Unless everyone thinks like that and start buying the card like crazy right after MM release. Then, given the print is limited, it could even increase the price.

I've been talking to a lot of traders and everyone who is getting MM is in one of two camps when it comes to Goyfs.

    1. If his initial price is in the 1xx range they will sell or trade to get maximum value.

    2. If his initial price is in the 70's or lower they will just hold on to it.

Yes there are some variables to that, but for most people Goyf is that card that when they get it, they just want to hold it and hug it and go to sleep with it at night. Good luck trying to get them to part with it... I think that speaks volumes as to what the price will be when MM is out...

It should be pretty easy with the amount of removal this deck has. Hold your Paths and burn for the relevant creatures (the combo ones), preserve your counters for Pod, win?

Thx... I'm new to this deck, what's our win condition in this MU? the Colonade and keep mana open for path/burn?

Angel is pretty great in this deck & actually gives you a lot more options than you might think (which is where its strength is). It's got flash which gives you more flexible lines of play since almost everything else in the deck is instant as well, and it's bolt-proof. It saves Geist from combat damage so you can keep turning him sideways even in the face of numerous blockers. It gives you great late-game plays blinking snapcaster mages & making resto a pseudo-snapcaster herself, and can do similar plays with vendilion clique. I don't think Resto is a guaranteed 4-of by any means, but I do think that the combined interactions she has with Geist, Snap, and Clique (assuming your list runs those guys), all on your opponent's end step if need be, are just too good to ignore.

How does everyone feel about Venser, Shaper Savant? I'm testing him as a 1-of, so my creatures are:
    4 Geist
    4 Snapcaster
    3 Resto
    2 Clique
    1 Venser
He seems like a great catch-all for problem noncreature permanents, he 'counters' uncounterable spells, turns sideways at least as well as snapcaster, synergizes with restoration angel, he plays agressively as a 4th resto to pull geist out of combat on the attack, and he plays defensively to bounce 1 threat and chump a second, he gets around protection from R/W... his body's unimpressive for his cost but I'm having trouble coming up with a situation where he wouldn't be useful. Also synergizes with Eiganjo Castle, though I really doubt that will be relevant.

That's my creature list and I think its awesome! Put back something in their hand after they play it and smash back for 2! I think its perfect at 1, but I'm going to go to a second 1 in the sideboard to try it out in specific match ups.

well, i play a slightly different version from the lists posted. i run some number of spell snares in the mainboard, so that affects some match ups.

the deck has game against the whole field. there's no doubt about that. match ups, i feel, are never worse than 40-60, if that. a huge part of this deck's strength is the ability to drop a geist and clear a path for it. the stock list doesn't really have cards that go over the top or can supremely turn the tide.

looking at the "proven" archetypes, this is how i'd rate the following match ups.

Affinity - Easy. they can land an etched champion and make things hard for us, but really, they shouldn't be resolving one. don't be afraid to take a hit or two from a creature that isn't etched champion. don't burn everything they drop, because they might post combat a champion. after sideboard, its even easier, because there's some number of board wipes, stony silence, and disenchant.

Birthing pod - depends on your draw, not theirs. if we draw removal and burn, we easily stop them from comboing (both melira and kiki-jiki). if you can stick a clock (geist, duh), the game will greatly be in your favor. if you can't stick a threat or provide no clock, they have an advantage because they can go off in many ways. watch out for chord for 2, since that's probably image.

infect - easy with the amount of removal we have and the spellskites in the sideboard.

GBx - 50/50. without a doubt the other best deck in the format. both decks can take the role of aggressor, and both can take the reactionary role. you can try to rush the geist turn 3 and hope they don't have the liliana. those are the two pivotal cards in the match up. both have removal to keep the other off the early/mid, both have manlands/burn to get there in the late game.

