Ninjas would be great, but I'd also be happy to see Rogues. Swinging with small and evasive beaters, then casting undercosted prowl cards in the second main phase is a pretty unique style of play.

Do you have any proof of what you say? If it was just an accident and innocent edit, it happened to include a really peculiar sentence and as a result, it sent mixed/potentially controversial signals.
No, I don't have any proof of it being a "harmless" edit. But I don't really understand why people view the change as controversial. As others here have pointed out, what Chandra originally said was very explicit and out of character. It was worded in such a way that even the most thick-witted readers would get that Chandra is interested in Nissa romantically. I can understand that people want representation, but I don't like it when a story has to be written awkwardly just to incorporate the exact words some people would like to read, at all costs. In the edited version, the situation retains the same atmosphere, the dialogue is more in-character, and you can still tell that Chandra is bummed about being "friendzoned".

I always got the sense that it wasn't really that Nissa was "talking" to the planes but that she was just sensing them out and it was displayed as talking. All the words were just sensations she got from feeling the plane out and her mind, or the story for our benefit, interprets it into words. I mean she also just describes how touching the essence of the plane feels.
If that's what her "talking" with the planes is supposed to be like, why don't they mention (or at least hint at) it anywhere? The way it's written, it really seems like Nissa is just talking to some person.
    Quote from Caranthir »
I do not mind the LGBT/trans subthemes in Magic. But what I mind are these cowardly edits.
It wasn't a cowardly edit, it was a edit that made the story/dialogue better. I think they articles go through proofreading, that's probably why the change was made in the first place. They just posted the older version by accident.

Eh, I actually like the "after" version better than the "before" version. The latter was very on-he-nose and stilted - it didn't sound like something Chandra would actually say. The "after" version sounds a lot more natural while retaining meaning.

Today's story was surprisingly good. Nissa and Chandra actually didn't feel like simple cardboard cutouts this time! I also liked the worldbuilding with the revelation of the eight gods and Nissa's short exchange with Oketra, although it really seems a bit careless of Bolas to leaves all that evidence around.

I agree with some of the criticism here though. Nissa talking with the plane was ... kinda funny. Maybe that's what she's always done. But when I hear that someone can "converse with the soul of a world", I imagine something more complex and strange than a disembodied voice talking more or less like and other person would.
I'd also appreciate it if the denizens of Amonkhet were a little more suspicious of the Gatewatch members. Sure, maybe everyone knows that they are visitors at this point. But they still should raise some eyebrows, considering how rare people (that aren't undead/cursed/whatever) coming from outside the barrier seem to be.

I think this is the right way to use them, although they may not make the cut in some cases depending on the power level you're going for. I'd consider Kefnet and Rhonas for a creature-heavy UG deck with the new Nissa, lots of creature-based carddraw, a bit of self-bounce and either Momir, Rashmi or Kruphix at the helm.

    Feels a bit forced, no?
I think it's neat. It's not like they made the pantheon all-female or something; interpreting this as "forced diversity" sounds kinda ... forced to me.

As for the card, well, it's not horribly interesting, just like the rest of the gods. The "can't attack or block" thing is probably what makes the Amonkhet gods seem underwhelming to many people. The "ins't a creature unless"-thing on the Theros gods was a drawback that also functioned as protection. In contrast, the "animation clause" on the Amonkhet gods is just a drawback. I also think that people are exaggerating the epicness of the Theros gods though.

I love it how mad people get during spoiler season. Someone says "we thought that this specific card was too strong for the particular environment we wanted to build" and immediately someone goes "OK now EVERY CARD that does thing X isn't fun anymore, ALRIGHT Wizards, please continue DUMBING DOWN THE GAME."

Unlike a Counterspell or a black removal spell, Desert can go into literally any deck. They just decided that, to a certain degree, having to balance every creature around Deserts activated ability wasn't worth it. Neither does that mean they consider it too powerful to be printed in a Standard set ever again, nor that they will never print efficient removal again.

I was sad that we didn't get Miscalculation too, but jeez, calm down people.

Guys the new cycling trigger cards also trigger for self discard in general. Don't get so hung up on strictly cycling cards, look into things like Oath of Scholars or Dawnstrider or Unfulfilled Desires or Compulsion

This. I don't think getting too hung up on cycling specifically is a good idea. You don't want to use sub-par cards like Twisted Abomination just to fuel your Drake Haven. The strength of the deck should be that it can sift through its cards relatively fast (in order to find answers/cards it wants) while also being able to mitigate the loss of the cards it has to throw away in the process.

