Eater of the Dead and Stonecloaker are both great options for shutting down yards without spoiling your own.

This poll is really poorly composed. What about if I wanted modern to be more like legacy and if that were to happen I'd bother sleeving up a modern deck more often. Modern has been dead to me since Deathrite was banned. I owned every deck in the format prior to that. Now I have zoo, infect, junk, and hate bears because the decks share so many cards with legacy. Losing DRS was my wake up call in relation to Wizard's view of the future and power level of the format. So far that hunch has proven correct. Pity.

I apreciate all of the answers. Just to allay any confusion-- I'm aware it's a legit play on my behalf at comp/pro REL, but I was unsure about the outcome at regular REL. I don't often play in Regular REL events, so I didn't have a strong enough grasp of how things pan out at that level.

Also for anyone confused, don't feel too bad, it was also the first the judge had heard of the rule.

Also, I was never asked to clarify the p/t of the creature.

Another also, I promise I'm not a total sleaze-bag. This was FNM, but everyone playing had tiered decks and tournament experience of varying levels. I wouldn't push that line of play against a little kid or anything.

I have a Wild Nacatl and a Noble Heirarch in play. I declare my Nacatl as the sole attacker and my opponent declares his Wall of Omens as the blocker. We move to damage step and I announce four points of damage. My opponent did a double take and anounced that he would like to use a removal spell on my creature (let's ignore the timing of this request). At this point I called the judge over and explained the situation. Explained the way triggers with non-visible effects work. The judge decided a roll-back to declare attackers step was appropriate and since there is no higher judge at the FNM I agreed with the ruling and just let it go. I'm curious about what the proper ruling would be at regular REL for this situation. I'd rather not let this precedent stand if it is incorrect. Thank you very much for your help.

  • posted a message on Crazy Plays in EDH.
While playing in a fairly competitive game against a few friends I managed to win the game in a rather cool fashion while playing my Prime Speaker Zegana combo-control deck.

My friend was playing a Zedruu the Great Hearted deck full of prison spells that he affectionately call "players can't." Eventually the game grinds out to the point where there are two creatures in play with a Portcullis out and another player has a Diluvian Primordial being held back by the Portcullis which would have come into play and wiped me by casting a wrath effect from the graveyard of the "Players Can't" player. So I cast my Palinchron untapped my mana and sent the weird clay terodactyl out under the portcullis. Then I cast Primal Order targeting the Portcullis for return and shuffling away the graveyard with a wrath effect. From there my Palincron returned to play allowing me to untap 7 lands again and play a Deadeye Navigator for infinite.

It's already devolved into what you claim to not desire, A near Legacy-clone deck has dominated the format for a while now... What was it you kept saying? "if you wanna play legacy, go play legacy?" Yet, Modern's top tier deck, the deck to beat, is a near identical CLONE of one of the top decks in Legacy...

I'm not so sure you have much experience with legacy Jund, or you're exaggerating to make a point.

The most expensive deck winning the format? Seems fine to me. /sarcasm

I'm pretty sure that's why Wizards have traditionally gone after combo decks like Eggs and Storm while leaving Jund alone seasons after seasons.

Which is why Jund has access to Bloodbraid Elf and Punishing Fires...

I have access to literally every deck in the format, and Jund is rarely my deck of choice at any given moment... So I'm not being defensive, but seriously you guys are barking up the wrong tree when it comes to clamoring for a ban in Jund. I'd rather see a plethora of cards off the ban list before a we cry our way into the banning of yet another fair card. Every time a deck does well this thread is full of people rending their clothes in anguish at the thought of having to face a card. It's sad. Play the game.

Unrelated, but that's some solid work with the number crunching on scooze. I was wondering what sort of effect my favorite maverick beater would have in modern.

This is usualy when someone starts to be a jerk.

    How did I know?

Yes it does. Now they should rerint it so it comes back to a reasonable price.

I find that the biggest jerks on forums tend to be the ones to take posts apart sentence by sentence. Every time a card raises in price doesn't mean that we need to start mashing the reprint button. You can either practice foresight and pay attention to what's going on with various cards in various decks, or you can feel the burn of jumping in late. I'm never opposed to reprints, but a card inching out of your price range doesn't mean that it should automatically be reprinted because you don't feel a card is worth its current market value.

The card is in the same set as goyf, sees play across multiple decks, and is a land. Fortunately for you it has a generic name and effect so it may even see a reprint in a mass market set. The only negative is that it's a pain land, which scrubs hate, so it's unlikely to end up in a core set.

Not to be a jerk, but I love when people sleep on a card then get outraged when it jumps in price... Horizon Canopy has a unique effect for a land and started seeing increased play in Legacy (D&T) and Modern (Boggles/GW Hatebears).

Why weaken your main deck when you're worried about a card that's in 1-2 playable decks? That's why we have sideboards-- toss a few surgical extractions in your board and go ham.

One big piece of advice is to consider avoiding the use of 'um' as filler for lost thought. It's hard to do, but it will help you in general life as well. I had the problem for the longest time but honestly an open silence betrays less than wasted breath. Something to consider. An easy way to avoid it is to pace your words, and pause after sentences to consider your next full thought.
Outside of that I dug what you were doing. Good luck going forward. A 96 man FNM sounds daunting.

I was just on your FB page... Looks like you play at the mics. That's kinda cool, and may account for a portion of what I heard.

If you're skipping the rest of your turns, and your opponent doesn't have plays because their stuff comes in tapped... You don't need a kill condition to accelerate your win. You only have to repeat the chrono-lock 40-50 times and they deck out. I'd consider running Forsaken City as a non-swordsable lock-condition as well. It won't provide you with an automatic win like Chronotog will, so maybe a singleton Jace Beleren would work for your alternate wincon.

It absolutely is... And I'm sorry about that. It's definitely something that you should take slowly. My one friend bought his way into it over the course of about 4 months picking up bits and pieces at a time, then he borrowed the cards for legacy... And scrubbed out on coverage on his win and in back before people knew jund was a thing in legacy at SCG Columbus (the same weekend as the GP where Pat Cox got t8 with jund.) Fortunately for him that got him a portion of the credit he needed to snag the duals.

While that doesn't help you, it does illustrate an important part of getting into legacy-- finding friends to lend you the cards in the meanwhile and winning your duals at local monthly tourneys. If you're in an area that's friendly to legacy, you're in an area that will have tourneys that pay out in duals to the first and maybe second place players.

If you're looking to do well in both formats... Jund. It's brutal in Legacy when people are being forced to play fair, and it's one of the best modern decks as well. The upside is that you get to use the 'cheap'er duals and fetches as well. DO NOT PLAY AFFINITY-- it's not a good deck in Legacy... at all.
Merfolk is better in Legacy than Modern, but it's not close to top tier in either format.