RDW - we're at a disadvantage here. it depends on how much sideboard you pack for it and if you see it. mainboard helix helps, geist helps, but they're really fast. here, the spell snares help a ton, since it stops boros charm.

scapeshift - we should win this. between the cliques, geist, counters, and helices, we should be able to clock them, stop them from ramping, and get above the magical 18 health. snare helps again here, since they have that 2 mana ramp. if you can, kill sakura tribe elder on their turn (preferably with electrolyze) so they can't chump your geist.

tron - somewhat difficult. they maindeck pyroclasm. 'nuff said. snares help :p stops sylvan scrying and pyroclasm. post board, hope you have a counter and sowing salt in your opening hand.

twin - surprisingly a relatively difficult match up. burn does little to exarch, they run dispel to stop our counters/removal. skite is good for twin, kiki only has 2 toughness. don't tap out for geist on the draw.

    storm - ha.

tempo - we have the removal for delver, and out value them with our later game spells.

mirror/control - not sure. haven't played this match up much. sword of war and peace helps. elspeth helps.

lifegain - bad match up. odds are they will out lifegain our aggro abilities. not exactly sure how to fight it. pyroclasms/verdict/ee/ratchet bomb are all good. i play the other side of this match up as well, and it laughs at your aggro potential, especially the decks that run proc.

hatebears - never lost against this match up. snare for thalia helps.

zoo - haven't played against it. i've been lurking in the zoo forum trying to figure out what they do. they haven't noticed me yet...

Thanks for this! I always love to read this information. SOmetimes when I come up against a deck I haven't played, I just remember, I can win this, that guy on the internet said its 50/50 and I need these x cards to do it. Then hope for them in the opening 7, mull, and win!*

(Other's results may vary, I take no responsibility if you lose following this advice)

I've been testing Shaper Savant in this deck as a one of, and I really love how it interacts. Only once have I been able to go Venser, put that Wurmcoil back in your hand and then VC put that Wurmcoil under your library. But most of the time its just putting the threat back in their hand and hitting them hard.

I'm willing to try Boros charm next because I'd love to throw that down in order to save Giest.

well, one of two conjectures is true. either its modern season and people are buying staples to play for the season, or people are seriously picking up the format to straight up play it year round. i'm one of the latter, but i think the truth lies somewhere between the two. we'll see in a few weeks though, if staples fall in price after the season is over.

I think this is what everyone should be doing. (Playing the format year round especially since it has support in FNM) Out of the few places I frequent one is doing it on FNM with Standard and Draft running along side and the rest have their own days and get 15 players average out for Modern. So I can play Thursday, Friday, Saturday Modern every week with about 15 average.

Not the best support but its getting there. As for the prices, Nothing will change to crazy until MM comes out. It would have changed at the end of the season (this month I think) but MM changed that.

OK guys, here is how my weekend went. This post will have the matches, and I'll talk more about the list plus changes I'll be making in the next post.

On Saturday I played in the Atlanta PTQ @ Super Games.

    Round 1 - UW Control

This was a fun one. I won a quick game 1, got ran over in game 2, and was facing a grindy game 3 when time was called. Neither of us could win in 5 extra turns, which left both of us asking the other for concessions and ultimately a draw.

Funny story about this round... I boarded in Choke for game 2, drew Choke, and watched as it did precisely nothing for the entire game. My opponent's board of Celestial Colonnades and Seachrome Coasts made me look silly with my Choke in play. Awkward!

    Round 2 - BW Tokens

How do I win this match up? I have an idea that I'll share in the deckbuilding post, but lets just say that right now this match up looks terrible for me. I didn't draw Maelstrom Pulse, and Liliana was equally hilarious in game 1 versus an army of Spirit tokens backed with Tidehollow Scullers and discard spells.

So at this point I'm 0-1-1. This is the lowest possible record someone can have and still have a shot at top 8. I had to win EVERY single round in order to have a shot, and even then I needed decent tiebreakers in case something weird happens...

    Round 3 - Jund

This Jund player had the stock Jund list with Huntmasters in the 4-drop slot. Needless to say, all of those creatures that I run that dodge Lightning Bolt did their job perfectly, while a couple of Thoughtseizes took care of the other threats from my opponent's hands.