Run good cycling cards that are also reasonably powerful on their own like Akroma's Vengeance, Decree of Pain, Hush, Krosan Tusker, Sylvan Reclamation, an assortment of cycling lands and some of the new cycling cards from Amonkhet. Also, a fair bit of looting: Frantic Search, Careful Consideration, Compulsive Research, Thirst for Knowledge, the aforementioned Compulsion and maybeMerfolk Looter or Monastery Siege. If you're playing Ravos, Sun Titan is an auto-include. Faerie Macabre for graveyard hate. Fauna Shaman works really well with Ravos.

However, in the end the question is: After all this fun and cute stuff you do, how do you want to win? That's something I've not figured out so far, although I think a reanimator-like strategy is the most obvious choice here. Anyway, you can't really rely on your Drake Haven just not getting removed.

It would be like saying a minotaur is a bull or saying a human is an ape or that a drake is a dragon. They have similar physical qualities but they are not the animals they look like. According to your arguments, you would be ok with them making angels birds humans simply because they got wings.
Angels (just like Minotaurs) have been there right from the beginning of the game. Nagas were introduced relatively late and I'd argue that there was no real demand for the creature type in the first place. Angels are also far enough removed from birds (no bird head/beak) that they can be seen as their own thing, flavor-wise (plus the whole "made out of pure white mana" thing). Making angels "bird humans" would be a big retroactive change. But in case of snakes there was a preexisting snake-people tribe with lords, synergies etc. and they just decided to cut them off from future support for whatever reason. Honestly, I wouldn't care about this at all if "snake" had just been a random creature type before Nagas came along. But it just feels wrong to me that they're ignoring the Orochi altogether. There could be so much more interaction between the two tribes if it wasn't for this arbitrary distinction.

Edit: I just checked Blogatog and even Maro seems to see the establishment of the Naga creature type as a mistake. Sure, he's not the one who decides everything, but that makes it even more frustrating.

Devoted Druid and Channeler Initiate for ramp. Maybe thrown in Quillspike for the combo ?
Dusk Urchins is an on-theme way to draw cards, although it's arguably a bit slow.
Necroskitter to take over their dead (dying) creatures.
Soul Snuffers for another Carnifex Demon-like effect.

What's interesting is that she is enemy colored, which potentially means that they are not doing straight allied or enemy colored cycle of legends. Thinking this since the UW legend was first spoiled, and now we have Hapatra. Maybe it'll be like Kaladesh where we just had a random assortment of colors for legends without a cycle.
They could also be doing all color pairs spread across the two sets. Don't really expect it though.

Instead of complaining about Nagas having the type naga, you should complain about snake people from Kamigawa not having the type Orochibito, which would be more logical than making the naga snakes.
The whole point of creature types is grouping creatures with similar appearance / attributes though. The aven of Amonkhet are literally just humans with bird heads and wings, yet they don't have their own type. If Aven can be birds and Leonin can be cats on every plane, I see no reason why Nagas and snakes have to be split, especially since the problem of backwards compatibility exists. Also, in contrast to fish, plants, and lizards, they actually designed a commander for the snake tribe just two years ago. Sure, that's only one card. But I still don't really get why they had to establish this new type - no one would have complained if the Naga type hadn't been introduced.

And they've been doing this from the start. Minotaur is strongly bound to specifically-Greek myth (Minos), but it's been a creature type everywhere from Dominaria to Ravnica to Alara to Zendikar, in addition to its logical place in Theros. They could use the existing creature typeOx, but they don't.

I think the stranger inconsistency is that cat and cat-people are given the same type - that they never made Leonin a type.

The Minotaurus is a mythical creature literally everyone is familiar though, at least in Magic's main audience in the west. The Naga? Not so much.

They could also decide to give bird-people the Aven type, since that name has a very long history in magic. But they don't and only the snakes are split into two tribes for no good reason, that's why I'm so salty right now.

If you play a deck with him at the helm, I think you should make use of his beefy body, go the voltron route and cut combo stuff for more control and draw.

Great post, Formless_One! Some characters in magic, and especially the Gatewatch, really are too closely defined by their colors. But mono-colored characters are kinda hard in that regard. In a way, if you make their characters too complex and maybe even let them dabble into some other color of magic, people would most likely demand that the additional color be represented on the planeswalker card ("he must be part green or white because he used a healing spell"). I see this in many discussions where people argue for or against a character having or not having color X in his/her mana cost because [reasons]. In order for more complex (mono-colored) characters to be possible, the audience also needs to know and accept that the colors we see on a card can reflect only the most prevalent traits of a certain character and that it's neither necessary nor achieveable to have every little thing represented. Otherwise, pretty much every character could be five- or at least four-color.

