren't going to do this.

The second thing, is how to attract and advertise the league? How much heads-up should I give to the players prior to starting? I have a group of 6 people that would for sure show, but how do I build a larger group, so it isn't the same groupings every other week?

I've read the first page, and am horrified that the "EDH Mafia" think this is okay. I only bring up the idea of an entry fee because I want to incintivize people coming out to the shop, and to continue to enjoy the play group. I was thinking about something long term, like pooling the entry fees until the end of a season then assigning a prize payout based on over-all standings. The standings would be based off of end-of-night points. Is the whole idea of an entry fee a bad one? I don't know how to keep them coming back, and prizes seems the best way

I want to start an EDH league at my shop. I understand the idea behind keeping the format casual, and plan to use a points system, similar to how Armada Games has theirs. However, the rest is kinda shaky to me. Entry fees? prize payout? How long are the seasons? Everything outside the game play, essentially.

Just a few questions about building the thing itself. About how many lands should I aim for in a 250 card deck. And the other one is, why not going 4C? Esper + Red seems pretty good. It opens up Bonfire, some loot effects, and desperate ravings, while keeping all the good white sweepers.

  • posted a message on Chapin's SCG Commentary...
I mostly agree with the previous posts, with some exception. I think Chapin and JVL are my favorites, but the bar isn't all that high when you look at it.

Every commentator has something that they bring to the stream; humor, insight, history. But all of them suffer from the same malady: they don't actually follow the games!

Far too often we can hear them say "Wait, what happened? Shouldn't that delver be dead?" Then, moments later "I guess he had the leak/negate for his doom blade." They shouldn't have to guess. They were brought in to call the match, just like any other sport. The Commentators in other sports use downtime between plays to do the insight stuff. I know there isn't a lot of downtime in a game of magic, but there is enough for the analysis of a game in progress. If we can, from the comfort of our homes and across the internet, can keep up with something happening so far from us, why can't they when it's only a few yards away from them? Some people are worse than others.

The biggest item pointing to my gripe, is the increased number of play mistakes and cheats that appear on the stream. The most recent cheat, at SCG Detroit, is a huge example. The cheat that was executed on camera wasn't even particularly slick. It was really obvious. I could understand his opponent not seeing it, his attention was somewhere else (cutting the deck). I could understand that the table judge might not have seen it, his vantage point might have been obscured or his attention pulled by the runner or feature match writer. But the men who are there for the explicit reason to watch the matches, and keep up with the action. They are the ones that should have caught the cheat. Right then and there. not when he was about to T8.

Anyway, that's my rant. I love the coverage, I really enjoyed Chapin in the booth. I just really wish that the commentators, whoever they may be, watch the match and keep up with the action.

I don't think Silverheart and dredge are completely seperate. That being said, I think Mauler and Cagebreakers is the real deal. My shop is going to host a 1K block event in ~2 weeks. I really love Splinterfright, but I'm unsure if I should go forward with building dredge or not.

So, is dredge dead? There were none in T8 of PT AVR, none in T8 of GP: Anaheim, and it isn't showing up in the dailies. Dredge seems to do some really fun things, can play two of the best cards in block (Silverheart and Conscripts in RUG), and has very strong cards for cheap. Does dredge have any legs against reanimator, Jund, and Boros? Or is it just dead to any of the decks that are seeing play right now?

Playing cephalid Breakfast in legacy, if I reanimate The Mimeoplasm and make it a copy of Murderous Redcap with +1/+1 counters equal to Lord of Extinction, can my opponent use Karakas in response to negate the damage he would take from the triggered ability?

The Alara wedges were interesting and flavorful otherwise.

Didn't Alara rely on shards, not wedges? The wedges were used in the commander product, weren't they? I know Alara was three color, just like wedges would be, but wouldn't the flavor of each Ravnican wedge be different enough to distinguish itself from Alara?

I just missed out on Alara, so I'd be very happy to see a multi-color friendly block.

I've played the Blue and Black ones in all my 5 color decks. Yes, they aren't as good as sphinx/demon. Yes, they aren't truly 5 color. Yes, they are under-powered for their cost. But also, yes, they are very fun in game. Because they aren't sphinx/demon, they don't draw the same hate they do, so I'm always more likely to trigger them multiple times. Plus, 5 color kinda needs the low key to start up and finish strong, and these do a good job helping that.

Don't be discouraged. While ancient grudge is a terribly difficult card to beat, puresteel, with the appropriate swords, can still bring it down. I've top 8'd 3 SCG super IQ's (80+ people) and find that the match-up against most decks is about 50/50. Even wolf run and G/R aggro isn't much worse than that. It's all in how you build the SB. Against wolf run, I've actually found that slagstorm is more of a problem than ancient grudge.

Pet Decks. I've been playing Puresteel Paladin almost since it was released, and I still haven't given it up. Everytime I go into my binder to find something new to build, there he is, just sitting, STARING. I know I need to play something better for the meta, but he calls to me.

I'm sure most have had this experience, but I thought that I was a really great player until I competed in my first sanctioned tournament. It really put things in perspective and made me want to get better.

I had the exact opposite of this happen. I played casually with friends for a couple months. I loved it cause it was strategy and I love strategy games. I went to play in my first tournament. It was Besieged game-day and I totally expected to just get washed out. I was running WW Quest. round 2, paired against the second best player at the shop. He played Grixis control with Tezz, and after much battling and 3 games, I got him. Each game, I never had Quest. Then immediately after, was paired against the reigning State champ and beat him in 3 games. I topped 8 out of around 50 people. Since, I routinely make top 8 of SCGIQ/GPT/Game-Day and top 4 FNM drafts