    Round 4 - Soul Sisters

Game 1 turn 1 my opponent drops a Martyr Of Sands. I'm having flashbacks to last season, when I played Martyr in a million different builds... So Martyr did its thing, giving me a free hand reveal, gaining 12 life, then dropping Serra's Ascendant. Too bad I had this sweet Devour Flesh to, ahem, go to lunch.

This match up felt really easy, especially so after I used my Golgari Charm in game 2 to wipe a board of Soul Warden and spirit tokens. The deck just plays a bunch of 1/1s when its not playing a few key cards, and I just had to drop my beefy creatures and force my opponent to eventually block.

    Round 5 - Infect

This match also felt easy. My opponent taking a mulligan to 5 in game 1 certainly helped, but I just had too much removal even when he kept a 7 in game 2 to get in the game. Liliana plus Devour Flesh plus a couple of discard spells is hard for a deck that must stick one of 12 creatures to deal with...

Round 6 - An old friend with BR Burn

Uh oh. This is my worst match up. How do I win this? Here's how:

    - Use Dark Confidant as a chump blocker. I read him as "1B: Counter target Goblin Guide."

    - Use Loxodon Smiter as a chump blocker. "Counter target Vexing Devil."

    - Attack with Aven Mindcensor while blocking on the ground.

    - Get lucky

I was at one life for a couple of turns at the end of game 1, so I got really lucky at that moment in the tournament. Game two was also close, but I had an opportunity to draw a Path to Exile while my opponent drew a Goblin Guide instead of actual burn spells to take me down from five.

I got to spend this round with an old college buddy that I haven't seen in a while, so that was cool. It was a nice reunion, especially since neither of us knew the other played Magic Smile

Round 7 - Korey McDuffie with Eggs

Korey is one of the PT regulars from the south east. He is an extremely good player who I believe has had some SCG and Grand Prix success as well. Regardless, he was sitting between me and the top 8, and after 4 wins in a row nothing was stopping me from getting win #5.

Game one was weird. I had a little bit of discard, but what really forced Korey's hand was my turn 3 play of double Deathrite Shaman. At that point, if the Shamans get to lose summoning sickness then I can use them at key points while he goes off to exile Second Sunrise in response to Conjurer's Bauble activations to mess with his loop. Korey tries to go off, chaining 4 Second Sunrise/Faith's Reward effects, but fails to go much further than 20 cards deep. I am able to untap with my Deathrites, drop some more pressure (a 4/5 Goyf with Korey at 10,) and he scooped.

Game 2 wasn't a game, and it felt bittersweet to win it. Basically, I had a draw with Choke, both of my Seals of Primordium, Lili, and discard spells. I snagged one of two Reshapes from Korey's hand, used Seal of Primordium on the Lotus cards when I got priority during the upkeep after they unsuspended, and ticked Lili up to ultimate. Then I had Choke. Korey fought well against my torrent of hate, using an Echoing Truth to bounce Choke and attempt to go off, but he failed with only a couple of cards available to him thanks to Lili and my tricky Seals.

And...wait, I'm in top 8? Really?!? Man, did it feel good to make top 8 again! The last time I made top 8 was years ago with Kithkin in some Standard format. This was a little bit of validation that I needed. Something to say all of that hard work is starting to pay off, especially after scrubbing out so many times in the last few years. I saved the celebrations for later, however, as I had a top 8 to play out!

Top 8 - my friend Stephen with UW Control

No matter who won this match, we'd be celebrating. Still, I really wanted to win this one, because my next opponent would have been UWR (good match up) and then the winner of the Bogles (rough) vs. another UWR match (Tony Chu.)

Sadly, things did not work out as hoped. Stephen had answers for all of my early plays, and then I proceeded to draw a billion lands in both games. Here's what the end of game 2 looked like:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    I also didn't draw a Choke.

I wished Stephen good luck in the semis, but sadly his run ended as well in the very next match against UWR. That UWR pilot ended up winning the whole thing. Still, we went to Chipotle (<3) to celebrate and crack that prize box, where I pulled the ONE card I wanted from the set: foil Godless Shrine. A great ending to an awesome day.