    Amonkhet lands? (boring)
c'mon guys! Get the creative juices flowing ...

They're just going to be called (Amonkhet) Cycling Duals. Weird names (like Tangolands for the ones in BFZ) don't usually stick.

    Whaaaaaaat

Very nice. The artwork for Irrigated Farmland is a bit awkward though (art-wise, it's Scattered Groves=Fetid Pools>Canyon Slough>Sheltered Thicket=Irrigated Farmland for me).

As someone who could understand the rare-shift for Mindcensor, I'm not sure why Renewed Faith is uncommon. Seems like a pretty basic card to me. The resounding cycle was at common and arguably more complex.

Personally I'd be pretty happy with Theros or Kamigawa I think. Depending on what post-Aurora Lorwyn is like I might enjoy there as well. I'd still rank both in the Neutral category, but I think for me personally I'd be fine there.

Lorwyn is peaceful, but having your base there as a human planeswalker would be pretty awkward. You'd have to permanently use some sort of illusion spell.

On the topic of Bolas "farming planeswalkers" on Amonkhet:

I could see a walker that ascended through the trials being somewhere in the story. Statistically it should be very unlikely, but well, everything can happen for the sake of a story. However, I think it's highly unlikely that we see two or more "farmed" walkers - at least to me, that would be a little too convenient for Bolas. Really can't imagine the planeswalker thing being anything but a nice side effect.

It still feels bad though, especially when you're reading because you have more time to reflect on what is happening. Also, "random fight because there hasn't been any fighting for a while" has to be one of the absolute worst common fantasy tropes. If your characters have to be temporarily nerfed for the sake of an "exciting fight scene", then you maybe shouldn't write the fight scene in the first place or write a different one that's actually believable. (On the other hand, this is probably nitpicking and setting high standards, considering that the authors probably don't have too much time to write the articles, which results in literary fast food - wew, sounding pretty pretentious here...)

It sounds like Bolas made use of an already existing culture to further his own goals. That makes me wonder if he also is behind the state Amonkhet is currently in (basically all deathly desert and one large oasis) or if that is the plane's "natural state".

So Hazorat is the last trial, huh? I'm curious which god will be the equivalent to the rock- or bug-type gym in Pokemon.

I'd love to see the Gatewatch royally screw something up though

    +1
I'm OK with no one dying; them making a really dumb mistake and having to work really hard to recover from it would be fine too.

Errr... have you been to Japan?
Even smaller cities like Sapporo or Sendai are about as built up and dense as Chicago.

The comparison is still valid though because you also need flat land for other stuff like rice fields, which leads to rather compact cities even in the countryside. Obviously Amonkhet is a lot more extreme than real-world Japan, but it was just a loose comparison anyway.

(And yes I've been there - but not in Tohoku or Hokkaido yet, funnily enough)

Is it just me or do most of these have more buildings than Ravnica Lands? Building were cool in Ravnica, but here they're used in in way that makes me feel claustrophobic. (Mostly Plains 3, Island 2, Mountain 2, and Forest 2.)

"The city" on Amonkhet is most likely so dense for a similar reason why Tokyo in the real world is: Apparently most of the plane's population lives inside it since the rest of Amonkhet isn't really a place where you can maintain a larger settlement.

That "Forest" consists of, like, six trees at most.

I guess that's what you'll have to work with on a plane that's somewhere between 80 and 90 percent desert...

With all those wurms maybe we will finally, finally, get a legendary wurm creature for a wurm commander deck!

I'd rather have a legendary human wurmrider to be honest. Haven't read Dune, but that seems to be a thing there and is a pretty cool concept.

The fight against the sandstorm, the zombies, the wurms and then the undead wurms was a bit of a slog. It reminded me of the last time I read a full story article, during BFZ, where Gideon whipped his sural back and forth a bunch. They probably wanted to portray how dangerous the lands outside of the city are, but after the zombies it kind of felt like the author just wanted to pad the length of the article a bit more.

However, what we saw of the plane was interesting. I'm looking forward to learning about how the Gods and Bolas are connected and how Amonkhet "works" as a whole. I'm much more interested in the world building aspect of the stories than the actual characters, which are just overall unappealing to me, although some are better than others (Gideon=Liliana>Jace>Nissa>Chandra).

    Quote from ThyLordQ »
Second Edit: Is anyone else curious as to why that one sandwurm picture had completely different dimensions than the others? The 9th picture down in the story, during Chandra's segment?

I think the third sandwurm picture is the art for a sandwurm token. I could imagine the second picture being on a sorcery that makes the tokens.