After the 4 hour drive home I made a couple of changes to help against the BW decks that I had trouble with, as well as recognizing the cards in the main deck that I wanted more of. I'll go more into specifics in the next post.

Vault of The Archangel was amazing all day for me, while Ghost Quarter didn't hit anything. GR Tron was non existent from what I saw, but "fair" decks where Vault would give me a huge advantage were everywhere! I actually ended up with more life than the Soul Sisters opponent in game 2, and they were supposed to be the "life gain" deck!

I was also a bit peeved by how many bad/awkward hands I was seeing due to colorless lands. With this change to 2 Vaults I cut both of the Ghost Quarters and put an Arid Mesa in the 3rd slot that opened. At this point I now had only 2 colorless lands instead of 3.

Also, Hero of Bladehold was the nuts, must kill or die on the spot threat that I wanted. I had one awkward game where I drew multiple Aven Mindcensors that did nothing instead of a Hero of Bladehold which would have changed that game. I decided after the top 8 ended to cut down to 2 Avens and go up to 3 Hero Of Bladehold.

    ------------------------------------

On Sunday I attempted to "run it back" in Asheville, NC.

Round 1 - another friend with BUG

Justin is a good friend of mine from when I used to play in Atlanta. He and his friend Andrew both made top 16 on Saturday with their BUG decks, which had the standard Jund/BG shell with awesome blue cards like Snapcaster Mage. We had two good games, but ultimately I lost to Justin's superior removal and the fact that I was never winning a Deathrite Shaman war when he had two Shamans and I only had one Smile

It doesn't hurt to lose to a friend, however. BTW, it was at this point that I first started to doubt Golgari Charm's effectiveness. I also may have sideboarded incorrectly in this match, keeping Thoughtseize in for game 2 when maybe they should have become something else.

    Round 2 - UW Control

This deck again! I wasn't worried about the deck since a) I drew my Choke this time, and b) I made a SB adjustment after Saturday to help with these types of matches. My new discard package with Duress (yeah, THAT card) helped me stick some threats and eventually a Choke. While my opponent could still play Magic with Choke out, he couldn't activate Celestial Colonnade, which gave me enough room to attack for the win with my team.

    Round 3 - Merfolk

This match started out poorly, with me mulliganing to 4. I swear my five card hand was mocking me: Thoughtseize, Thoughtseize, Dark Confidant, Forest, Vault. I sat there and played a creature while my opponent proceeded to play several Merfolk lords AND a Spreading Seas on the land I did get to lock up game 1.

No worries, I have EE for game 2, plus I am bound to have more game when I have more than 4 cards to work with. I end up keeping a hand with a bit of removal, a Deathrite Shaman, and a pair of Hero Of Bladehold. The Seal of Primordium for Aether Vial gets countered by Spell Pierce, and my Hero Of Bladehold gets bounced by Vapor Snag not once, but twice! Third time was the charm, and I thought that I could stabilize with a Hero that finally stuck vs. a growing Merfolk board. Nope... A vialed-in Phantasmal Image copied Hero, giving Merfolk the most explosive attack step I have seen all weekend. Sadly, that attack step was pointed at me Frown

I'm 1-2 at this point, and decide to keep playing because I need more PWP for GP Charlotte, and there's always the outside shots with these events. Not to mention that I just plain enjoy playing with this deck and playing this format!

    Round 4 - UWR

The games went as expected, aka in my favor. Electrolyze doesn't do much against 4/4s or 3/4s.

    Round 5 - Kiki Pod

This match up is supposed to be tough, but after my last changes it felt much easier. 4 Lilis plus my removal has made it so that I have a legitimate plan of keeping their board clear while I pick away with some of my large creatures. Drawing Aven Mindcensor also helped.

In game 2, I used Lili's +1 on one turn, saw my opponent discard a Qasali Pridemage, and then proceeded to play my Torpor Orb. How was he supposed to know?

    Round 6 - ThRUGtusk

That's what I'm calling the deck anyway. This was the UR Blood Moon control deck that I have seen online, except that it also played green for Thragtusk. The match up sounds hard, but was actually quite easy as my discard took care of the only threats in my opponent's land heavy keep in game 1, while I played Seal of Primordium in anticipation of the Moon in game 2. My opponent did end up having infinite Blood Moons, but it didn't matter because I had Loxodon Smiter and a large Tarmogoyf to attack with at that point.

    Round 7 - Affinity

In game one he gets me with Arcbound Ravager tricks and burn spells. Game 2 takes forever, mainly because we have a stalled board. His side is 2x Etched Champion, Blood Moon, and a pair of Ornithopters. I have a Goyf, a Bob, a Loxodon Smiter, Engineered Explosives set to 3, Aven Mindcensor, and multiple Deathrite Shamans. I am able to cast one spell per turn thanks to Deathrite Shaman and a basic Forest. I am also attacking for 2 each turn with Aven, which my opponent chooses not to chump with Ornithopters at any point. Eventually, my opponent draws a burn spell or draws something, because he swings and gets me to blow my EE. He goes to burn me with Galvanic Blast (I'm at 3) and I use the green ability on Deathrite in response to go to 1, paying with mana from my just freed Treetop Village. I was able to swing in on the next turn with man lands and all of my remaining creatures for the win.

In game 3, I had plenty of removal for the early threats, eventually racing with a Aven versus a 2/3 Signal Pest. I also have an active Bob, but time is called, and I need to find a way to win. On turn 2 of turns I play a second Bob after deliberating, deciding that its better to have a chance at winning and lose to burn if he has it rather than force a draw. On turn 4 or turns, Bobs take me to 4 from 11, when I flip a Loxodon Smiter and a Hero of Bladehold. Still, that is enough to tap out for an army that my opponent can't beat, but it can't attack until the next turn. My opponent also doesn't have the burn spell, but actually does not have a way to win at this point.

He doesn't scoop. I ask for the concession, showing him that I win on that next turn. He refuses. I try to explain that neither of us will get packs if we draw. He refuses. I offer to show him the next two Confidant flips to see if I die before I can attack. He doesn't care. I did look, BTW, and the next two flips were Engineered Explosives (0) and land.

This was frustrating because I really wanted to say "look, we can split the packs if one of us wins this match." I'd rather have both of us go home with six packs than 0, but of course I could not say anything remotely close to that due to a judge potentially giving me trouble for "bribery."

Maybe I'm just around spikes too often, but its implied with these concession situations that the person conceding is doing so to get a bit of prize split. Its an unofficial custom to just scoop to who ever has the best position or is going to win the game instead of screwing up both players' standings.

So I ended up 4-2-1 at the end of this one. At least I got to watch Justin (friend & first round opponent) make top 8. His friend Andrew, BTW, ended up winning the whole thing! These events are much better when you have friends to root for at the end of them.

There will be some more changes, but like I said in an earlier post, I'm happy with at least 70 of the 75 cards that I battled with this weekend. We're certainly on the right track, with my success and the success of others last weekend. We have a good deck here, and I'll go more in depth with the lists later.

Great write up! You still did really good for the weekend all in all! Are you willing to share your deck list? Or did i miss it somewhere?

So Harry Corvese also wrote an article on this deck:

    http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/tournament-report-the-ptq-triangle/

One thing that caught my eye was this comment:

This contradicts what Larry and Brandon have said in their commentary on the deck. They actually die more often to tarmogoyf than liliana. Liliana's best feature is she can kill Geist. Otherwise just +1ing her at the start doesn't do much as jund will be losing cards as well, the +1 is not a free roll for jund in the early turns. This deck has numerous ways to kill liliana without 2 for 1ing itself with colonnade, electrolyze and snapcaster. And even if they edict away your geist, electrolyze brings you back to card parity though you lost your best card.

He makes some changes to the deck, he added 2 restoration angels over a remand and a clique main (i'm assuming this, as his article/decklist is poorly written). He also liked batterskull and is thinking about cutting a dragon for it.

It would be nice for him to give solutions to beat pod and scapeshift instead of assuming they are out there.

I'm sure Pithing needle will catch on soon enough. I like he provided a list. Would love to know what he boarded in and out against Splinter Twin, Pod, and Affinity.

I just checked the newest winning standard decks..

Whole crap, they are expensive as ****.

Each one costs more than my current 2 standard decks + competitive modern deck combined.

I most recently build a bunt at the stake deck that went 3-3 in a GPT. If it takes an extra $1000 of investment to up that to a 5-1 then I want out of standard right now.

Build a $300 modern deck, good forever(?) vast majority of that being the mana base that is reusable.

Build a $700 standard deck, lose your investment in 3 months.

That last line could be a slogan for Modern and Legacy... Lol...

Thank you. I wasn't sure if anybody agreed with my opinions on Modern in general and the banned list specifically.

What I think a lot of people don't seem to understand in my responses is that they are coming from somebody who WANTS to love Modern.

I had all the cards for Legacy. The problem was, in my area, at least up until recently, Legacy just wasn't a viable option. And I more than had my share of arguments with the Legacy crowd on how difficult it was for many players to "attempt" to play Legacy, if not for the reality of it but for their perception of it. Perception is hard to change.

So when you have an almost zero Legacy population because the perception is ...

    1. Legacy is expensive
    2. Legacy is a turn 2 format
    3. Legacy is too hard to learn

You're not going to get a lot of uniformed people to play it. That's the reality, regardless of what Legacy actually is.

Because of this, when Modern was announced, I immediately jumped on the bandwagon and spent over $1,200 for cards including playsets of every dual, Goyf, Bob, and so on. I spared no expense, made a dozen decks with several more I was capable of making.

And then I read the banned list. And then I read it again. And again.

Each time saying to myself "WTF?"

Nacatl? Really? So now my zoo deck that I spent a considerable amount of money putting together was rubbish?

BBE? Really? So now my Jund deck takes a hit and now I have to decide if I either want to keep playing Jund, substituting something like Huntmaster or go off to Junk, RUG, BUG or whatever.

Seething Song? Really? I mean come on. My UR Storm deck had about a 50/50 matchup against Affinity and nothing from THAT deck was banned. Thank God, because I have an Affinity deck too. When Cranial goes, that's when I really pitch a fit.

Sorry but this ISN'T what I bought in for. I expected a fairly stable format like Standard and Legacy. This format is neither. In fact, it's the most unstable format we have. I honestly have no idea, 3 months from now, if the deck I put together today will STILL be playable in June.

So this format that I so wanted to love, sunk a ton of money into, and begged our LGS to hold a day for, is one that I now really couldn't care less about.

And if I feel that way, how many others feel the EXACT same way because of this ridiculously inconsistent banned list?

So NOW Valakut is OK? What changed?

And with control as weak as a kitten, AV is STILL too strong for Modern and Mox is going to suddenly turn this into a turn 3 format?

    Really?

I'm so disgusted that I don't even know where to begin.

And I probably put more money into this format specifically than anybody else here. So you can't tell me I'm a Legacy lover who is bashing Modern because I'm not.

I have ONE, maybe TWO players at our LGS who will still consider playing Modern. Why so few? It sure as hell ain't because of shocklands anymore now that they've been reprinted.

Could it be because they never know from one minute to the next what they're going to be able to play?

Again, I wanted to LOVE this format, but I don't DARE buy another card for it unless I am POSITIVE it is one I can play in Legacy.

WotC NEEDS to, no, MUST get their act together quickly or they are going to sink this format like the Titanic.

I was a Standard only player, (I hate even Sealed and Draft) but when all my play group went to GP Toronto, I went along to play all the side events. I caught the bug and made Jund, Tron, B/W Tokens, and just recently Uwr Giest. Before that I was the last hold out and gave the reasons that are occurring right now why I didn't want to join.
At the same time, I've been following the speculation price thread and each time a card shoots up, I've gone into my local LGS and bought that $20 card for $2 and then traded it to someone else at the new value. For that reason alone, I'm okay with Modern...

Otherwise yes, I feel your pain...
